    Cable or drive by wire?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Are our cars cable throttle or electronic? I have noticed that sometimes if I am in first with the clutch in, I blip the throttle a bit to get going, then sometimes if I have to clutch in quickly again, when I attempt to blip the throttle again there is no response, and the throttle seems to have gotten very confused.

    Anyone else experience this?

I figured. Thats why I suppose it gets confused if I make quick throttle movements. Often times Ill tap it then tap it again and nothing is happening. Other times its superb response.

Definitely drive by wire. I don't think Audi has made a cable operated throttle since sometimes in the mid/early 90s

Yeah the (electronic) throttle is not very sensitive to rev-matching techniques. Just step down on the throttle more or blip it twice- that's how I've been doing it for the last 2 years.

But just think of it this way, BMW's electronic throttle is even less sensitive to "blipping". You literally have to mash the pedal to the floor for about a second to get proper response.

What about our steering? My hunch is its conventional because when you pull out that servotronic relay it gets really really heavy. Am i wrong?

Clutch isn't the same as throttle. IIRC B5 wasn't DBW until the 99.5 refresh.

Is there a production steering-by-wire i.e. non-concept car by anybody at all?

Pretty sure the new BMWs have electronically controlled steering. Also I imagine those new Lexus LS cars that park themselves have to be electronic as well.

Re: Cable or drive by wire?

Did some research and looks like nobody has 100% steering-by-wire. So they all maintain the mechanical linkage but the electronic system can intervene when necessary - i.e. ESP, automatic parking.

So I guess my question is, do our cars have any ability to do anything like that?

It's been raining very often here recently. And I always drive with ESP OFF in the rain, the traction control system and I don't get along very well in low traction environments. The car wants to shift weight around and understeer while the steering input I give says experience and skill tells me this line and that speed is more than fine.

I've noticed that with the ESP off the steering becomes heavier (at all speeds) and becomes a lot more sensitive to input. Basically I have control now, car doesn't tell me what to do. Haven't pushed the car hard enough in the rain yet to test if ESP comes back on (probably never will). But I've read some threads in the past with regards with ways to turn ESP off completely because it does supposedly kick back in to prevent you from trying to do AWD donuts

I've done AWD donuts and ESP doesn't come on, but you will burn up your tires and oil pretty quickly. I was runnin her pretty hard.

I've noticed this same thing in this car, minor annoyance and as another poster said, no where near as bad as BMW's DBW. I like the fact that when I'm in 1st in heavy traffic I can precisely control the throttle so as not to stall the car, it's very sensitive to input in that situation.

Re: Cable or drive by wire?

Our ESP is GREAT in the A4. If you're in a foot of snow with it on, instead of it just applying ABS hardcore to almost make you stall , it transfers power and makes the best out of the situation. Sliding around is hard, but that's how it should be. I'm very impressed at how safe it feels with ESP on.

With ESP off, I think the steering feels really good. It's a little understeer biased, but I'd rather have that than oversteer. Learn your car better and you won't sit there and burn up tires, the torsen system is awesomeeee

Re: Cable or drive by wire?

I've never driven in snow before but I'm assuming that quattro was designed with that more in mind. Personally I feel very uncomfortable with the way quattro transfers weight and "power cutting" at corner apexes sometimes. But in rainy conditions I now drive with ESP off, and the car's behavior is very predictable (for me at least).

I don't think those can be considered steering-by-wire. If you use the same definition that's used for DBW & fly-by-wire in the aviation industry, SBW would mean there isn't a mechnical linkage between the steering wheel & the wheels.
