Excuse the state of the car - just picked it up from a metal fabricator (new aluminium undertray) when I went to pick up my box; a Thule dynamic 800, in titanium to match my wheels and wing mirrors.

I want this roof box so bad but it's not available in the U.S. I've tried to find someone overseas to ship but nobody does.

It's by far the best looking roof box on the market. Car looks great!

This is a tease for all the fellow box nerds out there...

Some shots of the 2017 Thule Motion XT. Size is XL. This box is all-new and has a rad sliding lock that pops the lid up, and has audible clicks to ensure proper closure. It will be coming in gloss black and titan gray, with a very limited "launch edition" matte black with lichen green interior being sold in select locations.

These will be on the market in February - you saw it here first :)

And yes that is a 3D printed one on a pinewood derby car haha!

No, it does not go back. Venting is a yes. Only reason to open your sunroof with a box is to clean it. haha.

As promised, here are some mediocre photos of my new Thule Force 625 XL (17cu.ft) roof box on standard square thule load bars. It really is a perfect fit in my eyes despite Thule's fit guide suggesting a size Large. It is fairly wide (34.5") which I was looking for to maximize utility and it is long enough (84") to fit 198cm skis and not hit my hatch, yet won't hang out over my windshield too far. The fore and aft adjustability of the clamps is fairly long (which is ideal or reducing vibration). The surface is embossed with small diamond shapes which I'm assuming is to reduce wind noise and maybe drag. It is not as flimsy as my former Thule Vision which was nice to see.

All and all, it's incredibly well made and a perfect fit for the B7 Avant.

Thanks for posting this! I just picked up a B7 avant, same color as yours and was wondering how the Force XL would look on mine. This looks good! Do you have it as far back as it will go without the hatch touching the box when opened?

I have owned the Inno Shadow 15 previously - awesome box...probably my fav. After owning the more expensive Thule Boxter 611 (now Hyper XL) before that, and not liking how large it was on a B7 avant, the Inno was perfect...low profile, sleek, hunkered down. At the end of the day, if you want a low profile box that is not hanging off both ends of your roofline and is not overtaking the profile of your car, the shadow 15 or 16 is your box. Really depends on what you're carrying - for skis, its definitely the play. Plus its different - you see more now that they're gaining popularity for their low profile design, but when I had my shadow, you would never see another one like it.






I am curious about the newer Inno Wedge 660 - anyone have that mounted on a B8 allroad? Would love to see the profile...appears to be more streamlined and beefy than the shadow line.

Thule Sonic Alpine on Thule AeroBlade Edge bars in black.. it rides quieter and moves less on these bars than it did on Whisper Bars.. I credit that to a slightly higher ride height off the roof.

No problem! Glad it helped someone!

Yes I have it set forward so that there is the tiniest gap between the hatch and the box. Also, the bars are not necessarily aligned with the factory points on the rail. Set them up so that they are as wide as possible. You'll notice that my front bar is right over the sunroof. I don't use the sunroof in the winter, so it was no issue for me and it would still be able to open fully anyway, just not tilt up.

Also, I have whispbars now so that the box sits lower. Those are pretty much in the same location has the square Thule bars that are shown in the pic above.

Also, I put shims about the thickness of a paint stirrer between the box and the top of the whispbars so that the clamps don't rub on the sunroof glass. The rear clamps don't rub on the roof.

yes, normally i'm suspicious of rack with sacks, but this combo i can recommend!

really, though, i wanted the flexibility of a basket with the waterproofing of a box. the IP-rated Interstate fits nicely in the basket and straps in safely. no way i'm going to let the bag sit direcly on the roof, either. i couldn't get enough sealant on there to make me feel comfortable with that!

I was at rackattack looking at the inno offerings. Wedge is an interesting design, and has more capacity than the shadow, but if you look at them side by side, the profile and design of the shadow is so much more appealing to the eye. The wedge 660 is probably the closest to the shadow of all the wedges...

Been creeping this thread for awhile....so much great info and (wallet denting) inspiration. I've finally got my box & rail setup done, figured I'd share too: Inno Shadow 15 with Whispbars on an '08 Titanium Ibis White A4 Avant 3.2.

All set for winter ski season! I really like how flush it sits on the roof while still being able to open the sunroof. Apologies for the poor lighting...need to get some outdoor shots.

Pretty sure it's a sticker. Sides and back. Plan on taking mine off next deep detail.

They're stickers so they peel right off. I removed them 5 minutes after unboxing. Might be a little residue, especially if they've been on for awhile.
