Was looking around for some upgrades to do on my shift knob. Dont really like the feel and the leather is feeling worn. Has anyone changed their tip knob to lets say maybe this ?

    Re: Tip Shift knob upgrade

Yeah, That knob i posted is from an S6 .. wonder if that would fit ? That would be great if it did, looks a little more classy more brushed aluminum on the knob.

Does anyone know if the shift knob from the S-Line is preferated like the steering wheel.. that would be the best solution for me.

from this link it seems like we have to buy this piece in order to put a different shift knob on our automatic trannies. it says that you 'pull up' instead of push the button to shift, i don't think i can get used to that... doesn't anyone carry a nicer looking knob for auto that works like the original one?

IMO, the automatic gearbox on the a4 is the ugliest area inside the car, as well as ugly compared to most other automatic gearboxes. i just want a nicer shiftknob to try to compensate...

    Re: Tip Shift knob upgrade

After going back and forth with VAGparts i was able to find out some good info. They need a VIN number from one of the cars above that have the S-line preforatted knob for a TIP. Once they get that number they can look it up and make the part available to everyone.

I also recieved a great DIY , hopefully someone can make this a sticky..

Removing and installing selector lever handle
    Removing

    – Shift selector lever to position “D”.

    – Turn sleeve -1- anti-clockwise and push down onto stop.

    – Pull button -2- out of selector lever handle ¬3-carefully, just far enough to be able to insert a cable tie between button and selector lever.

    Note
Under no circumstances pull button out further, as selector lever handle would then become damaged.
Use the cable tie to secure the button in its pulled position -arrow-, as shown in the illustration.
Remove the selector lever handle by pulling it off to the top.

    Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:
    – Shift selector lever to position “D”.

    Note
To install the selector lever handle -3- the button -2- has to be pulled out to the stop and must be secured with either a cable tie -arrow- or with the assembly aid supplied together with the new handle.
If, by mistake, the button has not been secured, it must not be pulled out of the selector lever handle using mechanical tools. Position a compressed air gun at the bottom of the handle and carefully press the button out with compressed air.
Fit selector lever handle -3- fully onto selector lever; button -2- points towards the driver. The handle must engage in annular groove of selector lever.
Remove the cable tie -arrow-or assembly aid; the button mechanism will then engage in the vertical groove on the selector lever. If necessary, press the button into the selector lever handle.
Pull sleeve -1-upwards and engage by turning in clockwise direction

hope this helps anyone else who is looking to do an upgrade... maybe that S6 knob will work now

cfujikawa : maybe u can pm me ur VIN or if u see a part num on the knob that would help out too.. thanks

So that SPP Tip Mod, does that come with one of those shifters, or is that some mod that just allows you to use a shifter with the special saftey button? Anyone have pics of a non audi shifter on a Tip?

    Re: Tip Shift knob upgrade

Masteroc, i found a link the other day that showed how to upgrade to just about any manual knob from a tip... trying to find that now thought i book marked it but i guess i didn't , once i find it i will post it .. but yes you can upgrade to any type of manual shifter with the SPP tip mod.

I also finally got the part number to the SLINE perforated shift knob. 8E1 713 141AGQPY @ 63.15 GBP from VAG parts about 125 USD.. kind of expensive but will look and feel nice so I ordered it and going to try to install it soon.

Also , the S6 gear knob doesn't look like it will fit according to VAGparts, they say the way it snaps in is different.. owell worth a shot.

Also thinking of adding a leather boot around the knob and have it tuck in under the Auto gear box so you can still see the PRNDS,i don't like the little ridged rubber i seem to always get shit stuck in there lol.. does anyone know how to take apart the gear box to get under the trim and remove the aluminum piece ? Has anyone tried this yet ?

I dont know if the leather boot will work around the gear box area. Since the ridges on our gearboxes are small and shaped in a wierd form.

Hey all, I'm looking at making a brushed aluminum shifter knob for my Q5 also ... I can take mine off to measure but since I'm making this from scratch I'll need to know about how to disasemble the shifter knob to re-use or make the parts needed for the new one ... anyone have an idea where I can see how to take it apart?

My thoughts are a nice brused alluminum with S-Line accross the top (my q5 is an s-line). If I can figure this out, I can make others for other cars ...

    Re: Tip Shift knob upgrade

The S6 shifter knob does fit, you just need to do a little modding.

    1. To make it fit I took out the tabs around the plastic piece below the knob.
    2. Break off the black tabs on the lower part of the S6 shifter.
    3. I put foam around the base of the metal the shifter attached too. I did this so that the plastic cover didn't move or rattle.

I'm really please with how it turned out.

from what i can remember, separate the bottom ring from the knob, pull the shift button outwards, but not completely and make sure you place a zip tie between the button and the knob. once you have that pull the shift knob UP.

turn the "ring" labeled #1 counter clockwise. then push the ring down until it stops.
pull shift button (#2) out just enough to get a zip tie in. pull entire handle (#3) UP.

you'll get used to it. you literally only pull up when shifting from P-->D, R, or back into P, so it really has no impact on you when you're actually driving....it's not like you have to pull up when you're using the knob to do tip shifts or anything

I would really like a leather boot. My merc wagon has a beautiful shift boot and its and auto. I love how you move to the right pull back then left then down. Make putting the car into drive much more satisfying. I have always hated the gearbox on my a4. Looks so cheap.

Can anyone tell me the part number, going to audi dealer tomorrow, have to have the number. Thanks in advance. :)
