A4 B8 Starter ground to short/ECU problems? Error P305300

Am new here guys.

My Audi A4 has had a series of issues. First, it was a battery that went flat ever so often. Then the alternator dies. I changed that out, and on measuring the power, I realized there were voltage drops between the alternator and the jumpstart + terminal in the engine bay. From doing a little digging, I saw someone else had connected a cable running straight from the alternator to that + terminal, which I also did, and it resolved my problem. After that, though, my starter died, I changed that, and on removal, I noticed that the power cable was broken at the junction that connects it to the starter + terminal. The aluminum piece (that attaches the cable to the starter) fell off when I removed the starter, so I improvised and connected battery cables at each end of the broken wire to attach to the starter motor. I soldiered these attachments. Everything worked fine for a week, then suddenly, the car did not start until I got help roll/push and clutch starting it. I have since checked all the possible terminals and cleaned and reattached them. That seemed to help a little, and now I have very short-lived crunk. The power comes through the starter, but I wonder if I may have an ECU problem because it just kicks/cranks once and immediately cuts out. Also, I notice that when i take out the key after every crank fail and go back to the engine bay, it sounds like there is power running through the egr and different components in the engine. That runs for about 30seconds then goes off.

I have scanned the car and got the error P305300 (Starter activation, return message terminal 50 short circuit to ground/open circuit - Active/static)

There's two wires that go to the starter. The large cable from the TV22 block (the thing with the positive jump start post) that supplies the term 30 to the starter, and then daisy-chains on to the alternator term 30 output post. So this cable breaking down was your alternator voltage drop issue and then your starter no function issue.

Then there's the term 50 cable from the ECM. This is the cable that the ECM powers to get the starter invoked. 12v passes through the ECM controlled starter relays and then through the T5l plug and then on to the term 50 plug on the starter. The T5l plug is next to the TV22 block, just inside of the plenum chamber wall. The term 50 line is the larger wire on pin 1; the smaller wires are the alternator VR LIN line and the fan controller PWM line and such.

So it's unlikely an ECM issue, as all it does it control the starter relays. But the ECM does monitor that term 50 line for voltage presence (ie, voltage present means starter should be spinning). Is this a B8.0 or B8.5? B8.5 has a fuse on that line (all the fuses are in the ECM box).

I don't know if P3053 is normally indicative of a starter internal fault or not. It just seems to imply that the ECM isn't seeing 12v on the monitor of the starter relays output like it should? Maybe the starter relays are problematic. Diagram I made some time back:

That doc is for MY10-MY16 in that it references fuse 16 in driver's dash end, column black. MY09 only has 12 fuses in that column; for MY09, the power source is the battery direct, not a fused path. It forgets that the red/black to ECU T94/74 passes through fuse 9 in the ECM box as well, for B8.5.

Cleaned up the image, using an edit I already had. Just happens I apparently already made a footnote about the fuse in the event of P3053. So if this is a B8.5, I'd start by checking the fuse.

This is why it's always important to be up front with specifics. If you're asking an engine issue, make sure we unquestionably know what engine you're talking about. Which with an Audi, means knowing the engine code. So B8.5 2.0 TDI, but is it a CJC, a CGL, a CMF, a CMG, a CNH, or a CSU? Too many different TDI engines from Audi for one to remotely guess. I imagine the configuration is similar, but I'm not going to go through all of them to see if they are all the same as a 2.0T, the commonplace engine in this forum.

This one seems to detail some B8 TDI engine code location information for European market. That gray sticker under the hood is a foreign concept to me. But a photo of the PR codes sticker is always good to have accessible.

I'm more familiar with just looking on the engine itself, usually for a sticker on the timing cover. I checked the Engine bay last night and the information I got from the sticker on the timing cover is *CAG and the gray sticker says CAGA.

Sorry, I see I forgot to link the actual youtube video for my sentence. But appears you found the gray sticker it discussed. Ok, so CAGA. We see that was in your "Variant" string (ACAGAF1), but that manner of engine code presentation is foreign to me. So wasn't ready to rely on it.

With a CAGA EA189 Gen1 engine, that's going to be a B8.0 vehicle, not a B8.5. The engine has a power steering pump on it? Notice in this pic of a CAG engine, there is the alternator up high, the A/C compressor down low, and inbetween with the large pulley is the power steering pump. B8.5 don't have power steering pumps. https://autoblogcar.ru/uploads/posts/2020-04/1587562338_autoblogcar.ru_engvwcaga_0111.jpg That might be hard to see, people usually go by the radiator grill shape (trapezoid for B8.0, hex for B8.5).

Though the ECM pin numbers are different for a CAGA vs. a CAEB, arrangement is the same as I've already diagrammed.

You need to start with that T5l plug. Separate the plug and test the pin 1 on the ECM side for 12v presence when cranking the engine. The ECM expects to see 12v on that monitor line (the lower ECM pin in the diagram, pin 85 on your CAGA engine) attached to the output line going to the T5l plug. It sets the P3053 when it does not see the 12v. Maybe there's a problem with the line to the starter and it's grounding out, maybe there's a problem with the relays and 12v is not passing through the gates, etc. You need to factually confirm if the 12v is there are not. And if not, work your way back up the gate chain to see where the 12v stops appearing when it should.

@Smac770. Thank you for the tips on what to look for. I checked for the power at the T5l plug and found that voltage dropped at crank. I had recently changed my starter and apparently, the connection at terminal 50 was loose. I corrected that and now the car cranks like a charm.

Does this practice also apply to the 2011 B8 Audi 3.0l S4

I had to be towed home a few months ago.
Because I had stopped at the parts store for my other car
and the S4 would not start back up.
I checked the battery, and the fuses, no issues.
Some information said it could be the relay
So I changed the following starter relay labeled 643
part number 4H0951253A *I believe that this is the right part*
Also, this relay was located under the steering wheel.

I soon learned that there were three more under the cowling.
I switched out the known good one in each place.
No change.
No start no crank.

A few videos suggested that I disconnect the battery and do a reset.
NO change.

I finally pushed the car into the garage. That was Aug 2022.
It finally got cool enough to work in the garage and I charged the battery
and low and behold the car started. I moved the car outside, then turned the car
off and then back on and said great it started.

I put vag com on it and got this log.
I thought it worked itself out but I was wrong.
It would not start again but this time I got this log....

Does anyone have any previous experience with this or better yet a solution for this issue?
because a new ECU $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I don't want to through parts at a possible electrical issue.

Relay 643, now 645, is the larger cube. 645 is 4H0 951 253 A.
Relay 404, now 646, is the smaller half cube. 646 is 4H0 951 253 C.

There's no starter relay under the dash in front of the J519 (under dash below headlamp switch). That's the horn relay (back middle) and term 15 relay (back right). US B8.0 won't normally have any relays in the front row.

Starter relays are the two 404 or 646 together in the ECM box, under the hood, under the plenum chamber cover, below the washer fluid filler neck. The pair closer to the center of the vehicle.

Thanks to you my Baby is running again!!!!
I replaced relay 404/ 646 (4H0 951 253 C) the smaller half-cube ones.
The car fired right up, with no hesitation even after sitting for the last three months.
I still need to put everything back but once that is done I will take her for a
test drive and let you know...
