Is it safe to do a burnout?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was screwing around today with a buddy of mine in an empty lot near my house. I smoked my tires and afterwards my ABS light popped on, but when I turned my car on and off the light popped off. This was the first time I did it and I was wondering if holding the handbrake does any damage to ABS. I would appreciate a response because this is really fun (and I know its bad for the tires, but I'm getting new wheels soon)

what if you do donuts on wet pavement in an AWD Tiptronic? It's soooo fun. Only did it about 3 times, i haven't beat on my car since.

Point being, does wet pavement reduce the chances of damage?

    What about snow?

well snow would reduce the damage because the effort the car has to do in order to accomplish a donut in snow is far less then on a normal dry pavement... in dry pavement, altough you can do it for fun, it will harm your car

FWD or AWD if you can get your wheels to break traction easily then your not hurting anything at all but your tires.

If it takes some work or traction does not break then your gonna be stressing the hell out of your CV joints, drive shafts, center diff, 3rd member, etc...

Oh lord its the 400HPA4 vs A4 TSCHUSS battle again...

IMO they were both good attempts at "swangin" it. The only thing that caught my attention was the sound of 400HPA4's BOV or whatever hes using to keep that turbo spooled. The on/off throttle sound was just like "yeah im tearin' $hit up".

    To both...

David's and my car make about the same power, his is a little quicker than mine.

For some crazy reason, my car has always spooled hella quickly and you have to pedal the throttle quite a bit.

The fav thing about my video to me was that is was totally impovised, I flew to California from Germany, drove my car down to Eurocode from Nor*Cal to bring Gerard a few parts that were back ordered from ATP when they did his install kit.

Me, Drew, David and the guys were bullshittting around, it was the first time I had met David, Drew, and Charlie...

Gerard had been in the car with me when I was doing some smoky ass drifting so he knew the tires could break loose, so they pretty much challenged me into doing the donuts...I literally started the car, drove right into the street in front of Eurocode and let it rip...because of the camera angle you cannot see that there were about 5 Audis all lined up in the street, just waiting for me to broadside them...fortunately I was able to pull it off without a hitch.

    Fun Times!!

It seems as though this thread as turned into being about doughnuts, but I was talking about just a plain, ole' burnout. I did it in my FWD tip and it worked, but my ABS light popped on. Does anyone know why?

Not entirely sure, but your traction control is run through the abs system. You won't be damaging your abs by doing this. As most have posted, this will tear up stuff on your car, but you can get away with it for a long time.

I used to do big, smokey burnouts with my B5 Passat fwd, but I had to turn off the traction control. Maybe that's why your light popped on? Traction control didn't catch the wheelspin.

You're only going to damage stuff a few ways:

    1. A sudden gain in traction (destroys axles, diff, transmission, engine, etc) sends a shock down the driveline.
    2. Overrev (most likely will damage the engine).
    3. Losing control and smashing something.
    4. AWD or RWD using E-brake (will smoke the rear brakes (unless your E-brake uses a seperate caliper... then it will die)).
    5. Overheating fluids.
    6. Misshift.
    7. Vibration causes component failure.

Of course it's wear and tear on your vehicle (especially your tires).

I'll agree with Jeff, those donuts were weak (at least they looked fun).

When we were at Fontana Dragway one day, it began raining Charlie and I did some donuts for Feesh to film (unfortunately he did not film them.

My tires were spinning so damn fast my car just sat in one place spinning them and would not even move, as I started to turn when the car went backwards it just kept going backwards as the wheels were spinning...

But then again, anyone can do them on wet ground.

I know eacatly why... your front tires were spinning as the emergency brake was on...this is what happens in a VAG car, there is nothing wrong with your car, it is just the reaction to the sensors on the wheels input.

When you get a smog test or dyno a FWD car, this is the temporary end result.

    You're kidding right?!

Look at his hands in the video. They are all over the place. Good drivers don't look like they're at a rave when driving.

Correct, 10 and 2 with light hands just like the grip on a golf club...only taking the hands off the wheel to shift, then promptly replacing them, never going hand over hand.
