235/35R19 vs. 245/35R19 Tire Size Delemma!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a few questions and have gotten multiple answers for each so please bear with me during this newbie question....

What does the FIRST number mean (235/35/R19) vs. (245/35R19)?

What does the SECOND number mean (235/35/R19) vs. (245/35R19)?

I know R19 means the actual wheel diameter.

Ok: Now, I have 4 Oettinger Wheels that are 19x8.5. They came with Falken FK452 tires 235/35R19 which bubbled up due to the belt expanding in the sidewall probably because of a pothole or something. I havn't figured out why they bubbled up but whatever it is, The Falken tires are not good and nobody should get them. (Personal Opinion).
Now I need all FOUR brand new tires. I was thinking of using two new condition tires from my old Maya STM's which are (245/35R19) which is also an 19x8.5" wheel and then purchasing two brand new tires (245/35R19).
My dilemma is: How will upgrading to (245) from (235) change the performance and overall drive terrain of my car?
What will my car do, and Should I buy 245/35R19's or 235/35R19's?

Thanks and I appreciate your help! Matt.

Re: 235/35R19 vs. 245/35R19 Tire Size Delemma!!!

first number is how wide the tire is, second number is the distance between where the rim ends and tire begins to where the tire ends..
if your wheels are 19x8.5 you could run both, i run 225 on 8.5s in the front and 245 on 9.5s in the back, 225 gives it a nice stretched look on the 8.5s, 235s would be perfect for you IMO

First number is width of tire. Second is the percentage of the width that is equal to the height of the sidewall of the tire.

Are you sure you had 235/45/19? Those are way too big for our car.

Buy 235/35/19 tires for all four wheels. Dont mix em, your not running on staggered setup anymore.

    235mm wide, 35mm tall, 19in diameter

and are you sure you had 235/45 on the mayas?? i dont think that would work without some considerable rubbing. Pretty much, dont mix them up...you have no reason to anymore.

As I said above the middle number is NOT a measurement.

It is an aspect ration. It is 35% of the width.

    Therefore a 235/35/19 would have a sidewall of 235*0.35= 82.25mm

With that being said... Considering the difference from 235 to 245 is the width of the tire, will I have any problems fitting the 245's onto my Oettinger wheels 8.5" wide.

I am 100.0000000% Certain that my Front two tires from the Maya STM's 8.5" wide wheel are 245/35R19 I had NO issues with them. My rear were staggered so that size is different...

So basically... If I go from a 235 to a 245, there would be more stretchable rubber which would make my sidewall bigger/taller therefore, without rubbing, it will be slightly better for my wheels and potholes....?

you wont have problem fitting them onto your Otteys. you can even go 255 if you want. and yes, it would be slightly better for you wheels b/c you will have a lesser chance of scrubing but still watch out for curbs and potholes. the down side is you will lose more power.

Re: 235/35R19 vs. 245/35R19 Tire Size Delemma!!!

(pilfered from tirerack & adapted for this thread)

    235/35R19 -vs- 245/35R19

The 235 indicates this tire is 235 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 235mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).

    235mm / 25.4 = 9.25"
    245mm / 25.4 = 9.65"

    Sidewall Aspect Ratio

Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio.

    235/35R19

The 35 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 35% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 235mm and that its section height is 35% of 235mm. By converting the 235mm to inches (235 / 25.4 = 9.25") and multiplying it by 35% (.35) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 3.24". If this tire were a 245/35R19 size, our calculation would confirm that the size would result in a section height of 3.38", approximately a 1/8-inch taller sidewall.

    235/35R19 -vs- 245/35R19

    235mm / 25.4 = 9.25"
    245mm / 25.4 = 9.65"

    9.25" * .35 = 3.24"
    9.65" * .35 = 3.38"

With 19" wheels, can we run 235/40/19? I see most are 35 (sidewall) - but will 40 fit a B6 w/sport suspension without rubbing or issues?

So did we get a definitive conclusion? 245 on the back is fine, but is 245/35/19 on the front ok?

What size tire would you run on a 8.5" wide wheel if you do NOT want a stretched look? 245's?

Its pretty simple: (235/35/R19) vs. (245/35/R19)?
    235's will look better
245's will be more comfortable (potholes)
    Either will work just fine.

235's has nothing to do with the thickness of the sidewall?
If you are looking for the stretched look than yes, it may look better.

Comfort wise.....it they where, say: 235/40 then they would ride smoother...

But the difference in side wall thickness from 235/35/R19 to 245/35/R19 is just about 3-4 mm...

Sorry bud, but 235 has a lot to do with the thickness as the '35' is a percentage of that.
    245's look like ballons(IMO) compared to 235's.
3-4mm (as you say) does make a differnece.

I personally went with 245/35/19 on a 19x8.5 ET 35 that was lowered and had no complaints. I'm not sure how the rodes are where other people live, but the tri-state area has some rim eating pot holes.

    and this form came up.
Heres my issue ... With these two setups I want to run.

    2001 A6 4.2 Q
    Miro 111 @ 19 x 9.5 ET 40 all four corners.
My final ET with ADAPTEC spacers Front ET 17 and Rear ET 15.

    Recommended tires per setup 245/35/19
The problem is I want to run BF Goodrich KDW2
