An Open Letter to those who celebrate Valentine's Day

    Dear Romantics,

Why specifically do you celebrate Valentine's Day? Do you do it because you want to? Do you do it because your gf expects it.. but you think its fun too? Do you do it because she expects it and its easier to comply than argue?

In terms of gifts.. do you just spend time together and enjoy each others company? Do you do dinner? Dinner and gift? Just gift? Whole extravaganza? Does she get YOU gifts? Does she pay for dinner? Does she send you flowers? Its the $$ expenditure equal? Do you care if its equal?

Are you a generally romantic person? Do you surprise her randomly even when its not Valentines? Does she randomly do romantic things for you?

I'm honestly trying to understand here. I've yet to meet ONE PERSON - male or female - who truly enjoys Valentines. I have met many many people who groan and roll their eyes about it. It almost seems like people celebrate because they think they need to.. and don't want to piss off the other party.. but no one actually wants to participate in the day.

So for those of you who celebrate and ENJOY it.. why? I'm really curious here. For you negative people - stay out. We know you hate the day. I don't need to hear about it again.

    Love,

    Stefanie michelle

My problem is that I feel the aspect of valentines is great but the problem is that it is too much commercialized. I feel that the aspect of valentines day should be celebrated everyday.

personally if i'm with someone who i like, or am into, then i'd be doing valentines day cause it could be fun. i have been lucky enough to meet someone who, pretty much no matter what, we have a good time. valentines would just be a fun way to be goofy/dressed up, etc. too bad she's got a boyfriend, huh?

hahaha I like that. Well my problem is that my ex was anti-valentines day and broke up with me. I later found out that night she hooked up with her longtime ex and basically she was/is a slut.

I found somebody worth spending 50 bucks on. :)

Re: An Open Letter to those who celebrate Valentine's Day

You can ask that of any holiday. Why do I celebrate St Patricks day when I can easily get tore up any ole day?
I guess with VDay, it's a celebration of romance? Love? I don't think you HAVE to be with someone to celebrate that.
That being said, I see no reason to go overboard. Have a nice dinner, maybe do something special, but don't kill yourself trying to create the perfect VDay experience.

Re: An Open Letter to those who celebrate Valentine's Day

I think they use it as a way to get their girlfriends that withhold sex to have sex with them. Theres really no other explanation. It's either you're sexually deprived or you're a sex addict. Girls.. they are stupid and like to be spoiled and know that they will be, then they complain that their boyfriend didn't meet their v-day expectations. Hell breaks loose on V-day if boys don't cooperate.

And St. Patty's day is celebrating our lovely irish people and conquering the world by avoiding being pinched, so, no, it's not the same.

edit: sorry I broke your rule Stef, haha.

Well, obviously they're not the same. She asked why you celebrate Vday. I was simply saying that can be asked of any holiday when it boils down to it. Why do we buy gifts for Xmas? Why do we hide eggs for Easter. It's yet another holiday that's there to celebrate something. Has it become overcommercialized? Sure, as has Xmas...which is why I just refuse to give gifts for any holiday (aside from my son)
I've already told my gf that she's not getting anything. She feels the same way.

Re: An Open Letter to those who celebrate Valentine's Day

Vday is just another way this country can milk money from you, and a way wives can feel special from their hubbies to notice them more than they want.

some girls are all about it, about being pampered, etc but won't return the favor not even on the guy's bday. some don't care for it at all.

i love the fact that my honey told me not to get her anything, all we are doing is getting together at my place and cooking, spending time all night. we love that stuff. only thing she doesn't know is i ordered flowers to be delivered to her house via pro-flowers last week as a lil surprise to her

but yeah, in general valentine's day sucks. i hate the guys who go to the extreme showboating on what they are doing for their girls on Vday but won't even pay an ounce of attention to her any other day

Yes, it can be asked of any holiday. The difference is, most people I encounter seem VERY reluctant to celebrate Valentines. They do it out of obligation.. not because they want to. I'm trying to figure out if there is anyone out there who DOES want to celebrate and if so, what is the appeal to them. Neither you nor your gf want to celebrate.. thus you don't. Thats great. It makes sense. Now what about those people who DONT want to celebrate.. yet are? What's up with that?

Christmas is Happy Presents Day in my family. We are not religious in the slightest. We're good with celebrating Happy Presents Day.. and so continue to celebrate we shall.
