    Size of stock exhaust tip

i will be buying a set of bigger exhaust tips, but i would love to know what size are my stock exhaust tips? 2003 1.8T Q.

Tried measuring it, but it gets a bit tricky, and I dont know if they measure from the inside circumference or the outside. I am getting 2 to 21/2 inches.

    Eh?

Re: Size of stock exhaust tip

from my measurement and iirc it's 2". Half a inch more doesn't change the fact that the stock tips are pea shooters.

lol.... thanks.... that puts my choices at 3.5 or 4" replacements...... would both fit my stock lower back spoiler, and is that .5" going to make much of a visual difference?

    In short, yes.

4" fill the cutout perfectly, but can look a little ricey if not done right. 3.5" rolled edge tips look pretty good IMO, but could be too small depending on your personal view point.

    need some vibrant 1304s?

2.5" inlet is a bit tricky to weld onto the 1.75" pipe when you take off stock exhaust tips

    hey OutlawDon....

that looks sick..... but are those stock exhausts? i dont want a super 4" tip on a tiny stock exhaust! or do i?

and do those tips extend all the way to the exhaust box? so it looks seamless, or would there be a visible 1.75" pipe showing?

No, they are not stock exhaust. I got Magnaflow 14851 mufflers with 4" tips welded on. Yes, tips extend all the way to the muffler. Order from hottexhaust.com and use coupon code "vento" Total price for two mufflers will be $186 with free shipping.

Get the beveled edge...look classier. The rolled looks cheaper.

Re: Size of stock exhaust tip

if you are putting tips on stock mufflers, keep in mind that the stock mufflers are tucked and sit higher. 4 inch tips fit but there will be very minimal clearance around the plastic cutouts.

larger tips cause more turbulance, and thus more heat...i've seen a few people's rear start to melt b/c of big tips with little clearance.

personally I like 3.5s, they fill out nice with about 1/4 in clearance all the way around. they actually look stock until you park next to another A4 or even an S4...which both look small in comparison.

Re: Size of stock exhaust tip

that is great advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was also thinking that the 4" might be too big for some reason! anyone else heard/has such an issue with bigger tips?

i am leaning towards 3.5" beveled, and maybe a muffler!

    this never ends, does it!

no...it never ends. you will mod until you are bored and then sell it to buy something else which requires 'little' modding, and mod the shit out of that too.

as previously mentioned, 4" tips perfectly fill the cutoff. I had a milltek with 4" tips and really liked it, but some may think that it's ricey. 3.5" tips keep it looking classic!

why not just order a Milltek, MTM, APR or AWE exhaust and be done with it, instead of trying to make the stock exhaust look like something it is not.

Do these mufflers give any performance gains with the stock piping? I understand there is a noticeable difference in terms of visuals and acoustics, but I was just wondering if there are any performance improvements as well.

Nope. Until you increase all the pipe diameters leading to the mufflers all you are doing is make it sound different.

unless you swap the entire exhaust system, there is no performance gain.... and even then, the exhaust swap is mostly (80%) sound and maybe 20% performance gain, and only when everything else is upgraded (ECU, turbo etc)...

as for only the muflers, its purely for sound, and i honestly do not mind the stock sound at all..... i am trying to get a balance between looks/comfort/performance.....

so for my needs, a nice looking tip is all i need!

Any exhaust place will be able to do it. A lot of people have gone to Meineke to have the tips replaced.

Honestly, its just cut, make a sleeve adapter (since stock piping will be smaller than tip inlet) and weld on. Costs about $50-$60 depending on the shop.

gaith, if you u plan on going further than the 1+ you are planning, i would look for a used exhaust on here. Just sit back and calculate how much you will be paying for muffler, tips , and install...... the AWE exhaust have 3.5" tips. Thats what im running now. I basically got my exhaust for 100 + installation and my stock exhaust ... These deals come up once in a while.....

Re: Size of stock exhaust tip

I actually just got my 4.0 tips put on my car yesterday. The people who did my tips said it didnt matter how big the inlet whatever was because its just spot welded on. When my stock tips were cut off they showed me the stock tips were bent in and only welded in 2 spots. So why does everyone make such a big deal about the inlet and outlet causing so much problems. Can anyone explain>?
