Screeching Noise When Starting Ignition

Since I bought my car a month ago a 99.5 Audi A4 1.8T, when I don't drive the car for a period of time 5-6Hours and seems to be more when its relatively cold but not freezing by any means, after I turn the key in the ignition there is a screeching noise. Sounds exactly as if the car was already running and I turned the key again, I have had two different so called "audi/vw" mechanics look at it and have gotten two different answers. One told me that it was the starter *although it never doesn't want to turn over, and has no problems starting up*, and the other said that it was clutch dust...? If anyone has experienced this problem or may be able to diagnose what the problem may be it would be a great help.

Thats what I was thinking originally as well, but been told no? Of course who knows with these mechanics anymore....It isn't so much a whining noise though, sounds exactly like the keys been turned again after already running...

Its your starter motor bushes are gone.... verry common on golf's tt's and a3's.... /need to pulll your starter motor apart and rebuild it or get a new one... depends on $$$$

my car does the same thing under what sounds like the same conditions. i have no idea what it could be, i thought belts maybe, but i havent noticed if it was mainly when the car was wet....

Try tuning the car on without the A/C engaged (i.e. push the econ button.) If the noise goes away, it could be your secondary fan, the electric one. Mine does it on startup and sounds like turd...

So just to follow, your saying push the econ button in before I turn the key over? The noise happens as soon as the key is turned over so there is no time to push the econ button at that time, just want to make sure I follow correctly. Thanks for your help and advice!

OH! Okay... So as soon as you turn the key to the ON position is when the noise happens? Or when you turn the motor on? I was saying turn the key to the ON position, hit the econ button and then start the engine...

mine did this after i replaced my clutch.. turned out i bent the shim between the transmission and block, and the starter was clipping the shim slightly. I pulled the starter out, trimmed the shim, and its been perfect since.

mine does it on ignition, not ON.....ill give this a try.

my clutch hasnt been touched...so im hoping thats not the issue

Ok that makes sense and I follow that, yeah you are correct when I turn the key over and start the motor thats when the noise occurs right after the motor turns over, almost like I have turned the key again. Ill give this a try and hopefully it works!

it could possibly be the starter grinding against the flywheel.
