Need help on ICM and Ignition codes!!

    Hi.
I Have done a VAG-COM and these codes have come up.....
    P1393 / 17801
Ignition Coil Power Output Stage 1: Electrical Malfunction

    P1394 / 17802
Ignition Coil Power Output Stage 2: Electrical Malfunction

    P1395 / 17803
Ignition Coil Power Output Stage 3: Electrical Malfunction

If someone could help me out with these codes i would be gratefull.
i cannot find anything stating what these codes are about, whether their to do with the ICM or the coil packs themself.
Im just after some defenitions on these, possable causes, and solutions.
and how they hell did i get 3 of them??!!??

i have done a test on my ICM, as follows......
    L1/E1 is 1207ohms
    L2/E2 is 1215ohms
    L3/E3 is 1207ohms

    ICM layout...
    E1-- E2---E3
    L1-- L2-G-L3

is this bad? what are the ohms ment to be? is L2/E2 fualty?? is the ICM fualty? could this be cuasing the Ignition Coil Power Output Stage codes to show up?

    I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8L, V6, 12V, FWD, AT.

any help would be much appreciated!
    thanks!

Re: Need help on ICM and Ignition codes!!

i done a VAG-COM about a month ago, a misfire on cylinder 6 was reconzied.
i VAGed it again and the misfire code dissapears but in its place the 3 ignition coil power output stage 1 thru 3 came up.
so thats why ive tested the ICM.
    the plugs are clean.
no arking in the sprak plug cables.
i dont have a VAG-COM handy to switch the coil leads over to see if the misfire stays in cylinder 6.
and i dont want to buy new coil packs to find out i didnt need new ones (im not made of money)

the only problem is a slight vibration once i get to 60mph. other then that the car drives like normal.

what symptoms are you having? When my ICM went bad the car wouldn't idle and sounded very rough (bubbly?) upon acceleration (think WRX). Try testing the continuity between the ground pin (pin 3 on the 5 pin side) and the 4 pins on the other side. When I did that, I got one value that was way off from the others.

Re: Need help on ICM and Ignition codes!!

    thanks for your reply.
the ony symptom i have noticed is a slight vibration at 60mph and up.
ive messured the ohms of all 4 pins (shown above). they all shown resistance.
how you mean in continuity, the voltage reading between the pins?
i dont have any major problems with my car, i just noticed the CEL go from a misfire on cylinder 6 to coil power output stage 1, 2 and 3, the "why" to this happening is bugging me.
i just dont want to drive somewhere and she wont start becuase the icm was fualty.
    the icm is oem.

Re: Need help on ICM and Ignition codes!!

You need to measure the resistance between pin 3 and the 4 pins on the other side. When I did mine, I got these values : 400 160 160 160. I assumed the 400 was a shot spark, and turns out it's true. However, if an ICM is shot, you will definitely notice it at idle (at least I did)- the idle will bounce up and down and when you get on the gas you won't really go anywhere. I was limited to 5 PSI when mine died. Is there someone local you can borrow one from for a second? It would suck to spend the money on one and not have it work.

Re: Need help on ICM and Ignition codes!!

    Actually I just noticed this:

    ICM layout...
    E1-- E2---E3
    L1-- L2-G-L3

The ICM should have 4 pins on one side and 5 pins on the other, not 3 and 4 as far as I know. Not too sure if it changed between years (I have 98.5). Doesn't make too much sense to me as there are 4 cylinders though...
