I think I'm fixing my wastegate rattle.....

I finally got fed up. I've only had the car for about 1.5 mos now and I can't handle having an Audi A4 (read: nice german car) that rattles when I decel. But, I can't convince myself, much less my wife, that I need to buy a $700+ turbo for the car i just bought that works. So, I took it off. And that was a bitch. But, I finally got it off and it appears that the wastegate has either dropped or burned out or they just broke a lot of bushings in some of the swinging or moving parts of the wastegate flap. For example, I can wiggle the flap or lever on the side, i feel a little too much. and when compared to my friends 16g turbo he conveniently had laying around, his didn't move at all. Now the actuator is tight, but thats about it. so, i repositioned the nuts on the actuator rod and "tightened" it up. my fear is that it will effect boost level. I was reading 6-7 psi before i took the turbo off. has anyone done this? will i blow up my engine? any suggestions?

i didnt spend near 700 for my k04, i got it for the same reason as you....

i havent put it in yet or pulled the old one out...

let us know how it works, just be careful getting into boost when it goes back in, and you shouldnt have any issues. slowly push the pedal til its at the floor, stop if you see too much boost...

How/where did you find a cheaper k04? and can I have yours?

i bought it used.. jumped on it, got it for ~420

put the k03 back in and let us know how the adjustment worked...

You cant just tighten the wastegate untill it gets tight. If your actuator wiggles freely, its blown. New turbo.

hes saying the actuator isnt wiggling, its the flapper...

This last MOFO was somethin else. I was thinking how wierd it was that this was all going so smoothly. Then my car took two steps back and kicked me in the nuts with this guy. I'm sure it would have been easier if i jacked my car up and removed the under belly and took off my front end but at this point, I felt like my car was challenging me.

you usually drain your oil and disconnect that from your oil pan and leave it attached to the turbo when you pull it.

If you already got it back together it just means you can change the turbo out faster.

No need to K04 it. I got it all back together and after resolving some coolant issues, the car is running great. I can even hear more turbo. weeee! And it's still boostin 6-7 psi. Would i like it to boost more? Sure. but i'll take what i can get. Just be sure if you want to do this that you have a gallon of coolant ready. Damn it bled like a stuck pig when I took off the turbo coolant line.

Who cares about beating a grand am gt? what kinda benchmark is that? Who goes around sayin, "yeah, those grand am gt's....pretty quick.....but i can pull on one...." ?????? hahahahaha . My car will never be fast. so i'm not gonna waste my time. for me, its not worth it if its not faster that my last car (13.7) I think its just something that happens when you put time in a car. i love the A4, but it won't be a fast car. just fast enough to merge into traffic.

Isn't it funny though. I have the same ones. Cheapy fake leather seats too for $29k. How about a real turbo? A4's do look like high dollar w/right wheels. Glad you fixed your rattle-i'm working on big turbo. Rattling goes away when wastegate
flies down your exhaust.

wow, glad i don't have a 28rs.... i'd feel like someone just spit on me... i can't wait to get a bigger turbo... (the k04 is only going to hold me over for so long!)

:) see thats what i mean. do you realize what it would take to get my A4 to a 13.2???? it'd be nice sure, but I haven't won the lottery yet. I get past the frustration of not being able to beat the Grand Am GT by laughing to myself, "Ha ha, you drive a POS domestic thats gonna fall apart at the seems after 5 years and not have any resale value or class from day 1." Then I turn on my seat warmers and "bend the block" j/k i'm not really gangsta like that.

Update: Don't tighten the actuator too much.

don't tighten the actuator to the point where there is tension on it at rest. tighten it just before this point. you may still have play when you wiggle the wastegate by hand, but i've heard no rattle on decel. i add the note because the first time i tightened it, i apparently tightened it too much. and i snapped the actuator rod after about three weeks.


but now i'm on week one of new actuator and everything seems fine. boost remains unchanged. hope this helps.

ha when i bought my car i had the same problem i tore it down tightened it up and it was great for about 6 months and so i did it again now it rattles and i really dont care its wayy to much work to tighten the danm thing
