    Royal Purple in 3.0

So maybe i am wrong but i had the feeling that Royal Purple is somewhat of a popular choice among the B6's here...

My 80K service is due, the car is at the dealer, and i thought hey why not switch up the oil and see what all this talk is about. In my 3.0 Owners manual it says the engine needs 0W-30 oil...and Royal P doesnt make that grade of oil. In fact, none of the brands at Nappa, Pep Boys and Autozone had that grade except Mobil.
Mechanics at Audi dont pick up the phone, i waited 15 minutes long while they were being paged and never got to talk to anyone.

So my question, was i wrong about other 3.0's using Royal P? If not, what grade do you put in the engine? And last but not least, why the F! does Audi use a oil that appearantly is extremely rare/hard to get?

    thanks

    Re: Royal Purple in 3.0

If you do a search on here for oil, you will find there are several different manufactureres to pick from and TONS of information. This is probably the biggest question people have is what oil should i run. Mobile 0-40 is probably the most popular simply because it is the easiest to find, Castrol is also popular.

Oh yeah i am aware there are a ton but i am not asking what to use i am simply wondering why the oil Audi uses is so rare and why Royal purple is mentioned everywhere but according to my dumbass dealer "it is not recommended to use a different grade" and Royal P doesnt have 0W grade so i was just looking for any hints

    Re: Royal Purple in 3.0

IMHO, I would not use Royal Purple motor oil. Ihave run it once in my pickup and was not happy with it. Too thin, with the pan filled to spec, at idle the oil pressure was so low it would trigger the low oil shut down sensor. PSI was running 3 to 4 with RP, switched back to Castrol Syntec and idle oil PSI was running 6 to 8. These numbers were confirmed with the dealer, while the truck was hooked to a dealer diag. scan tool.

    Re: Royal Purple in 3.0

Alright so i went to Audi and double checked because i even have friends here locally that have A4's and use Royal Purple etc.
So the guy at Audi said he has never even heard of 0W oil. All they use at Audi is 10W-30 Castrol oil. So i dont know wtf is going on anymore.
Can anyone help me or give me some input? Maybe someone with a 3.0 that has diff oil in?
Maybe this 0W specification in the Manual is a 02 thing? I know those are a little different than the after 02 models

although i am new to audi's i have used amsoil in all of the racing honda engines that i have built for myself and friends and have never had a problem with o.p. and it also feels like it runs smoother. hell even my tanny fluid is amsoil but that aside here is a link for amsoil 5w-40 you need. the 0w-30 is the old stuff and this is the new.

In my 2003 owners manual it doesn't say you need 0W-30, it just said " The engine oil which was first put into your engine has a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30" I think you can use 5W-30or 5W-40 if you can't find 0W-30. I too plan on using Royal Purple in my engine, but the dealership just did my last oil change , so it might be a while. I also have 3.0.

Use oil that is certified to VW503.01. It is a pretty strick standard that Audi recommends. Oil bottle should have it listed on the back.

    Re: Royal Purple in 3.0

Many people use Mobil 1 0w-40 because it is VW503.01 certified, and shows it on the back of the bottle. The certified oils are for their 10k oil change interval, which most people don't do anyway. I change it every 5k.
I get the Mobil 1 at my local autoparts store, they have a good selection of weights.

If your local Audi guy has never heard of a 0w oil, I'd be leary of bringing my car to him for service.

The guy simply said i'd have to sign a waver saying that i take all responsability etc. Oh and what grade RP do you use? Did you change it yourself or what?
