So I made an intake and heatshield

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Pics....

It's the prototype I guess you could say. LOL. I have some gaps I need to fix on the next one. Those are shown in this handy dandy MS Paint picture.

Blue Circle - I need to extend the shield to the firewall
Yellow Circle - I need to re shape this hole for the intake duct
Red Circle - I need to extend this radius so it follows the edge of the engine bay better.

The inside will be lined with reflective insulating blanket material as well as the turbo side of the shield. There is a crease just below the intake duct that runs from front to back and I'll stop the insulation there. The top will always be raw metal. Room for stickers, or powercoat this beast or whatever. It needs work, but without a first try how can I make a perfect fitting one? The shield itself is made of 26 gauge galvanized steel and weighs about 3-5 pounds (estimating high, probably REALLY high.) The side by the turbo extends all the way down to the subframe rail.

Make the final out of aluminum, it will absorb and disipate heat much faster!

I agree with the aluminum part. How did you cut and shape the heat shield?

Re: So I made an intake and heatshield

Definately with the test fit, cut, test fit, cut.... It took about an hour for this first one. I do have a home grown cone filter under there. I knew this one wouldn't fit exact so I didn't waste my insulation on this one. I will be redoing it shortly. I need to look around for some aluminum, as the hardware store didn't have anything but this. Aluminum will be much easier to bend and shape, let alone cut.

I would love to make a couple of these once I get it to fit nice and install very easy to sell on here. I'm not looking to make a fortune or anything, just maybe 20 bucks for my efforts.

    Cost of Materials

    24"x24" Gal. Steel - $12.00
Strip of Alum for side bracket - $4.00
    3/4" Self Tapping Screws - $1.25
    Rubber Safety strip - $Freebie
    Insulation 10'x1' roll - $20.00

    Total - $37.25

I'd like to sell them for $60 Shipped to anywhere.

Re: So I made an intake and heatshield

The intake I made was quite simple and prolly not the most efficient thing in the world but oh well.

    Materials
    1 - AEM DryFlow Filter - $48.00
1 - 3" to 2" Rubber reducing coupler (to connect filter to PVC) - $9.00
    2 - 2" 90 degree street bends (PVC) - $3.00
1 - 3" long by 2" PVC pipe to connect PVC bend to coupler - $Freebie
1 - 2" Rubber coupler (to connect pvc to MAF, Yes I didn have to stretch the rubber alil to fit over MAF) - $6.00

    Total - $66

Total for intake and shield - $103.25

I think that other guy is selling his shields for around 90 bucks? He has to be making 50 bucks at least on each one. To that I say, nice marketing...very nice.

Yeah I know, I just got a bur up my ass and decided to waste some money and kill some time. The DryFlow (Synthetic element, serviceless) was the best quality filter I could find in the area that had a 3" boot.

Re: So I made an intake and heatshield

Aluminum is easier to bend and shape, But its also prone to cracking easier. I am a Sheet Metal worker for the Aerospace industry. I work with sheet Aluminum everyday, trust me when I say this, sand all edges good before bending, or more than likely it will crack.
If you can, get some 2024-T3. If its 7075 T-6 dont even bother trying to bend it, It will CRACK.

I think that's the opposite of what the point of the heat-shield is. Increased dissipation will help transfer heat to the cold-side of the heat shield faster. You want a material that blocks/withstands heat the most, like an insulator.

My next one will still be made out of gal. steel with the reflective insulation laid out as I already said. I want this to be inexpensive if others decide to construct their own or buy one from me so ceramic coating is out. I'll let you all know how the next trial goes.

but you don't want it to heat soak - and it is going to heat up some. so your best bet is to make it from aluminum so that the heat it DOES take on will disipate quicker, and as along as it's insulated well on the other side - it shouldn't ever get that hot.

personally i think a ceramic coated heatshield would be the best anyways...

im planning on getting my TP/DP coated, as well as my manifold and the hotside of my turbo.

Re: So I made an intake and heatshield

Heat soak implies that the metal is going to absorb thermal energy - that isn't a problem though. If you have a good enough insulator between the shield and the air inside the cubby where the filter is drawing from, it doesn't matter how how the shield gets (or how much heat it takes to get it that hot, or how long it takes to cool).
