I just got quoted from my dealer 1400 bucks to replace the cam position sensor. Is this way too much and if so in what range should it really be??

WHAT!!!!! Fuck that, go tell that stealership to shove it. There is no way that sensor costs any more than $200. These types of sensors are very expensive, but not anything like you were quoted with labor. Labor to replace just the sensor should take no more than 1 hour if they don't need to pull out your front end. You shouldn't need to do that though to get to the sensor. Did they tell you anything else, like if they need to re-time the cams or anything? If it's just the sensor itself, you can pretty much do it yourself.

they told me that the timing was off. So im guessing like you said that they need to re-time the cams. Also my serv. adv. told me that it was a 5 hour job.

Re: Cam position sensor replacement cost?

It took me about 1-2 hours to re-time my intake cam FYI. Audi charges ~$100hr. Ask them if it's just the intake cam, exhaust cam or both that's off. Also go to the parts dept and see what a sensor really costs. I would not pay ANY MORE than $600 for the new sensor and re-timing of the cams. Even that is just outrageous IMO. If your timing is off on the cams and you are getting a fault code from the sensor then the sensor is doing its job and is not broken. Sensor should not have to be replaced at that point...

Re: Cam position sensor replacement cost?

i just had this done...fortunitely for me it was done under warranty...so i don't know how much they would have charged...i was having symptoms similar to a blown coilpack...surging engine, rough idle, etc...turns out there were random misfires and an error code from the 02 sensors as well as from the cam position sensor...they replaced the sensors and all is better...and while they were working, they found a hole in the timing belt and changed that out for me...so now i can save $1000+ since there will be no need for a future timing belt replacement...

sorry i can't help you with the priceing though...how did u find out you had a problem with the sensors?
