    Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP (UPDATE)!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So first off I want to make sure I have the right layout of the cylinders:

    Back

    3 6
    2 5
    1 4

    Front

Next, I just changed spark plugs less than 1K ago and just just replaced cylinder 5s coilpack and it still didn't fix it. Is there something I'm missing?

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

let the list of causes begin... coolant temp sensor, other coilpack(s), ignition control modules, boost/vacuum leak lol. the list could go on forever. have you pressure tested? if you tire everything out do a compression test to see if its holding pressure.

edit. is it misfiring at idle? or while you drive it begins to get bad ?

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

So I ran the scanner from autozone and it picked up on cylinder 5 misfire. It has been consistant for the last couple of days on the same cylinder. It went away yesterday and was driving around all day today and randomly came back with the flashing CEL. Scanned again and came up with the same results. It is misfiring all the time and it smells like gas, so I would assume it's not even firing.

Here's my thread, I don't know if you do have the same problem, but this is what happened when my Cylinder #5 was misfiring.

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193332

to follow up, I ended up trading the car in for something else, my car was just giving me too much problems. I'll post pics of the new ride later.

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

Well I sure hope that isn't the issue.

The problem has been intermittent. My car shudderd for about 2 min yesterday and then went right back to being normal. I cleared the code and all was fine. A was able to get on it without any problems. Then start up the car and head down the road a mile and it kicks in again and hasn't gone away yet. I'm thinking of swapping the coil packs and see if I get another code.

Anybody have any other ideas. I'm trying to get this figured out ASAP cause I can't get to work without my car.

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

So I just swapped out CP and Plug from cylinder 5 to 6 and have the same problem but now I have my red coolant light blinking at me. Not sure if it is from me moving it around to swap out plugs or what. Any insight to this?

Any other codes? Have you cleared the codes and seen how long it takes to come back?

Could be a plethora of things ... needs some good scans or logs to tell.

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

Yeah I couldn't get a code to come up again. I'm afraid to drive it around too much especailly now that the coolant light is blinking and moving. I'll see if I can get something to come up. So far it's only been a misfire in cylinder 5. It idles rough and gets worse the faster I go.

So what the hell could this be? Could it be the plug that plugs into the CP or something different all together and why the hell is my coolant light on now?

    So I just found this:

I'm guessing this could be why my coolant sensor is saying my engine is too hot? Anybody know what this is called?

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

How did the plug look when you pulled it out? Did you replace it? You are clearly not firing on cyl 5 for whatever reason. You checked the CP, have you tried replacing or swapping the ignition control modules? CP to plug connector (the CP seat)?
You probably drained out all your coolant, which is why your coolant light is on. Fix the broken t connector and re-fill with G12 coolant.

awww, thanks for the reply. The plug seemed to be ok but I'm not too familiar with this stuff. It was looking black at the tips and a little on the threads. I had just swapped them out less that 1k ago due to other misfires above 3 to 4K RPMs, it fixed that problem.

I just bought a new CP from the dealership thinking it would fix it but it didn't. Like I said before I swapped plug, and CP with cylinder 6 but still not firing on 5. I will try and swap the ignition controls and see what I come up with. I'm not sure how to check the seat?

You just replace it, it's cheap.

If the plug was black then you should replace it.

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

Would that mean I'm also running rich? My exhaust it pretty new and inside the tips are pretty black already.

Now I think we might be getting somewhere! I just switched the ignition wires and the misfire moved over to cylinder 2. Does this just mean I need a new ignition module and if so which one?

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP!

    So it's all fixed!!!

For anyone who cares, it ended up being a bad lower ignition control module. Got the new part and it fixed the misfires. Now, the coolant warning ended up being the plug on the bottom of the reservoir. The wires were cut! So I stripped them and reconnected and it's running great. Thanks for all the advise!

    Re: Cylinder 5 Misfire...HELP (UPDATE)!

Mine was intermittent as well at first but then eventually never went away.

There are 2 ignition control modules on the top of you airbox. From what I was able to dig up, the top one controls cylinders 1-3 and the bottom one controls 4-6. Once I swapped the cables the misfire jumped over to cylinder 2.

I ended up getting the part from the dealer because I couldn't wait for it, which of course was expensive ($263 without tax). I saw some on genuine audi parts at $173 and on ECS for between $180 and $230. I would definitely order it if you can but make sure thats it before you buy. I ended up buying a coilpack from the dealer I didn't need.
