    VW 1.8T vs Audi 1.8T

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Are the 1.8T engines from a Jetta, Golf, or Passat the same as our 1.8Ts?
My buddies wife works for our local VW dealer and says they have some sludge motors sitting there. It would be a great chance to get a motor for a build up!

AFAIK it is the same engine but it is oriented in the engine bay differently.

They sit different in the engine bay and from what I've read they can't be used in our cars. The passat engine may fit though.

Same engine, but one is transversely mounted (front of engine is facing the side of the car) and the other (A4) is longitudinally (front of engine is facing the front of the car) mounted. As far as I know the engines are not direct swaps. Also for some reason the VW 1.8T's get 180hp and we get 170 along with the Passats that use 1.8T's. They could have just tuned us to get that mere 10 more hp...oh well.

anything can be done with enough blood and sweat, for instance:

a buddies of mines cabrio with a b5 aeb motor transverse mounted: (opposite of what you were askin) so yes you could swap a VW 1.8t into your b6

I'm not worried about the internals or tuning, just the physical engine. Is it the same as ours just the long block? Can a VW motor "Bolt In" an A4 with all the Audi accessories? I'm building it for a GT30.

It's not really VW vs. Audi, but the generation of engine. There are a lot of small differences going from cable to DBW engines. Everything from variable valve timing, to different port sizes, compression ratios, bearing tolerances, etc. Most of these were for emissions and fuel efficiency reasons.

I haven't done a swap like this, but I would guess that as long as you stay DBW to DBW or NDBW to NDBW, you should be OK.

Same engine code from B5 Passat to B5 A4 is fine.
However, with B6 it would be hard
    B5 passats/A4s used:
    AEB, ATW, AWM
    B6 A4:
    AMB

Without matching engine codes, there a lot of work that needs to be done. They might fit, but there's a lot of ECU work you'd need to do.

    BTW
    B5 Passat/all A4s: Longitudinal
All other VWs with 1.8T/Audi TT: Transverse

    I agree.
Its a big swap which would need a lot of custom work.
Worth it for a car without the engine availble, but you'd likely save a lot of money or time buying a used B6 engine.

If you want a cheap built motor swap, your best bet would be to get a 225TT AMU block. The AMU shares the same rods as ours which is the weakest point of our motor and something you would want to upgrade, second weakest point in our motor is the 19mm wrist pins. The AMU already comes with 20mm wrist pins and the stock pistons are also forged in the AMU. With the pistons already being forged and ready to accept aftermarket rods with 20mm wrist pins, itll save you some money from having to have the block honed to match the forged pistons. The stock forged AMU pistons are good for 500+ hp so that isnt an issue.

So if your looking for a cheap built motor, grab an AMU, buy some Pauter rods swap the rods into the block and drop it into your car with all the parts off your current motor!

The only BIG difference between the VW and Audi 1.8T's is the fuel system. The VW's run a fuel return system with a fuel pressure regulator. The Audi fuel system is returnless and lacks a FPR!

use the older motors from audi since they didn't start using immobilizer until the b6 in america (B5 s4, b5 a4 all have no immobilizer).

if you don't want DBW agony then just step back to 1999.5 audi a4 and you will have cable throttle and no immobilizer.

    even better some may say

All I care about is the block and head. Are they the same as Audi? Will the VW motor bolt up to our trannies? Can I build a VW motor and swap all my Audi parts on to it, such as a/c compressor, alternator, etc? Let me put it this way. Can I go buy a new DBW VW longblock from a VW dealer thats for a Jetta etc. and swap my Audi parts on it and install it in my car as if it were a longblock from Audi? Maybe I should call both dealers parts dept. and see if the part #s are the same.

Most of these varations are very different.
Putting a Jetta engine into a b6 wuld require massive fabbing.
Also note that even among B5's parts and belts ae different. For example on some b5 1.8Ts, the water pump is on its own belt. On others, the water pump is on the TB.
Also note that the reason that B5/B6s have sludge is the small oil pan needed to get the engine to fit in the engine bay. The Jetta/Golf has a larger oil pan that would make fit very very hard. There's a reason VW used a different oil pan size.
