Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well my power steering rack in my car is completely shot. The other day I slided the drivers side boot out the way and fluid just came pouring out, lol.

Anyways, searching the forum has yieded that the website www.carsteering.com is a good place to get rebuilt racks. Anybody ever use them?

Has anyone DIY the power steering rack?

Also, is there any alternative fluids I can use (one with a thicker viscosity) that i can temporarily use on my shot rack?

Thanks in advance! Any advice or info is appreciated!

If the rack is shot, just put whatever you can find in there. It's not gonna get much worse!

Oh wait, the pump is still fine though I bet... ixnay that suggestion. Where's Old Guy or Diagnosticator, this is a perfect question for them.

You can run Havoline Power Steering fluid. Look for the one with the the Volkswagen TL-VW-570-26 approval on the bottle.

Absolutegtr: Please check the cap on your fluid reservoir. I'm pretty sure on the '02 it will say "use mineral fluid only"

First off, I already had a whole LITRE of that Pentosin can posted above, but my car already went through the whole thing, lol. It leaks that bad.

And you are right. I noticed that a few days ago and, the cap does read "MINERAL HYDRAULIC FLUID ONLY"

At walmart I found some power steering fluid that "Contains Mineral Oil"

Will that work? I am just worried about my power steering pump!

I would look for the Volkswagen TL-VW-570-26 approval and not just use any mineral based fluid. As I posted above Havoline has one that meets it and should be available pretty much anywhere.

Re: Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

Can someone tell me what steering rack is the correct fit for my car?

    My car is a:

    2002 Audi A4 1.8t quattro 5spd manual

The eighth digit in my VIN # is : E

    http://carsteering.com/partsdisplay/2002_Audi/A4.html

Also, does someone know if POSSIBLY the steering rack from a B7 (with speed sensetive steering) can be "retrofitted"?

    THANKS!

Re: Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

there was a guy back on aw that replaced his rack and it required a lot of labor, like 12 hours or more if i remember but that was on a B5 I would hope that in your case it is easier. still the best thing to do is to check your rack in the car for brand and with or w/o strut.

also doing that will allow you to get an idea of what you'll be up against. remember that the tierod ends have to come off, they dont like coming off. so that will prolly make or break your desicion to do it your self.

also you may be able to by the part and take it somewhere to have it done.

Re: Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

i have been using M1 ATF as my PS fluid in multiple Audis with no problems. M1 has better viscosity than pentosin and resists shearing. also i've been told M1 can stop minor leaks.

    Interesting...

    Is M1 the brand?

Where can you buy it from? I have never heard of it.

Oh and durfA4, I have already done the timing belt, clutch and many other PITA shit on my car, lol....i little steering rack dont scare me

Honestly (this of course sounds easier than it is) but it is just the tie rod ends, two or three bolts, Steering column bolt, and then the two hose and then you just need to feed it out. Lol....

Re: Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

i tried to do my tie rod ends on my 2001, and wound having to take it to some one with a torch, they are not easy after 6 years of winters, so i would at least plan on replacing those. I have also done many clutches 2 a4s, miata, 3 DSMs, 2 jeeps, engine swap in one of those jeeps, countless turbo upgrades and such, so like i said it may turn out to be a bigger problem then you think.

I am all for you doing it but just letting you know that this is not a clutch.

but then it may be easy.

Re: Does anyone know if there is an alternative power steering fluid I can use?

As mentioned, you can use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. But if the rack still leaks into the boots, then it's time for a new rack. Someone here wrote a write-up and it didn't seem too bad labor wise. The replacement can be expensive though. Sounds like you need a new one. Try gently playing the steering wheel back and forth when at idle, at rest. If you have and hear play then there is not much to do than install a new one.

Yes. Thanks!! That is exactly what i was asking in my previous thread:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=190582

At idle, I f I move the steering wheel back and forth, all I hear is tick...tick...tick.

Also when I jacked up the front and grabbed the front wheel, at the 3 and 9 -o-clock positions, there was quite alot of play!

That definetly means I need steering rack, huh?

So then with the link I posted a few posts above, what type of steering rack is the one for me?>

I bought a rack (same year), installed. Now it connection to the rack is almost 1 inch over to driverside, hitting the clutch pedal.
