Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know that factory door speakers are 6 3/4"....but I'd like install a set of 6 1/2" components. Will those work without modification or am I gonna have to fab some stuff?

Also...anyone put tweets in the factory tweet location? Any issues?

yep they will fit - just cut out the factory speaker and reuse the framing to mount the new speaker

Re: Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

You don't have to cut the speaker. 6.5" speakers fit just fine onto the speaker mounting pods. Most aftermarket speakers have a variety of mounting holes and spacing on 6.5s for this reason.
If you're speakers have big magnets/frame you might have to cut out the back of the pods (I had to and it worked just fine) or fabricate new mounting rings out of mdf.

Re: Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

Yeah, me too. I just took out the factory bose speakers and popped in 6.5" components, is the bose mounting different than the regular speakers?
I had to get creative with the tweeters as I couldn't find a good way of mounting them with the provided hardware. so I padded around them with double sided 3m tape and they fit snugly in the factory location.

Re: Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

Do the non Bose radio's have self amped speakers or are they powered by the HU??

I wouldnt mind replacing my interior speakers for more clarity and maybe adding a sub but if i need to install an amp for interiors..i would rather not.

Also anyone make a custom sub box for the trunk on the side where they give you the tray??

From what I recall: Front is amped from head unit and rear is amped from amp in trunk.
As for the sub box, there was just a thread on this. Search for A4 Moda, his shop makes them.

I am redoing my system in my car now and I just cut out a speaker ring from 3/4 inch MDF. You can get an installer to make you some up if you don't feel like doing it yourself and the speakers will be mounted in the door a LOT better.

I would never mount a speaker in plastic if I could help it.

Good info guys. Fabbin' up some mdf mounts isn't a big deal, I just hoped that I wouldn't really have to.

Can't seem to find the custom sub box thread that was referenced above....maybe I'm just blind or using the wrong search terms?

Depends on the type of music you listen to, your budget, amount of power you're feeding them, etc.

I used Focal speakers in my previous car and liked them a lot.

I have to sets of the JL Audio ZR650's with a JL 450/4 pushing them. But it is best to go listen to many different brands before you go spending this kind of money I did on speakers. I worked in a car audio shop and I listened to every brand we had for 6 months before I made my decision.

Re: Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

well, i guess my budget is really not a problem. i have enough set aside for a decent system. i was just looking at something that wouldn't require an amp, that was just plug and play. i dont really feel like cutting up wires and whatnot to put an amp in, i just want to be as near to stock as possible. i guess i listen to pretty much everything. i like bass, but not to the point where it drowns out the treble. my current bass setting is 5 on symphony, and treble is 3. that's kinda where i like it now if it helps.

Re: Door speakers: Will 6 1/2" fit?

Well to get anything that sounds better than factory your gonna need more power. I replaced my factory symphony head with a double din screen and it did help the sound out quite a bit, and I was REALLY impressed that the factory paper speakers sounded that good. You could go into replacing speakers, but most of the time these newer factory systems are engineered to sound pretty good with minimal power. Once you go replacing bits and pieces you might not get what your looking for.

Personally, if you are wanting just a small improvment. Replace your factory head. You would be amazed at what just sending a good clean signal can do to start off. Then do a four channel amp and door speakers second.
