brand new turbo has small shaft play?

folks, does the brand new turbocharger supposed to have small shaft play (i'd say within a mm)? I just got the (brand new) replacement K04 from Kinetic and it has a small shaft play, called them up, spoke with Sean (nice guy, sounded knowledgable), he say it is perfectly normal and it will pretty much go away once the turbocharger is compressed with oil.
not that i don't beleive the guy, i do, but i'm still worried, why is my k03 with 60+K on it has no shaft play at all?

Yea, hes right.....there is no oil in the "galleries" so it is perectly normal for their to be MINIMAL shaft play

You will have some side-to-side play no matter what, more if there isnt any oil in the journals. The play you dont want is axial (front-to-back play)

i actualy talked to Borg Warner support and they confirmed that there would be shaft play not to exceed .6 mm.

It's normal for floating bearing type turbos, it may be different for ball bearing turbos. All floating bearing type turbos have some measurable side-side play in them which is more noticeable when there's no oil pressure in them. The pressurized oil on either side of the bearing is what takes up the play and keeps the bearing from failing. That's why even brief loss of oil pressure will kill a turbo.
