What would you do? A4 or A8?

So i have been at my local dealer a lot lately and been browsing ebay and there are some 2005 a8s for real good deals. I mean right around 40k with 30k miles or so. The a4 is nice, but it is almost getting too small for me. My lease ends next year so it makes me think, keep modding or just buy an a8 next year, drop it and throw some 20s/21s on it?

the only reason i wouldn't buy an a8 is not many mid 20 year olds drive large sedans..

Not being 20, i tend to focus on cars that I like, not what "others" have/like etc. That being said, it's a touch difficult to add my .02 as i cant imagine dropping an A8 and putting 20s/21s etc on it. I mean, i can imagine it, but the mental picture isnt like any of the cars i have seen on AZ. Now could i imagine buying an early 90s 7 series BMW and putting a BT on it? Yes. You might get bored w/ the A8, just judging from the essay you used to have to list your mods. Good luck.

ya, i would go with more classy wheels that that. plus you can lower it with the vag-com or buy a module to lower it more.

I am almost bored with my car now. the only thing i could really do is add a bigger turbo kit, finish the stereo and add a body kit. The body kit would get destroyed in less than a year based on the roads/parking lot entrances and snow/salt/road debris.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the A8. If you don't mind driving a large, gas guzzling car, I say go for it. The size and the fact it has a V8 was the big deterrent that kept me from considering one.

Drive both. The decision will be easy. Interesting value observation.

The A8 is an ubersled, arguably as nice a car as any out there. The A4, while nice, is a pricepoint car, full of compromises.

I love both, but for the same price it's no contest.

That would be the next logical step. Get the 4.2 version and start modding it. drop it and put rims on it. In "two weeks", APR will have the supercharger for the S4 and who knows maybe they'll make one for the A6 too.

I dont know but the A8L is just too long for me.

My Mom has an 06 A8 L that I've driven for 1000s of miles, and I drove her 04 A8 L at least 10K alone. I drove the 06 for 300 miles last night in fact.

defunkt: I saw your A4 while I was driving the A8 two days ago (on vacation in Scottsdale). You were going down Scottsdale Rd past the Benz dealer and I was going the other way. The car looks great!

They are awesome rides. TONS of street presence. The steering is a touch too light IMO, but the suspension is nice and taut in dynamic mode. Better than an A4 S-Line. The interior just blows our B7s away, but it should at the money an A8 costs new.

I think it really depends on what you want. My A4, non-sport, is still more fun to drive as it is much more nimble. The A8 is a great handler, but it is still a big car no matter how you look at it.

As far as wheels go, the OEM multi-spokes are really the nicest wheels out there on A8s aside from maybe BBS LMs.

Just don't get an 04, whatever you do.

Looked at this today, really good prices on 06s (relatively speaking). V8+2 Turbos=Fun.

I'd love the A8 and S8 but after sitting in one I find that they are just too big of a car for my body size.

The A4 is perfect for me and if I had to upgrade I'd get an RS4 Avant.

IMO one of the stupidest things that Audi does, is not give us (US/Canada) access to the Avant versions. Its REALLY annoying, and the MB Uberwagen (E63) is two wheel drive. I am with you though, an RS4 Avant would be "The One".

my good friend rolls his A8L, its not the fun little car you maybe used to in the A4. The A8 is a freakin beast, classy, powerful and roomy. Very nice, but very different cars. I like them but just know you can't go zipping a darting as much with that ride. when i look to make the switch i'm gonna go either s4 or A8 depends how many speeding tickets i get till then. A8s are far cooler than the s class and 7 series. Quattro baby!

Ive seen a quartz A8 that was debaged, trunk spoiler, 22" (I think) and lowered driving pretty fast on the freeway...sickest audi ive ever seen. A8's look so clean when u drop them and put a nice set of rims on them...

Yea, i put several thousand miles on a Lexus LS a year and it is just a relaxing drive. I don't feel the need to be zipping all over the road. When i am in the a4, i feel the need to be smashing the gas all the time. The a8 would be great for highway runs.
Now i need to figure out if i should try to sell my car now, or wait till the lease is up.

2004 was the first year of the D3 A8, and many had lots of problems and glitches. My Mom's 2004 was lemoned because of all the issues it had, including a full transmission replacement at 8K and a sunroof motor which dug into the sunroof glass and shattered it while my parents were in the car. Lots of other issues too. The 06 has been relatively problem free.

WoW after all that your parents still bought an Audi, Im having a few issues that are making me never buy an Audi again.

Our service department is great, and they treat our family like gold and if we went somewhere else we wouldn't get anywhere as good service. And Audis are well-designed machines so we can put up with the problems for the driving experience.

My 06 B7 hasn't been much better than the 04 A8 though. LOTS of issues. I think it is a first model year Audi thing.

I practically live at the service department and I know WAY too much information about my service people lol. My lease is up soon though so I don't really care. I just hope my next B7 is relatively hassle-free like my parents' second A8.
