really dumb question about screws for license plate

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The screws that came with the car for the rear plates are too long and everytime I shut the trunk, the license plate and the frame rattle. I've tired like 10 different size screws and even went to Home Depot and couldn't find anything. Even the front plate is not 100% secured. Is there like a special size screw?

Re: really dumb question about screws for license plate

    What I did was........

I got some small metal washers from Home Depot. They come in packs of 10 or 20.

    For the rear plate:

I put two washers together with some Elmer's glue.... placed it behind the plate and put the screw in. I did this for each of the four screws.

I tightened them all. NO RATTLE.

I did the same fo the front plate. Since I could only do the top two screws up front.... to compensate for the loose 'bottom' of the plate. I used industrial strength VELCRO.

Front plate is very snug..... NO RATTLE.

BTW..... I do not have license plate frames.

Re: really dumb question about screws for license plate

On my cars, I use 10mm long stainless-steel allen-head cap screws with a washer under them (purchased from the local Ace hardware store) and they snug down nicely, with no rattling whatsoever. IMO, they look nice and they're effectively theft-proof, too, as I doubt too many thieves carry hex-head sockets around with them...

i went and bought the plastic screws and cut em down to length unfortunately thay are harder to remove than any metal screw. but it allowed for the correct length. you can also go to the dealer and get a set for free if you smile.

FYI, the required screws are a standard metric thread, available at any decent hardware or auto parts store, and are not unique in any to "that stupid piece of plastic."

Hex is a great idea. I think I am going to have to try the same thing.

do you use the net in the trunk? if not, take the net holder off, there are 4 holders totally and it will give you 8 screws. those screws will fit into the holes perfectly! I use that.

Re: really dumb question about screws for license plate

I just went to Autozone and bought a slightly tinted license frame. It came with bolts that fir perfect. And then to make it look nice i bough bolt caps to put over the screws. The bold caps just snapped right over them and looks great to me. The pic i have isnt the best.

Re: really dumb question about screws for license plate

I used some .50/pkg PLastic license plate screws from the hardware store, they were
6mm x (too fucking long)mm, so I cut them to just the right length with a pair of dykes.

Worked like a charm & they wont rust, rattle, or wiggle loose since they're plastic.
