    Battery died.....fuel gauge shows empty

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my battery died yesterday. I got my friend to give me a jump and everything worked fine. I had to reset a few things such as the clock and power windows. But I was wondering if anyone else had the problem of the fuel gauge showing empty after the battery died. I know my tank couldn't be empty because I just recently filled up the car to a full tank!! Does anyone know if there is a way to reset this or get it back to normal?

From what I've read this is a common problem when the battery dies. It should go back to normal in a few days.

Yes, completely normal. Happened to me a while ago, showed empty, went to gas station and pumped like 2 gallons before the pump clicked off... wtf, kept pumping until it almost started to leak out, and then realized that maybe it was full... drove around for a couple of days and it slowly returned to normal...

If you are under warranty. I would get to the dealer asap. As they told me, its a one piece cluster. So they didn't tell me wait a week it will fix itself, they just changed the entire cluster. Awesome for the center display, which usually gets bad the pixels and shit after a while. I got a brand new one! lol

Warranty expired 3 months ago. I called the dealer today and he said it could be the cluster. But then I reffered him to the owners manual where it said the clock , windows, and the engine management system resets after a battery dies. He then told me to just drive it for a week and everything will get back to normal. The weird thing is, no where in the manual does it say that!!!

Yep happened to me as well. Woke up and the battery was dead, jumped it and the gauge showed empty. came on here and made a thread about it (wonder if you searched at all...) and I got the same responses. However I just bought a new battery and it worked fine.

Happened to me once, but I rather know how much fuel I have, so if you have VAG-com handy, play with instruments and "reset" it, worked for me.

Re: Battery died.....fuel gauge shows empty

Same happened to me on Monday. It read empty till I topped up the tank. Then read half full, then slowly crept up to totally full over the next 10 minutes driving time.

Weird, but it was a total relief!

this has happened to me also. Very common, just pull the fuse for the guage cluster while the ignition is off, then plug back in and away you go. Nothing else is wrong , i promise.

Re: Battery died.....fuel gauge shows empty

This just happened to me this morning. I went to start my car and it was dead. I jumped it and the fuel gauge didn't read. Now, I just changed my battery 2 months ago to something from Advanced Auto so any other suggestions on what could be wrong? Crappy battery?

This happened to me, but it was due to a dead "Cell" in my battery. Bought an Optima Red top and all is well.

This happened to me when I left the headlights on when I was fiddling with aiming the headlights and my battery died. I charged it up, and when I went to start it, the fuel guage reads empty. I also got the fuel warning chime and fuel pump indicator on my dash . I left it for a few days but it didn't reset back to normal. So I disconnectd the battery for a couple of minutes and it's back to normal operation. Electronic systems, gotta luv it...NOT!!! Easy fix though.
