Does anyone run Yakima or Thule crossbars? Curious on your model, if you needed footings and if the moonroof still operates fully. 2019 SQ5

I have the Audi ones. They work great. Moonroof opens no problem

I’ve got Thule wingbad evo and they work great, not sure about the overall noise level vs the oem ones. The Thule website also has all the needed parts, and there’s no limitation to the sunroof opening at all.

That’s good to know. I might eventually get a set of those because they are lower profile than the OE bars but I wondered if they would impede the sunroof opening.

Looked at Yakima's system and was a hard pass aesthetically for me. I use the black Wingbar Evo setup with the lower profile Evo Flush Rail Towers so everything sits much lower than the OEM bar and if you use the t-slot for mounting your accessories everything will sit as low as possible. Much more versatile than the Wingbar Edge system which I find is too narrow to carry much other than one roofbox, or a single snowboard or kayak carrier or a couple of bike carriers. Also because it's not fixed like the OEMs bars you can mount the bars forward a little so that whatever you mount is more level with the roof line instead of pointing slightly skywards. Your retailer will probably recommend you use same length crossbars on front and back to maximize carrying capacity but I chose the 47in bars for the front and the 43in bars in the back for a more streamlined look. Roof width of SQ5 tapers towards back so the 47in bars overhung a little too much for my liking.

As for the sunroof...I have zero issues with it fully opening. One thing to note is that I use the AirScreen XT L wind deflector as well and if you plan on installing that you'll need to position the front bar far forward enough so that the little feet of the AirScreen is off the sunroof glass otherwise it does interfere with the sunroof wind deflector and with it closing. Kinda like the auto pinch safety feature on the side windows. Wind noise wasn't bad to my ears and the AirScreen does help but I always have music playing anyways so is irrelevant to me.

The main reason I haven’t switched from the OE crossbars is because I don’t leave them on and the guide pins they use means it’s super fast to put them back on. No measuring or adjusting needed, they can only go on in one position.

Every other car I had an aftermarket roof system on (always Thule) I just left the rack on, it never came off. Removing and reinstalling aftermarket feet and crossbars means having to spend the time measuring to get it right every time.

If anyone is interested in by Thule wing bar evo I’d sell them - been considering upgrading to the wing bar edge.

Check amazon.co.uk for thule's, they're a lot cheaper if you get them from europe. I got wingbar evo's for $350 with prime shipping, was about a week international. the full kit, flush rails, fit kit, and bars.

Does anyone have photos of the Thule Wingbar Edge installed? Not a lot of info out there about them on the B9 platform (or at least what I could find).

Unfortunately the only pictures I’ve seen of them are on RS6s and Macans. Check out socalmacan on IG.

Appreciate the heads up - checked out his Macan and Q5. They sit a little higher than I imagined, but still have a nice lower profile compared to OEM.
Decisions...

evo’s sit lower. honestly if they were any lower I wouldn’t be able to open my sunroof. if you’re running a roof box you honestly might want the edge to keep that wind noise a tiny bit further away

Have not really looked at those but might now.
Ill only be using the kayak/paddle board racks mounted to the crossbars. Liked the look of the edge because of the more mounting, but not opposed to checking out other options.

found some old pics, I haven’t had these racks on in a year or two but this should give you an idea of how they sit. I also went one size down on the bars (118cm I think vs the 127mm recommended) and they fit but the front one is a bit of a stretch. I wanted the look of the edge but I don’t think they were out yet when I bought these. I believe I had to move the front one back about an inch more than the manual recommended since it was too wide at the front for the shorter bar, but they taper as they go toward the back of the car.

Appreciate you digging these up. Definitely along the idea of what Id be looking to accomplish. Which bike carrier did you use?

ideally a 127 bar up front and 118 in the back would be the way to go, but they usually sell in pairs. Yakima Forklift since it’s the only thing that can fit bikes with a wheelbase over 50” (barely)

I mainly use my oneup hitch rack now. the forklift stays on my A4.

Appreciate your input and advise. Really helpful and its great to hear from others on their experiences since not a lot of info out there right now. Feel like a total newb again haha.
