View Full Version : Stuttering/shuddering? Feeling when accelerating from a turn

2019 Audi Q5 with 40k miles

Just purchased at the beginning of May. Immediately noticed what feels like a “jumping” or something of the sort from the rear of the vehicle when accelerating hard while turning from a dead stop. It does not happen when accelerating hard in a straight line from a dead stop, which leads me to believe it is something with the drivetrain/rear differential/AWD system.

Brought it back to the Audi dealer where it was purchased because it still has a few months of warranty. They supposedly did the 50k service, oil change, transmission service, and put two new tires on the rear to match the tread depth of the front.

When we brought it in we told them it felt like there was an issue with the rear differential and explained the above.

Is this normal with these models? Something with the AWD system? I know it’s hard to know what I’m describing without sitting in or driving the vehicle..

I’ve owned 3 different Audis before this one, but they were all sedans (b7 A4, and two C7.5 A6s). I’ve also driven a 2023 A4 pretty hard when we had it as a loaner when the Q5 was just getting serviced for a couple days. I haven’t felt what I’m describing about the Q5 before in any of the other Audis.

Any help or additional questions to help me sus out what’s going on here will be greatly appreciated!

Only the SQ5 has a rear differential in the sport package. The Q5 doesn't. You sure the rims aren't bent? Maybe something loose in the rear? Swaybar, any of the suspension components.

Funny that the dealership didn’t mention that when we said that to them, lol.

I admittedly don’t know much about the Q series. I just assumed it had one because I changed the top and bottom mount bushings on the rear differential in my A6 that I drove before this Q.

I can try to check some of those components..

I believe you mean only the sq5 has the Limited Slip differential.

if the q5 didn't have a differential the wheels couldn't turn at different speeds which would make turning very difficult.

This with traction control on or off (holding it down until fully off)

Try doing it with both settings and see if you notice a difference between the two.

I tried with TC off but I didn’t hold it - but I’m pretty sure it turned off, unless there’s an “off off” mode by holding it as opposed to just clicking the switch

That was my initial thought, that maybe it was the car handling the power distribution to avoid slippage because it almost does feel like a more intense version of that..

But yeah it does do it with TC switched off

There are two stages of TC OFF

first one when you click it

second when you hold it down for like 5 seconds

There's a TSB for this: https://www.tsbsearch.com/Audi/39-21-43

In short, the fix is a fluid flush (and lots of it) and possibly a clutch replacement. The search says it covers the B9 Q5 but the actual *.pdf does not mention the Q5. It is hoped you're still under warranty. I'd call the dealer to see if the TSB applies.

My SQ5 does this sometimes, but only a bit - just like an old school hot rod with a limited slip diff. No TSBs I'm aware of and never any CELs or DTCs.

Thank you! I did test with both stages of TC/ESC off and it might seem less noticeable with TC fully off? Can’t really tell - still there though, even if just more minuscule..noticeable..

We sent the TSB to our contact at the dealer service dept. and we have an upcoming appt.

Will report back.

+1 on the TSB. I had this exact problem after 18 months of owning the car. The fluid flush helped at first but the issue came back a few months later. The dealer replaced AWD clutch at the rear of the transmission which cured this permanently. It is ridiculously expensive to do so get it sorted under warranty!

Thanks KGB.

We just got the car back. They changed the clutch fluid and the issue appears to be gone. They said if it comes back to bring it back and they’ll replace the clutch.

Due to what you’ve said it sounds like they should have replaced the clutch anyways. There’s no way they haven’t seen this before, right? You would think they’d jump at the opportunity considering Audi is reimbursing them for the work… I would like to get it back in before our warranty is up if the clutch is going to need changed regardless. We have about 6 months of warranty left.

Attached is the service department doc.

i noticed this on my car as well

23 Q5

it stutters and feels like the car will turn off. (almost like your stalling a manual transmission car)

I cannot remember if it only happens on turns etc.

I will say it's incredible how much differently the car drives now that the quattro system is behaving "as it should" (knock on glass save my a$$)

It corners, turns from a dead stop, handles like what I expect from an Audi now, whereas before I was like.. "Is this how the Q Series drive?".

Very satisfied with the improvement, but as noted in the service receipt "metal shavings" were found in the fluid when they changed it.
In my humble (and mostly uneducated) opinion, if I saw metal shavings in the clutch fluid, I would change the clutch.

I would recommend looking into the TSB linked above by - gocougs1234
