well, when my coil packs went my cell didnt flash. my CEL did flash one time after i changed the coil packs and i was getting missfires to all my cylinders. it turned out to be an engine temp sensor. but considering you have the origional coil packs in still it's most likely them.

Ok...This is really a DIY replacement too. DO NOT pay $500 for a stealership to install it.
Your symptoms are identical to mine when one of my coils went bad. You really ought to have a VAG-COM hooked up to diagnose for sure. I think ECS has OEM coilpacks for $45. It is about a 5 min job. To diagnose which coil pack is bad, move the coils from cylinder to cylinder. If the misfire follows a particular coil pack from cyl to cyl then that is your bad coil. Replace it with the new one and youre all set. It's about as easy as changing spark plugs...maybe easier.

NM I just realized you have a 2001. IIRC the recall didn't cover MY '98.

when they went out on my A4 it was the exact same symptoms you got... I'm at 99.99% sure that's what your issue is.
Flashing CEL, no power, and sputtering like an old misfiring Pinto....that was my experience last September.

It just so happened that I installed an intake the same day. I was begining to think that it was a boost hose, or vacume line that was split, or loose. Totall loss of power, and had to limp back to home. Checked all my connections, and all looked good. Very rough idle, and no power, CEL flashing just like all have stated. I havent got it to the dealer yet, but I just thought it had to be the intake that was causing the problem, since it happened within five minutes of the test drive. Hope its covered undetr the recall!!
