    034 snub mount troubles

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
im havin troubles with my snub mount. i installed it, and then drove the car and there was quite a bit of vibration, then a LOT of vibration, like i didn't want to drive the car above 20mph. i got back under the car and saw the mount was cocked sideways. guess it didn't seat properly. so i started examining the mount and the spindle and it looks like there is a thinner section on the spindle that i guess seats into this lip in the 034 mount, but i cant get the mount all the way onto the spindle and trust me i've tried everything. so i broke out the dremel and started grinding away at the lip inside the mount, applied some synthetic grease and it still wont go on. i've tried the trick where your supposed to tighten the bumper supports with the mount and spindle lined up but even with the supports fully tightened it still doesn't go all the way in. i didn't want to grind the entire lip off cause i thought that would cause the mount to not seat right either but im about to just do that unless ya'll have any better solutions.

here's some pics of the mount with the bumper supports fully tightened. sry for crappy quality, cellphone pics. oh and its an AEB engine btw

    Re: 034 snub mount troubles

From what I was told, it's normal that it vibrates. Mine did really badly, but after a week or so, I guess it broke in and is normal now. As for sitting cocked, idk what to say about that.

Wood block and a rubber mallet? Maybe toss the mount in a 200 degree over for a few minutes to soften it up first.

yeah i expected the vibration at idle, but when i stepped on it there was a violent shaking so i turned around, parked, and saw the mount cocked sideways

there's no room to get at it with a mallet, tried that. but that oven idea is interesting

and the mount IS supposed to go over that thinner section right?

I used a torch to melt the inside a little bit and then hammered it in. I had no vibrations, running sweet, what a big difference over that stock pos mount.

i had to put mine in a press with some lubricant to get it on. not to mention that 034 sent me the wrong bracket the first time (which you dont notice until dissasembled) and i had to take a hack saw to the second one to get it to fit. yeah ... not a big fan of this mod and the 6 hours of my life it ate up. lol, anyone want that first bracket? brand new.

maybe, i dunno, i also just replaced all the motor mount and tranny mounts and saw that the bracket connecting my tranny mount was cracked in 3 spots so that could have also been the culprit of the violent shaking. i replaced that bracket this morning and thats when i noticed the snub mount cocked sideways as well. guess i'll just take it off the jackstands and go for a drive and see whats up then report back

yes, the AEB one. turns out 034 doesnt make a snub mount bracket for the 2.8 even though they say they do ... at least 99.5 2.8.

I will sell the AEB one for 60 shipped.

don't remember in all honesty. they were great on everything else ... no complaints. but the snub bracket just turned out to be an absolute b!tch. one of the easiest things turned out to be the most difficult thing yet on my car ... including the blower.

If you have a V6 then use the S4 bracket. You NEED the bracket that comes with the snub mount.

    Re: 034 snub mount troubles

See the bracket secures the snub mount. Its almost a snug fit so there is pretty much 0 slop.Usually people that but just the snub mount are the inline-5 guys that make there own cross bar for the intercooler.

    Re: 034 snub mount troubles

toss the snub in the microwave for 30-60 seconds to warm it up and hit it on with a mallet. works like a charm.

be prepared to feel a large difference in the entire car. much more of a responsive feel. at times i wish i had my stock one back in because you can feel the diff quite noticably.

    Re: 034 snub mount troubles

to get mine into the bracket i took a knife to the very edge and took a very little off the corner of the mount. i put the mount in position like you did, put the front end back on and then got on all fours, crab soccer style. Then i double kicked the thing into place. two legs at a time, three or four hits, it went in :D

without the bracket there is a whole lot of space for the engine to bounce around, in all directions.

you could take your rad support all the way off, then hit it with a 3lb sledge hammer and a block of wood with a ton of grease inside of it. thats how I got my APR one on.

    Re: 034 snub mount troubles

Just switch snub mounts to one designed for the Audi's like our Stern mount.
034 is using an old Prothane mount designed for the MkI VW Rabbits. They make a shroud around it because those mounts are actually smaller in diameter than they should be and don't fit very well. However, based on your photograph, the mount isn't pushed on all the way.

Our Stern mount is larger in diameter than the stock mount and actually designed for the Audi B5's. No shrouds or housings to worry about because they fit!

Here's a photo of their mount to show it's a MkI Rabbit mount.
