Lost about 4 quarts of oil in 1,000 miles??

Just did valve cover gaskets (my Self). Complete oil change, and new plugs.I put 7 quarts in, now i'm at 1,000 miles since the service i did, and i have lost about 4 quarts of oil.

I know it isnt leaking because my belly pan isnt on and there are no stains on my driveway, i also checked the valve covers, all edges....nothing, no oil leak there either, and lastly i cant smell any oil burning off if it where leaking. I know cars burn more oil once they get into higher miles, and that are S4 eats up oil before turbos go. No dentist drill or anything out of the normal, Everything is just fine, except that i have lost about 4 quarts, anyone have any ideas?

what do your exhaust tips look like? has to be leaking somewhere, 4 quarts is a lot!

check your ic piping....i was losing oil and for the life of me could not find the leak. like you i had no oil stains on the ground in my garage. popped off the ic piping and what do you know....that where 3/4-1 qt went. same thing happen to someone else i know...lost 5 qts of oil and found in their ic and ic piping. best of luck!

I really hope its just in my intercooler hoses, thats a cheap fix right? It has something to do with the pvc system and i need to replace the round black valve behind the y-pipe correct? I really hope it's in there, if not it's going ot be more expensive. No money for k04 upgrade but i have a pair of k03's sitting at my place. We'll see. if any one else has any input pleaase post thank you

steps i would take.

DOUBLE CHECK to make sure the car is cold when you check the oil and really see if its down 4 quarts. Its hard to believe its four quarts especially since you dont see any leaking with your belly pan off, and that you dont see it burning out your tailpipe. but at the same time i think you are running open downpipe so you may not be able to see if the smoke is comming out the tailpipe.

Check the pcv valve to make sure its good to go.

Look into your intercooler hoses to make sure its not there.

Get a leak down test to make sure the motor is not passing it

get your turbos looked at.

I'm running piggies with main cats still in, nothing behind it. And you knwo what nevermind about me asking you if i have to pull bumper off, i remember taking off the intercooler hose when i changed my oil filter last time. But i think i am going to rule out the motor burning it up since there is no smoke. Thanks guys

what do your exhaust tips look like?

What would be noticeable on the exhaust tips? I noticed mine have black residue on the bottom of the tips and my mechanic saw oil in my tb boot. So I'm a bit paranoid about my turbos.

Thats just the exhaust gasses, your fine, and there is supposed to be a little oil in your Thottle body boot, but if you stick your finger under it and you can see oil on your fingers then you have a leaky TBB, if not your fine

yea you dont want oil in your tbb but a little oil in the pcv system and intercooler hoses is fine. NOT 4 QUARTS THOUGH.

I lost in the neighborhood of 5 and 1/2 quarts, it was all hanging out in my intercooler pipping. The front side of the turbo's had an issue with the back side of the turbos so they took a trip threw my motor

Lets break down a turbo real quick

The first time I blew my turbos the back side of the turbo went, pictured above is the turbine housing (generally when this part is blown the oil goes in the exhaust), the second time I blew my turbos the front side of the turbos went also pictured above as the compressor housing (when this part goes it generally dumps the oil into the intercooler pipping). The little stuff in between regarding fighting and taking a trip threw my motor was a joke, but was meant in good fun. Pictured below are the little pieces of the compressor wheel\/ \/ \/

you dont want to see oil in your TBB

When i tore my TBB and i changed it there was a little oil in there, not a whole bunch but a little, i asked around when i found it and everyone said it was normal to have a LITTE oil in there.

Weird thing is after i got off work i went across the street to autozone and bought some oil. Before putting it in i check the oil level three times, it was REALLY low, so i put 1 quart in it, Then i check the Dipsdtick again and i found that it was filled up to normal levels, so maybe my dipstick is reading incorrectly. because liek you stated above and many others have before in the past, when your oil gets that low it shoudl send a signal to the oil light disply saying its low or whatever. I have this entire weekend to my self and will look into the problem further and get back to all of you. Thanks for the help everyone.

if you didn't change the oil yourself I would say maybe the oil lube place you took it to did not fill it enough. They prolly through 5 quarts and shipped it. A 1/2 quart in the oil filter and 2 quarts down would put you at 2 1/2 quarts....4 quarts is absolutely insane for 1000 miles!

I have taken both intercooler hoses off and check there, no oil. On friday i was almost on empty when i checked it in the morning. I then put two quarts in and it read overfilled. I drove it around for a while and the oil temp started to get close to 250 under normal driving conditions. I have overfilled my oil in the past and i noticed the oil temp was hotter than normal when you do this. So that is what i am getting now. i am assuming i am getting really bad reading from the dip stick....

has there been any problems other b5's have experienced with bad oil reading through the dip stick. Whats the deal here

Your dipstick only registers down to 1-quart low at the "low" line. If the dipstick is completely dry then you know you are more than 1-quart low.

Don't overfill your oil. If you know it is overfilled you need to remove some oil as soon as possible.

If you are getting inconsistent oil level readings from your dipstick then I would assume operator error.

Are you pushing the dipstick all the way down? Do you wipe it and take multiple readings? Is your car parked on a level surface? Are you letting the oil settle down after a drive? The oil will read high if you park it from a drive and check it immediately. Let the oil settle for a bit before checking.

The plastic parts of the dipstick tend to break from time to time as they get brittle from the extreme heat of the 2.7t. But that would be obvious.

Yep im checking everything pretty consistenlly, cold readings. i am going to chnnge the oil today and measure how much comes out. Then put in 6.5 new quartz and check every day inthe mornings. We'll see what happens,i called the dealership and asked if they have ever has customers call iin for bad oil reading, they said no. Thanks anyways
