Pros: Less power loss from transfer.
Cons: May reduce drivability off-line as chatter may occur.

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

Reduced mass equals better response and acceleration, primarily in the lower gears.

An aluminum flywheel works particularly well with turbo cars because it reduces lag, although a K03 S4 doesn't have much to begin with!

For the record, the Fidanza aluminum flywheel is 12lbs 4.8oz whereas the stocker is a massive 28lbs 0.6oz!

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

I don't know a whole lot of about flywheels, other then the fact i just bought one. But alot of guys i have talked to say they like the stock one better. Im not sure on all the reasons why, i just know alot of people like stock. Only reason i can think of is the revs don't drop as fast between shifts. But to be honest, i think the s4 revs pretty quick compared to alot of cars. Like someone said, there is no lag with s4s.

i would just keep your stocker and have it resurfaced, thatll shave a little rotational mass off of it and its cheaper.. flywheels are expensive, i wouldnt get a new one unless you had to

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

I've been told by numerous German auto guys that it is a BAD idea to resurface the stock flywheel. I have a LWFW, and LOVE IT. Yes, there is a bit of chatter, but you learn to ignore in and shift better to avoid it. My revs are infinitely quicker in the lower gears, and make for much quicker low gear pulls and minimal to no bogging.

Also, eventhough the revs drop down quicker between shifts, we all know how to shift well enough to not make this an issue. Being as such, a LWFW becomes even better if you are one (like me) who doesn't like to shift past 6K RPM's. It eliminates the need to pull early gears to 7K to allow for a better Rev range. With a LWFW, it is a lot quicker to go from 4500K to 6K.

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

i like the stock one better... main reason, drivability.... no chatter..... lighweight isnt bad, but then again, ive never owned a car w/ a LWFW.... the stock one works awesome, grabs, well, and does the job

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

It's not that the stocker is bad ... it's just that to me, the LWFW is better. But, it's personal opinion. I drive my car about 300 a week to and from work. Sometimes stuck in traffic. The chatter was annoying for about a week, and now I couldn't be happier with my decision. It really is a personal preference. I have had my parents, friends, girlfriend and co-workers in my car, and only twice have I gotten comments about the chatter. Both times were from co-workers who owned faster cars. They were commenting that they loved the chatter because it connotes a person who knows what they're doing with cars :)

    Re: Benefits of Lightweight Flywheel

I have a Spec LWFW. I don't know about the others because I have only had this one. I have put about 12K miles on my car with the Spec Stage 2 clutch and LWFW, and have had ZERO problems, and wouldn't have gone any other way.
    --Adam

ps - The flywheel, i've been told, frees up a few (3-5) extra awhp.
