2005 s4 vs m5 140 +mph

So.... I was driving back to Chicago from Davenport Iowa and I was on a long stretch of Interstate 88...A all black m5 pulls 2 lanes over from me and rides side by side...There were about 0 cars on the road except for us. I was with one of my business associates and he said "I think this guy wants to race." It just looked like a 5 series to me, and I am always game, so I let it go. He hung right with me until about 135...I started to pull until about 145-150 at which time I had about 2 cars on him and let off the gas.

we pulled over at the oasis and talked. His car was ridiculously cool. He was pissed that he lost, but I have an exhaust, induction and I think a chip so maybe that was the difference. Anyways, the m5 was a monster...stock s4's beware.

ohh, he especially liked the sound of the milltek exhaust that I have. I bought my car already modified, so I do not know what version it is, but it does sound good. a little envy from the bmw guys never hurts.

Slow? Are you kidding? It might not take an m5, which weighs less, has more hp and rwd so more hp to the wheels, but these are still not slow cars.

Remember, an M5 was also an $80k car and one of the fastest sedans on the road.

I hate this mentality that the S4 is so damned slow because it cant take certain cars on the road. There is always something faster than you. The S4 is still faster than a huge percentage of cars on the road in its class. The S4 is plenty fast, even stock. 0-60 in under 5 1/2 seconds and 13 second 1/4 mile times are fast.

it wasnt the newest body style, the one before it...and believe me, he was in it. When we got to the oasis, he was shocked that I was able to pull on him. We were literally nose to nose from 70 - 130. I asked if he let off and he said after I started to pull.

It was a nice car, seemed really taken care of. You know, last time I posted my quarter mile time, I had people on the board calling bs too. maybe my s4 has something done to it that I don't know. I have owned a mustang cobra that ran 13.1 consistently and it seems just as fast.

anyways, all I know is that Iit was fun and he was impressed with the Audi.

and for the record, these cars are not slow...

Nice run.. but how do you know nothing about what was done to your car? I just find it a little strange to purchase a modified car and not wonder what the previous owner did to it. But that's just my opinion.

From what I understand stock E39 M5's are definitely faster top end than stock E46 M3's (which everyone knows will either beat or perhaps be even w/ a stock S4) so I find it hard to believe that the M5 lost to your S4 even if its modified. Hell, I've even seen a stock E39 M5 (my friend's) beat an RS4 to 140mph. *Shrug* too many things to be aware of in this race to figure out what happened but regardless good race.

I agree with "Race Shooter"...The S4 is be no means a slow car by any stretch.
Coming from owning two 911's and one 930 over the past years. The S4 has teeth and does about everything as well or better than its other German performance line cars when all factors are considered. The car is rock solid up past 160mph and does it all day without breaking a sweat. Considering most of us live in the States, ..the S4 is so untapped on what we can use of its performance it is ridicules.

When it arrived I noticed it was modified, but since it was in perfect condition and I took it to the audi dealer and the service record was clean (except for a power window regulator) I decided to just keep it. I know there is an air intake and exhaust, because when he had it on the rack, he said it was all different. I'm not sure of a chip because I do not know how to check.

I will say before I bought this car I test drove 2-3 stock s4's and this car feels a lot faster than they were, but its feeling not timed. In all, the point to my story was it happened and it was fun. the car is fast. believe what you want I was there and the bmw owner was pissed.

By no means are B6 S4's slow but they are not faster then M5's (E39's or E60's) even with a chip, exhaust and intake, sorry, there has to be more to the story. Peace

Well all the chips extend the rev limiter, so if it kicks in at 7200 it is stock, if it goes to 7500 you have a chip.

The E39 M5 must have had dinan downgrades then. My friend had a E39 M5 and tried all the stage 2 components and lost power, he couldnt get it even to spin the wheels in 3rd anymore. So he took the components back off. LOL! No way even a RS4 can beat a M5.

Not a mystery, some S4 make more power than other Dr.Mike ran a 13.3 with a full exhaust. So it is possible to run those times. I have been to the 1/4 mile a few times and ran a 13.8-14 but I only have a cat back and chip.

FYI: He raced the previous gen M5 (E39) not the E60.

Other factors to make the M5 "lose":

Bad plugs, clogged intake, bad/low octane gas, extra weight (but at those speeds not as relevant), tranny issues?

Good kill nonetheless. Stuff happens all the time especially in the street. You probably do have somewhat of a factory beast too. You should post pics of your car - maybe the original owner will chime in.

Either way the numbers don't add up. If your car was fast enough to keep up with an m5 you should notice it. Running 13's is not m5 worthy, sorry.

I did beat him
Maybe he couldn't drive (but we were going straight)
