which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey,

    There's two 3" resonators that I found.

    A bottle style one

    BottleStyle

    And a Ultra Quiet one.

Ultra Quiet type big one ...

I have a Thermal R&D Street Exhaust and I wanted to get rid of some of the drone at the 2,900rpm mark.

Think the Bottle style one will remove enough of the drone .. or should I go with a quieter one ... I wonder if the quieter one will be too quiet and restrictive.

The attraction of the bottle style one is that it's very low profile and it's only 12" short so it would fit well, the other one would have to be inserted somewhat sideways so it doesn't hang too low.

If anyone has used one ... i'd love some feedback.

    thanks ...

You want use the largest resonator possible with the same ID piping.

Do you mean lenght wise or width? The bottle ones are cool ... cause they would fit nicely tucked in there. The big ones would be a low hanging fruit to smack on things.

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

My installer selected a couple of large oval Magnaflow units when I was looking into doing this fix. In terms of size the smallest one I saw was bigger than either of your units pictured.

How he was going to insert it in after the downpipe I have no idea.

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

i was told i have two options .. the easiest one is to put the resonator in between the down pipe and midpipe ... only downside of this is that it's all welded toghether ... so if I havea dp issue and needs changing i need to get it welded in.

If i got the bottle on .. it's 12" which would fit in the second straight section ...

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

Use a 2.5" "bottle style" resonator (longer then 12" if you can find it). Have your installer weld it onto the DP before it connects to the midpipe. Flange the output from resonator, flange the midpipe, have a party.

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

yah, use long bottle style. I dont know how the Thermal exhaust pipes look underneath. but here's a sample of my Magna setup.

The ultra-quiet style one you linked above, can be considered a mid-muffler.

Bottle styles, are for the most part, just glass packs.

    Definitely get it flanged.

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

Have the resonator flanged and have the piece of pipe he plans to cut out flanged as well so you can put the exhaust back to the way it was if you want to in the future.

Theres a slip joint style connection between the DP and midpipe, the DP is 2.5" the whole way and slides into the midpipe (which is 3").

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

Ah .. actually mine is different ... it's a 2.5" downpipe going into the flex joint after which it's 3" right away .. going to a flange going to the 3" midpipe.

    http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...80ce7d90cb3f52

I'm going to go for this one ... i can weld this 18" resonator in there.

    3" x 18" by 4"thick.

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

I've ended up ordering this guy here ... it's on back order so I think it will take me about 4 weeks to get ...

But I think it's the best choice for sound dampening.

Backordered on exhaust parts will be longer than 4 weeks... Try 4 months... They will string you along

Nice pit!! I'm building a new home in a few years and I'll be looking into the same thing and/or a lift possibly. Either one is great to have

Re: which resonator to fix Thermal R&D Drone

Apparently it's not backorder but it's a special order. The distributor doesn't have any in stock .. so they need to get a special order from Magnaflow ... the place here said 3-4weeks is about standard .. so let's hope it's not worse.

If it's that bad .. i can always go with a dynomax one ... i tjust thought this one looks a bit more sound proofy .. the dynomax was a race resonator ... thought this might be quieter and its' stainless.

    I would try

JC Whitney. They carry a lot of resonators.

    Sorry

didn't know what I was thinking.
    I mean summit racing

no luck didn't find anything there .. i guess i can just wait ...the dynomax ones were available right away but, it was a race series so i thought this might be quieter .. and the length sucked ... the body was 12" versus the 14" on this one .. figured the longer the better.
