Hello Audizine,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a small problem I'm trying to solve.

I'm trying to replace the old battery on my Audi, which died recently. (I left it stationary for many months, and was listening to loud music without engine on[:d])

I bought a new VARTA AGM battery which is basically the same as the old one in terms of brand, power, Amp-hours, etc.

I have OBD eleven setup and need to recode the new batt but it didn't come with a BEM code on it.

Any bright ideas on what to do?

I was thinking about just changing one of the numbers in the serial, which I have seen people mention in forums.
Also - can't seem to find any codes online, which is what some have advised.
Tried calling VARTA - no answer from them yet.

This is the battery...

Varta H15 105Ah 950A

Thanks,

G

If you search i posted a pic in the forums of my old bems code as my new varta did not have a bems label either (audi techs read the qr code for the bems id now). You could try reading the qr code with with your phone or just change the serial # in vcds if it is the same amp hr as the original, or search the dozens of threads inthis forum on the battery that have pics of peoples bems codes.

What PR code for the starter battery is shown on the vehicle information sticker -- J0P (AGM) or J0Z (conventional) ? My guess is it should be J0Z for your B8 Avant. But if an AGM is installed, confirm part number 000-915-105-CF for the battery registration and change the serial number by a one or more characters. As @bb-tt notes, if your new Varta has a QR code sticker, it is possible that the BEM info is encoded in the code. H15 is not a battery size like H7, H8, H9. It's a Varta short code. Varta should be shot for using batteries identifiers that mimic real battery specifications.
https://www.varta-automotive.com/en-be/battery-finder?battery_code=h15&find=find

Anyway, it's a 000 915 105 CF from a coding perspective, so set the battery part number correctly and set the serial number to whatever.

Thanks to all the messages on this! I managed to fix it last night and it all went rather smoothly.

Smac770 - indeed, very annoying that they giving names that are misleading.

Added the part no, changed one of the digits on the last serial number part and it gave me the green tick.

Here is a screenshot below for anyone else who may be attempting this in the future.

So let me ask a dumb question... When you change the battery, you have to program the car with the new one? Help me understand.

apparently the car has different charging profiles depending on age and type of battery . so as the battery ages it charges differently. There is different opinions on whether it really makes a difference. maybe it makes the battery last longer ? who knows. I have many friends that have changed the batteries on these cars and it made zero difference and i did too and no difference. But there are people who insist on it and you are commiting sacrilege to the Audi Gods if you dont do it.

i think someone had a component fail once on there car and it got blamed on not reprogramming for battery..

Everyone makes their own choices

there was a heated battle over this once and the mod had to come in and shut it down ... and when he did, even he said he swapped his battery with zero issues .. and he got the last word lol.

And then there's this from the Electrical Equipment repair manual: "If replacing the battery, then the new battery must be adapted using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester." (p 13, Edition 02.2016).

I used my old ECS-branded Foxwell NT510 (VAG edition) handheld to do this battery registration when I replaced the original conventional H9 in our '14 a few years ago. --g
