Now that the chip crisis is gone, the used market seems to be self correcting back down to where prices should have been.


Some cars seem to be holding a perceived value still though.

In the long term I see prices on cars in good shape (especially with lower mileage) going up... More and more people wake up every day to how absolutely terrible the mid 2010's+ vehicles are. The amount of chinese electronics in cars absolutely skyrocketed in the late 2010's and this occurred at the same time that OEM's and Tier 1's became really good at actually hitting the 7-10 year lifespan for many components (instead of accidentally making cars that easily went 200k miles/20 years.... That was never anything but an accident). If this EV dementia continues we will see at a minimum a continued (if not increasing) demand for older (repairable) vehicles, with a dwindling supply of those vehicles... Combine this with inflation and I don't see how the prices can go anywhere but up. You should see what people are bringing into shops the past 2 years or so - Cars that have been sitting in the back yard for years are getting dragged in for thousands in repair after people find out that the repair cost for a single item like transmission or computer failure will cost 2-3x what it costs to completely refurbish the old car out back, so they dump the newer car and go back to the old one!

It looks like it was likely serviced at a couple different Audi dealers in the area, hard to say what was done from the car report other than PERFORMED RECOMMENDED SERVICE.

It shows listed 10 days ago and has already dropped $1600, I expect it should drop more but timing to others looking will be key.

I honestly think looking at cars that are past OEM warranty at a dealer is a mistake. My observation is that people who buy in that mileage/age range have about the same experience whether they buy from a private party or the dealer (as long as they do the correct homework - records, make sure the carfax mileage progression makes sense, etc) - It doesn't matter how old nor new you always overpay and the dealer and nowadays dealer service is no better than independent euro shop service in nearly all cases.

One thing I would strongly consider with these newer platforms, especially the 4.0T cars, is the scheduled maintenance cost. If you do this maintenance yourself, you will save a ton of money, but if you are planning on paying someone to do it, it's going to rake your wallet over the coals... To me, this is yet another reason to make absolutely certain you are not overpaying for the car unless you have money to burn and you just don't care. Rear dif fluids, DSG fluids, spark plugs, carbon cleaning, own it long enough and you will definitely put an oil separator on it.
I love the DL501 but that trasnsmission has a significantly higher chance of requiring rather expensive maintenance/repair than the ZF8.
If you buy higher mileage without proof of this maintenance being performed you are at higher risk of issues in the short term.
I went and found the cheapest S6 with desired options that I could, which was due for all of this maintenance and the seller knew it. It also had a half-failed headlight, the brake lights both had the intermittent electrical failures, and the secondary oil temperature sensor had failed for no particular reason. This brought the price down quite a bit. A situation like this is only beneficial if you plan on doing your own maintenance, though.

As far as prices, just like the housing market the car market has transitioned from "what is it worth" to "what will someone pay". People were over-paying for brand new cars at the dealer not that long ago during the "shortage", I know more than one person who had pre-ordered a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup before the shortage, and after it arrived they were offered $20k or greater in cash to walk away from the deal so that the dealer could sell the vehicle to someone else for even more than that extra $20k. There has always been a bit of irrationality assigned to used car prices but if you really want to see some wildness just go look at sales history on BringATrailer..... Didn't some guy buy a C6 S6, swap the drivetrain into his C6 avant and sell it on there for over 50 grand? xD

I look at in a sense of "what's the best hardware I can buy within this price category?" For up to $45K, there's not much in the sense of German twin turbo V8 sedans, save maybe a newer BMW M550i. Clean, low-mile, RS7s are still $60+, and in stock trim, still outperforms the C8 RS7. The upper limit of pricing starts testing other categories, like a late C7 GrandSport, all the varieties of Mustang (except a GT500), and starts crossing over into the territory of a better performing, deeper-depreciated EV (Model S, Taycan RWD).

I'm considering the sale of my 2018 S6 this year and afraid of the bath I'll have to take on this car, selling it as is. Parting it out will be an equal pain in the ass, so I'm hoping it goes to someone willing to pay a premium for a super clean example, with Akrapovic and Carbon Ceramics.

38k on the odometer, newly-applied XPEL PPF (this is its second application) and Opti-Pro ceramic, only garaged. As it sits, I'd like $45K for it but will offer choice(s) of wheels/tires, steering wheels, and a ton of extra parts. It will be quite a deal over buying an equivalent-spec RS7.

I agree anything we invest in our cars does not increase the value of the car only decrease it cause there is a market for people looking for cars with mods and there are people who just want an OEM non-modified car to buy and enjoy driving.

Damn that sounds like a bunch of nice options. Ive only seen one that was blue with the same options as you and he was asking $78K CDN($55K USD) with slightly higher mileage.
