I couldn't find any threads or information about what are the exact requirements for video files on the MIB3.
The manual says mp4 (x264) is accepted and lists audio codecs that are allowed. It says the max resolution is 1080p but my research shows the screen itself may be 1540x720.
When I created some 1080p files they showed up but were grayed out and not readable by the system. They had other aspects like 30fps, 5.1 audio, etc. I tried changing things until I got it working and with the best quality I need.
I'm only playing live concert videos to listen to while passengers watch, so audio is most important to me.
Known working settings:
Encoding in Handbrake
1272x720 (because of source size, otherwise I would try to get 1280x720 or close to it depending on the source) I keep the PAR (pixel aspect ratio?) as close as I can to 1:1
Container: MP4
Codec: H.264
Framerate 23.976 (constant)
Quality: Avg Bitrate 3000
Audio codec: AAC (avcodec)
Audio bitrate: 320
Mixdown: Stereo
Note: At 1540x720 the aspect ratio is 2.139:1, a little less wide than 2.39:1 anamorphic widescreen.
So for movies that are 1.85:1 or 16:9 (and all others really) you would want to make your video the full height of the screen (720 pixels) and you will end up with a video that doesn't take up the full width of the screen.
I'm using a PNY 256GB Elite-X fit usb drive, inserted under the dash (next to the cigarette lighter). It doesn't stick out far so I'm not worried about bumping it and bending the USB port. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KCXTZT1?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Also, I should have pointed out that by default Audi turns off the screen when you start moving. This is called VIM (Video In Motion) for MIB3 and it needs to be allowed using an OBDeleven. So there is a cost to get this to work, you need to buy the device and buy 100 credits for the app to run.
