A good "cleaning" oil simply means that it has a high detergent content. Any good reputable oil should have this... M1, Syntec, Penn. Plat., Royal Purple, ELF, Amsoil, etc. all of the so called "good" oils.

ELF is no doubt a good oil, and the fact that he runs noticeably cooler is impressive... not sure how he judged that for sure, our B5 varies by as much as 50 degrees depending on the driving condition. also, going from old to new oil no doubt gave the ELF a slight advantage. still, its impressive. My Father's B5.5 Passat 1.8T often reads as much as 3mpg better on the highway after an oil change... and he uses 5k intervals like alot other 1.8Ters do
From what i have been told, any name brand oil, changed at a safe interval, when used with a good filter, should keep your engine clean & wear to a minimum... as long as you pick a safe weight for your climate.
P.S. after doing some more reading, i think that i had Syntec on a bit of a pedestal... and i think "setay" summed it up well in his post... i dont believe it is as good as i originally had it pegged.... its not bad, but there definately is better out there.
