HELP ! B7 Manual Transmission 3rd Gear Grinding ?!!?!

Hey guys, I need some HELP and FAST

Recently i Noticed that when I shift from 2nd Gear to 3rd Gear Above 3200 RPM, the transmission gear Grins and its pretty loud.

At this point, I brought the attention to a Audi Dealer and they told me they Decline warrenty coverage Due to Aftermarket Coilovers which they "THINK" resulted the damage of the transmission.

MY Guess ?
I think its synchro gone bad ?
I currently have 17,800 miles on a 2005.5 B7 A4 Quattro

WHat to do?
I AM bringing it to another dealer and hopefully they will fix it, and the only reason I would think that they wouldn't is because their lazy and will cost them soo much time ?

ANY HELP WOULD VERY MUCH appreciated!!

yep yep it sounds like the syncros! i have an 05.5 Avant and i had the same proplem at like 500 miles or less. i took it to the dealer and they had to get a new tranny sent from germany and replace the old one. mine wouldnt even get into gear 2nd into 3rd past 3200 rpms just a loud grinding sound.

So im pretty sure most of you guys on here were aware of my third gear grinding and not getting in. well to all who didnt i had some tranny issues. anyways after about 2 fucking months it was declared that my car would be fixed by the dealer at a big cost.What had happen was i took it into the dealer around early December about grinding issues. At that time it wasnt that bad. so they told me to bring it back in but i had got into a slight accident so that delayed things 2 months. i had taken it in about 2 weeks ago and they finally fixed it. I got some pics of my third gear syncro which was really fucked up loll. So in this case after they replaced my third gear it still feels a little weird but o well.








anyways i hope this can help you out man. Let me know what happens.

So should I Change my whole suspension back to STOCK before I bring it in??

Because in a matter of 10 hours, I have to send it to Another dealer see if they will repair it and wont Bug me about my Coilovers.

i just had that happen last sat and i just posted asking about this b/c the dealer said its my syncros and they will need my car for a week and a half

i hope he was joking with you. btw, for the warranty to be voided on a specific part, the upgrade has to prove that it caused the defect. of course no one wants to get into that wit audi, but for them to say your suspension caused this is complete bs.

x2. what is their justification that a dropped car caused effects in the shifting of the car or climbed inside the tranny and f'd with the syncros. they're full of shit. just tell them the drop is for show if they attempt to link a lowered car to aggressive driving

I don't mean to sound like an asshole but it really annoys me when i see old topics being brought up in new threads all the time. ITS CALLED SEARCH.

This exact topic has been brought up before and the reason i know this is because i had the same EXACT problem as the OP here. My point is that since we had the same EXACT problem, by doing a search for this EXACT topic, it should have come up with all the answers you would need.

Anyway...when i told the dealer about my problem they told me it was my syncro but instead of just replacing certain parts in the transmission they ordered me a whole new one sent over from Germany and they installed it under warranty...with that said by being a tuner you should know plenty about a car. Which would mean that you can without a doubt argue with your dealer that by having lowered suspension has NOTHING to do with a default in your transmission. They should replace your tranny or syncro without any charge. Any other way would just be ripping you off.

Ron, you have two options in my opinion.

Option 1: Take it to another dealer where you wouldn't have to argue with them or AoA about the coilovers not causing syncro problems on a tranny.

Option 2: Take the coilovers off and take it to the 2nd dealer you plan to go to so they can fix it without any worries about denying your warrantied repair.

After doing some research / SEARCH on all the threads in Audizine and audiworld,
I have come to the conclusion that :

Our Audi Transmission Gears are weak, especially 2nd / 3rd Gear.

Im sorry to say, but I think a car should be able to take the beat if the driver occasially wants to say, do some fast driving on a open country road, auto cross, track school? My audi is cutting it.
Guess I have to drive it and shift under 3000 RPM now

I do REV Match all the time when I down shift.

Shhhhh... I tracked my car and screwed it up theres another thread and this guy has Tiptronics and he tracked his car HARD 8 times and have no problems. So im jumping on the conclusion that Audi have weak Manual transmissions.

Not trying to bag on you Ron but making an observation. I'm kind of happy I got a Tiptronic car now. Because of your thread, this is the first time I hear about manual audi trannies having synchro problems. I almost traded in my A4 to get a manual version so that I can take advantage of the APR KO4 upgrade and Stasis differential mods. Now I'm content I have TIP.

hmm somtimes when i put it in 2nd or 3rd around 3k rpm like doing a slow shift my shifter is LOUD.. was wondering if thats considered a grind. (makes like a loud metallic click )

Well a little UPDATE on my car,

After my car was spending a week in the dealership, they decided to replace the whole transmission under warrenty instead of repairing the 3rd gear synchros,
Soooo lets hope this new transmission will last me a while hopefully.

my tranny has been rebuilt 1st and 3rd gear!! my dealer declined my warranty and told Audi of Australia that i had mods on my car and now they have put a restricted warranty on my car and now every dealer knows that, as they have it in all there data basis... cost me AUD4,000 to get it fixed from a non dealer.. audi wanted 8k for the gear box and $150 an hour for labour!!

o and i took all my mods off before i took it in but when i had it serviced before that they took note that i had an exhaust, coilovers and boost guage... never knew about the ko4... there arseholes in australia.. they dont care for the customers

i just got my car back today after 2 1/2 weeks and audi as well decided to relpace my whole transmission as well and did it under warrenty!!

What I've noticed on my b7 is that when you are going from 4th to 3rd with the clutch depressed fully and switch faster then normal, it will always grind. Car only has 5k miles.....

Is this something different ? I am making an appointment in the morning for them to check it out.

Im not sure about your case,
But my only grins when I shift above 3500 RPM, either from 2nd -> 3rd or Downshift 4th -> 3rd. Under 3500 RPM it wont grin, but do bring it into the dealer's attention.

Yea, something like that in my case as well. Higher rpm's it will grind. It is only 4th-3rd.
This is ridiculous. You push the car a little bit and when you want to down shift you get grinding. I thought it was me in the beginning. The clutch on my bmw is different, but it kept happening again and again. So, time to take it to the dealer.

To those of you who had their transmissions replaced...did you all have your cars chipped? What did you do when you brought it into the dealer?

^^ Yes I had my car chipped with APR 91+
And yes, I had the Stock program as well as the security lock out.

So before I brought the car to the dealer, I just put it back to stock mode as they WILL be doing a test drive.

Well, I just tried from 2-3 and it is doing it as well.
So it's grinding from 2-3 and from 4-3.
Which dealership did you take it to ? I am in San Jose as well.
Any tips on explaining this to them or just straight forward.

It was grinding from 2-3 and sometimes 4-3.

I took it to Stevens Creek Audi and just straight up say, its grinding from 2-3 and might be the synchros?

ya mine was doing the same... just grinding above 3500 rpm from 2-3 and down shift 4-3... my car was chipped when i took it in w/ giac 91 and i also have the stock program along w/ all the others so i switched it back to stock... they didnt say any thing about it and replaced the transmission... i did the same i just took the car in and said my car grinds when i shift at high rpm's going to 3rd gear..
