Re: how can I manually adjust headlights?

if you open the hood. on top of the headlights is a white screw. this screw is turned by a rather large allen key i believe, i may be wrong. I'm pretty sure u adjust height by turning those with the lights on

Do you know how to properly aim your headlights?

    http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

If you don't do it this way, you're blinding oncoming drivers and not putting light where it does the most good.

You'll need a VAG-com to set the position of the headlights in the ECU.

If you have the level sensor on the LF and LR suspension, you have OEM xenons.

Do a google image search to see what the sensor looks like...

Or, you can use VAG-COM/VCDS and try to access the headlight module. If you can then you at least had OEM Xenon headlights (doesn't mean you still do though, if they were replaced at some point).

    Alright so what I gather:
If you have headlight squirts, you have xenon.
If you have a foggy globe for the low-beam, you have xenon.

    I have both of those.

Headlight squirters were stock on all B5s, regardless of year and headlight type.

Xenon is a type of bulb. Do you even have those?

I'm not sure, I've been trying to figure that out. I posted a pic of my headlights above if you know what the xenons look like?

It's a type of bulb, not headlamp assembly. You posted a pic of your headlights. Do you use h7 halogen or d2s xenon bulbs?

It's pretty easy to know if you have xenon lights or not. Just turn them on at night. If they "burst" on and then "fade" in, having a delicious bluish tinge = Xenon/HID. If they just turn on and off like "regular lights" = Conventional/Halogen.

    OR

If people compliment you on your "fancy headlights" because they "look cool when they're on" = Xenon. If nobody every notices your headlights = Halogen.

Alright just went and checked. They definitely took a second to 'settle in'. Also, they are very white, and stupid bright. They have an interesting beam pattern to them.

Also you are 2001. Xenon's are more common on the 2001's (and I believe only an option since 2000).

Also, as far as adjusting the aiming on the xenon lights - yes, you are supposed to do it with VCDS. Basically you hit the "reset" button (more or less) and it takes the auto-levling adjustment motors to the "Zero Position", and however the car is sitting at that very moment is relearned as "normal ride height". That height is then associated with the "zero position" for purposes of auto-leveling. You then mechanically aim the lights so they are perfect, and you're done.

That said, if you just want the lights a little higher, you can just crank each side up a little bit with the mechanical adjusters. There is no specific need to reset the whole business - the result will basically be the same.

Xenon headlamps have a yellow warning triangle on one of the back covers.

Bumping this old thread. I recently acquired a used set of D2S oem hid headlights and have no idea how to adjust them manually. They are aimed to low for me to see the road ahead, I read the previous posts but still somewhat lost. Where are manual adjusters? I see the allen key adjuster for the lateral movement but do not know how it goes up and down.
