metal shavings in oil... SMALL after a mis-shift..

yea boy did i feel like an @ss after this. was shifting from 3rd into 4th quite high in the RPMS and somehow shifted into 2nd... tach was pinned passed whats displayed I instantenously had the clutch to the floor. NO cels no weird noises nothing. Drove the car the rest of the night "nicely". ran the car this morning from a cold start and it drove and sounded fine. Decided to do an oil change and stuck a magnet in the oil pain, collected a very small amount of metal shaving. These could have been from the oil pain itself but I am a bit concerned I did damage to the engine, the pistons, rods, and bearings to be exact....

anyone have any unfortunate experience with this?

is the metal shiny? If it's recent then I would guess it would look shiny and if it was older it would look faded ect... I think if you did any serious damage there would be some noticeable noise or the car would feel different. This never happened to me and i'm no pro but i'm just throwing in a few ideas to get things started.

do a compression test. that will tel you if you did any serious damage or not

yea I figured if it was driving fine and not making any weird noises Iam OK. I'll have to see if someone around here is a compression tester to test that out.

when doing the oil change today i noticed a oil/coolant combo (Grey chocolate in color) dripping down off the turbo onto the silicone outlet pipe (forget the name of this again) anyways I am now wondering if the turbo is on its way out. It holds great boost still and seems to spool up quick.

I am gonna start shopping for a new DD so when everything does decide to go south, I'll have something else to drive ;)

I guess if you play hard, and drive hard might as well be able to take a hard hit at the wallet :)

    thanks

If you damaged the engine with a money shift, it would probably be your valves. my friend money shited his m3 and blew 14 valves and cost him 1200$ to fix but then again his car sounded like absolute shit after he money shifted

car still runs good, full boost, no clicking or clunking noises from the engine, only suspension :)

i laughed at a friend who did this a while back in an RSX. He blew the whole engine and transmission....you should have seen how many guys at the dealership his mom slept with to get that paid for.... they were some lucky boys down there...

When i had a pos b&m shifter in my S4, i did the same thing racing a mustang. Was going for 4th and caught 2nd instead. Luckly my car ran fine afterwards, still strong as ever. I didnt notice any shavings in my oil though that i noticed. If the car still runs and drives fine, then your alright.

Not at all. I have even seen someone go into 1st when they were trying to go into 3rd while drag racing. Also since there is no real load on the engine when down shifting the rpms will go well past the rev limiter.

When this happens it is best to have the top of the pistons tested with a scope to see if there is any damage from the valves hitting the top of the pistons.

Re: metal shavings in oil... SMALL after a mis-shift..

ahh i hate knowing that tehre might be stress damage to the pistons.. well luckily for me I am lokoing to rebuild the engine soon so this may be a good excuse...

turbo is starting to leak more and more oil/coolant combo.... no, oil from engine is not contaminated with coolant..

thanks for all the input everyone

    Josh
