Maybe I’m being nitpicky but I’m 99.999999% in love with my A7. Its fast, its sleek, its sexy but MAN DO I HATE MY CUP HOLDERS. I can barely put anything larger than a 16 oz coffee and i can never put two cups in. Has anyone come up with a better solution?

I rarely have a beverage while driving other than an average-size bottle of water now & then, which I stow in the lower door pocket. I can't really comment on the center cup holders.

Could be worse. In the smaller Audi's, the cup holders are in front of the shifter and under the MMI so you can't put anything other than a medium/small drink in it.

I was just bitching about this to a co-worker when we ran out to get some fast food for lunch.

Two US large size cups do NOT fit for crap in our cupholders.

They sit at an angle and drip drank onto the floor between the seat and console.

Cup holder size is a uniquely American issue.

i was bitching about this the other day to my wife, i bought a nice insulated mug that is supposed to be cupholder friendly and it would not fit in my a6, meanwhile it fits just fine in the q5, and why does the q5 give you a heated/chilled cupholder option and not in the 6/7?

THIS.
German car makers never prioritize cup holders, as they prioritize the act of driving itself and have little interest in consuming or carrying fast food/drink in cars.

I'm surprised to learn that a heated/chilled cupholder option exists. Maybe for the US market only? In any event, maybe my theory about cup holders in German cars is half-baked!

Yeah. German car cupholders...

I was turned onto Ultimate Cup holders (https://www.ultimatecupholders.com/) for my porsche and now I just put one in all my cars. Some of the bigger drinks don't work, but coffee, water, etc are good.

No drinking in my car unless you want to walk. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the expensive nightmare of spilling something on the MMI console and then splashing the rest on the ventilated seats.

When I was testing an A4 with a friend, he noticed some of the buttons in front of the MMI weren’t working. Sure, because someone spilled sticky soda on the console. That alone was enough to not buy that car. Who knows what Christmas lights you’ll get on the dash one day as the connectors corrode.

I bet a couple of cans of mountain dew hard seltzer would fit though!

No, I've heard the same. The German engineer attitude is that breakfast should be enjoyed sitting in a cafe, then go drive. The Japanese engineer attitude is that if buyers want cup holders, then add cup holders! Sadly a significant proportion of American consumers judge a car's quality based primarily on the number of cup holders in the SUV cargo area.

The only vehicle I have seen it in was a Q5, but in a Hybrid. A friend was considering one and we went in many over a few weeks before we discovered the hybrid was the only one with the option.

Interesting examples of what drives decision-making in automotive engineering.

Our cup holders are absolutely terrible. I often get coffee in the morning on my way to work, and I have had 2 cups spill in my car so far. They definitely could have made them deeper.
That being said, the B6 a4 and s4 have a terrible cup holder design in the dash that barely holds something in place. It wasn't until the B7 that they put a cup holder in the center conference

The cup holders are perfect imo. 50ml coke or a standard coffee fits there, no problem. In the door a 1-1,5L will fit as well.

I guess the issue is mainly for the US market because everything is bigger there. You see it on the american design too, ford for example. All the interior buttons are quite bigger than in german cars for example 😂

Cars bigger, houses bigger, roads bigger… in europe, most countries have no AC units but in the US its about how BIG it can get.

My wife who lived in Utah and other friends have told me that it’s fairly common to eat on the go in the US, where as we often eat before going to work, or after getting there. Eating also happens on the way for some people, but that’s mainly in public transport.

I don't typically eat in the car. But I do acquire food with the car often.

Yes. We like VERY LARGE drinks. We get thirsty!

I really don't deal with any drinks nor cup holders; they're an open invitation for problems especially on the MMI. Focus is on the road, not the drink, distracted driving sucks

My 19 year old Porsche would like to challenge your disdain for the Audi cupholders. It has some, but completely useless. The Audi ones are smaller but they work fine on anything that will fit in it.

I use them and they're OK for me, I dont buy super size drinks... But I can see how larger drinks would be a problem, or even most coffee mugs..

What annoys me is how they are slanted to either side... Theyre not level

Right side is larger than left side as well.

Valid point. If one asks, Freddy's Frozen Custard will provide a recycled paper cupholder that may rest on the passenger seat and safely hold a giant milkshake on the drive home.
