Buying a used TT- What do i need to know? Best years, reliability info etc

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I'm considering trading my b6 a4 in for a b5 S4 or Mk1 TT, basically i can lower my car payment and have a faster and better handling car- what do i need to know about these cars?

How is the reliability? Are they prone to breaking down a lot? I do not plan to heavily modify it, probably just a chip, exhaust, coilovers and wheels.. I do however drive a lot, 20,000+ miles per year on average..

What are the best years to get? Are certain years better or worse built?

Assume that any car i get will have 50k+ miles on it, what short and long term maintenance issues am i looking at?

Re: Buying a used TT- What do i need to know? Best years, reliability info etc

If you don't mod them much. The TT is pretty solid just like the other 1.8Ts.

You're looking at most of the same maintenance/problem items; timing belt, coilpacks, vacuum and boost leaks, and MAF sensors.

A quirk known to show up on the TT is the turn signals going out. Its a pretty quick fix if you know how to pull radio to replace the hazard light switch above it.

Again... this is if you don't mod the crap out of it. My parents have had very few problems with their unmodded TT. Mine was a bit of a pain until I got a couple kinks worked out. Mine was well beyond just chipping though so it was my own fault.

I haven't had a single problem on my car that I've had since 05'. The thing that did break was the front strut which is actually pretty common. It didn't literally break but maybe cracked, just made a squeaky noise. I drive maybe 18,000mi/ year on it, which is hard to believe but its just such a looker I'll drive 200miles in one day sometimes. I do take it for all its service intervals at Audi which can run around $1100. It's worth it since the car's a rock star.

I've had my 2002 TT 225 for 2 years. I had an APR chip, ModShack Stage II Induction Induction System and a Milltek cat back exhaust. The car has been the MOST reliable Audi I've ever owned! I did have to replace the hazard switch (it regulates the turn signals.) It was a $40 part and took 5 min to install. That's been it! I've driven a few S4's. The TT was as fast/faster than a stock Bi-Turbo. If you want a TT, get the 225HP model. It's a total different car than the 180HP one!

I'm actually selling my TT at the moment. I need the cash to buy a home. If you're looking for a MINT TT w/o any issues, here's mine: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=169590

    Thanks for the responses guys..

Are the 6 speed gearboxes prone to any problems on these cars?

    None that I've heard of.

Just like most of the new VW trannys they start to get a little funky on the 1st to 2nd gear shift but that is more a wear and tear issue it seems.

I have been using the same clutch since I bought my car in 05' so maybe it was replaced by dealer when it was certified preowned, but still I think that's pretty darn good. No issues-35k on clutch I really want to upgrade to a lightened flywheel and heavy duty clutch but can't complain about this one lasting as long as it has. Oh and get a 225, everyone will tell you to get a 180 for more modding potential but if you're like me you didn't buy it to be a race car. Stage II will be more than enough

Is the TT 5x100 or 5x112 ? Or does it vary by year or engine?

225s only came in quattro so if its not quattro you know its a 180 right off the bat.

225s only came in 6 speeds. There are very few 180s out there with the 6 speed gearbox. Its an expensive swap to go from the 5 speed to the 6 speed so its very uncommon.

You can look under the hood. The 225s all have an L shaped pipe running along the top and left hand side of the engine. They also have the inlet to their intake manifold on the right. Some 180s, mine included, have the 225 intake manifold but you should be able to tell the car was modded.

You can also look at the exhaust. 225s have two tips and 180s have 1. That isn't as reliable anymore as there are more twin tip exhaust systems for the 180 out there these days but its still a pretty good indicator.

    Those are the biggies.

your dreaming dude, they might feel similar, but put them side by side and the s4's gonna walk on you time and time again, chipped you might be able to hang, but your not gonna pull ahead, nice try tho...
