I have a 2019 A6 Prestige, recently bought used. How do I update the maps in the nav system? Owners manual says enable auto map update. I did. Not helpful. Does it require internet access via Audi Connect? Or just an internet/wifi connection? I own a condo, so accessing my home network will not work. Maybe using hotspot on phone? I use Google Maps in Apple Car play, which is up to date, but thought it might be good to have the in car nav available as well, as I believe it projects nav directions in the HUD.

My 2019 A7 updates automatically. I get notices on the upper screen frequently. I says map updating and then gives a complete message before disappearing. There may be a setting somewhere for automatic updates.

I recently purchased a 2021 RS7. I set up the key user but I haven’t purchased, and I’m not going to purchase, an Audi connect subscription because I just don’t need the Google maps, traffic information, etc. I also have no clue how to update the maps. It’s supposed to have over the air updates capability, but I’ve never seen anything pop up on the screen for an update. I’ve gone into the MMI settings and it says no updates are available. The MMI version in my car is 3385. Based upon my research online, version 3385 isn’t the most up-to-date version. I don’t know what to do. I guess make an appointment at the dealership?

I stopped getting map updates when my Audi Connect subscription expired after Audi stopped charging my card for renewal for some reason. Never called to figure it out. Don't miss any part of it whatsoever though.

It appears from the replies that those “automatic updates” does require an Audi Connect subscription . Pretty much what I expected. And I agree, not worth the money to get it.

I spent a long time on the phone yesterday and today with Audi customer service representatives. The answer is, at least for my 2021 RS7, that I must have an Audi Connect subscription to obtain automatic over the air map/system updates. The free six month trial has long expired (and I'm not the original owner; I bought the car used), so if I want to have my maps updated, I was told that I must purchase a paid Audi Connect subscription. Even with the automatic updates button turned on in my MMI, my car will not automatically update without an Audi Connect subscription.

So, today I paid $365 for a one year subscription. I could have instead paid $36 per month, but that turns out to be $432 a year, so I just paid for a full year. I now have more options on my Audi phone app, and of course now my car will now show me weather, traffic, and news because of the subscription. I just went out to my car and, not surprisingly, a box popped up on my screen stating that the car was downloading a map update. It took approximately 20 minutes (I didn't really keep track), and it downloaded successfully. I now am able to turn on the Google Earth maps, which I couldn't previously turn on because I didn't have an Audi Connect subscription (the button was grayed out). I'm happy overall, but it does suck that I paid so much for this car and now I have to continue to pay more to get map updates. Also, it sucks that my street, which was created in 2018, still isn't identified by name on the maps. The street itself shows up, but not the name of the street, so I can't program my home address into my favorites. I'd think that since my street has now been in existence for four years, the street name should show up by now. On the other hand, my 2021 Genesis G90 that I got rid of in August of this year, which also had automatic over the air updates, didn't have my street name on the map, either, although the street itself showed up. One strange observation: my home address/street pulls up just fine on my Audi phone app, but it won't pull up in my car in the nav search. Weird.

Finally, I was told that the dealership "should" be able to update my maps without me purchasing an Audi Connect subscription. But there's no doubt in my mind that the dealership will charge at least a couple hundred dollars, and then I'd have to take it back later anyway and pay again, so it makes more sense for me to have an Audi Connect subscription so that my car automatically updates instead of me having to take it to the dealership every year or so. I hope this post helps someone. I spent a LOT of time simply trying to find out how my car's maps can be updated.

sbchurch23: Do you have an Audi Connect subscription?

No. I tried to get signed up for Audi Connect when I bought the car and only then discovered that it was a Canadian Market car and cannot get Audi Connect in the USA. The main reason the I was interested in it was for traffic info. Something that is very useful in the Atlanta area or on the interstate. The other features fell into the Nice-To-Have category. The $600/year was also a deterent. After I got my Apple Car Play working, I don't use the Audi navigation. I will try to catch a screen shot of the maps updating screen.

Yes I also never use the factory navigation as it never seems to get it right.

esdrs7, I went ahead and did the same. Contacted AudiConnect, bought a 6 month subscription for $199. The guy on the phone said give it about 20-30 minutes, maps will update along with the added features. The added features are there. The maps still seem outdated. There is a new beltway that runs by my condos. I use it every morning to go to work. Is still shows as a dotted line “future 840”. On the satellite map, you can see it, still under construction. It’s 2 years old. That’s Audi updated maps. Sad. The main reason I wanted this is so directions would display in the HUD. I had an appointment in Charlotte on Thursday. Used the Audi nav. I’ve been to this company before. It took me so far out of the way I almost was late. Thankfully I knew it was wrong, switched to Google maps in Car Play and was back on track and made my appointment with 1 minute to spare. I won’t use the Audi nav again.

Something has apparently changed in the MyAudi app. Logged in this morning and it wanted me to verify some info to enable new functions. As I was still waking up, will leave that for later so I can see what I’m doing.

Overall, wish I could get my $199 back.

Update. maps finally updated this weekend. A drop down message appeared on the MMI screen saying online map updates about to happen. A little icon showed up on the upper left corner of screen. After it completed, I tapped the icon, it listed map versions. Showed NC as a 2022 version, others all showed 2018 (I have a 2019- car???). Anyway, the new beltway I use to get to work now shows up. Woo Hoo! lol Wonder if other states will update as I travel? Anyway, will still use Google Maps in Apple Car Play.

From what I read it should work exactly like that, it will update the area you're in (whether it's a state or something smaller/bigger I'm not 100% sure) OTA but to get everything updated you have to download the update from myAudi onto a USB stick or SD card and apply it that way.

Thank you for the update! What do you mean by “NC”?

I can’t even find where to download map updates on the myAudi website. Just says do over the air updates but I’m not paying for a subscription.

It's under Features tab for me though that's me being in the UK, I've heard this might not exist in USA anymore for some reason.

Guessing North Carolina

Sorry, haven’t logged on in a while. Yes, North Carolina. Car has been in the shop all week, coolant leak. One of the two thermostats ( who knew?) failed in the closed position, preventing flow, damaged water pump and it started leaking. Fun. Anyway, as I was driving home, maps updated again, tho I can’t tell what. Will test the update in different states this week, driving up to Delaware.

Take a look at this Audiworld thread (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/audi-a5-s5-rs5-coupe-cabrio-b9-220/2021-map-update-available-until-feb-1st-3011336/) on updating maps. TLDR: OTA updates may or may not work depending on the year of the car, connect subscription, whether the car is past the free update period (applies to earlier cars). I've never been able to get our '19 RS5 to update OTA. The thread describes how to update maps for free. It's a little complicated and you have to be comfortable messing around with the engineering menus, SD cards, etc. I've yet to do this for our '19 RS5. Our RS6 is downloading map updates OTA so far...
