Fuel gauge reading stuck on empty

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been reading a few posts where this seems to be an issue w/ alot of folks that the fuel gauge is reading incorectly ot not at all.

The B5 threads have a DIY on the fuel level replacement and im assuming our is nearly the same.

My son left the LCD's on and my battery went dead over night. After I got it started is when I noticed the gauge not reading. I am only 16 miles into a full tank. Drove for about an hour and still no change. Turned the car on and off a few times and still no change. I even ran my VAG and didnt see any faults anywhere.

    Questions...

    1. Other than the dealer, where can this be purchased and at what cost?

    2. How is the replacement on the level sensor compared to the B5 write up?

No need to replace anything just yet, it will probably reset itself over a tank of fuel.

This happened to me a number of times when I disconnected my battery. IIRC, I refueled right away thinking I had actually run out of fuel. The gauge read about 1/3 when I had filled it up. It was a day later or so and it somehow reset itself with no intervention on my part.

Re: Fuel gauge reading stuck on empty

Ok thats good to know. I got a story though. Running late and saw the needle on empty, lights blinking and all. Got to the gas station and started to fill up. Pump kept shutting off like I was full then I swear about a 1/2 gallon spewed out because I kept topping off thinking WTF is wrong with this pump!

I then realized I had filled up before the weekend started and havent drove the Avant since I filled up.

Ok, im gonna go burn off this tank in a couple days and let you know how it goes.

    Thanks!

Well the same thing happened to me not too long ago and all I needed to do was replace the battery and everything went back to normal. IIRC you just bought a new battery so that's probably not the case (although my battery was only a few months old..), unless you're getting some serious draw from somewhere. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit then reconnecting to see if it works? If that doesn't work and it doesn't reset after a while I'd check the battery and maybe even replace it before doing anything with the fuel system. good luck.

i'm havin the same problem. not because of a dead battery though. i think it's because gas is like close to $4 a gallon and i can't afford to fill it up past the empty mark

That did not work out so well. I thought I could get a close trade for my B6 but the dealership that had the B5 S4 Avant wanted 18 and would only give me 9K on my B6.

Also my financial situation has changed and I cancelled my 335 order. After my re-fi on my house, I finished up my back yard, added more real estate to the property, and paid off all high interest CC's. Additionally, I lost 3/4 of my business/job and hae become nearly un-employed.

I'm having the same problem after I disconnected my battery. I just figured I blew a fuse or something and haven't done anything about it yet. Guess I'll try disconnecting the battery again.

Yes, if you disconnect the battery or have a low battery, the gauge cluster goes haywire.

It will eventually fix it self...you can disconnect the battery again to trick it back into service or you can scan the cluster with a VAG-COM and reset it.
