View Full Version : Front Camber adjustment....

So, although I have 034 camber plates already, I need more camber out of the front. Looking around, I notice the TT ball joints are slotted allowing for some camber adjustment - not sure why this was not done on other MQB, but has anybody used TT ball joints for a bit more adjustment? I see whiteline makes a "kit", which looks like nothing more than the TT stock part... https://www.ecstuning.com/b-whiteline-parts/roll-centre-bump-steer-correction-kit/kca472~wtl/
Thoughts? I'd order some to try, but ECS not shipping for months looks like.

tt ball joints have brake caliper clearance issues on some wheel/bbk fitment on 8v and gti/r which is why you don't see it often.
Look into real camber plates, ground control or vorshlag. The eurosport posted above is an okay solution as well.

Real camber plates often require cutting metal off the strut tower....
I installed the EuroSport camber inserts along with adjustable Koni struts. Got the camber I wanted, but created a new problem, the top of the strut was now pushed to the edge of the hole in the strut tower. I had to cut the holes in the top of the strut towers larger to enable me to fit the adjustment knob on the struts. Was pretty easy to do, just had to pull everything apart again.

Used the two holesaw trick. Inner one was 1 3/8" and fit the existing hole in the strut tower pretty closely as my pilot bit. Outer one was 2 1/4"

This is the slug I cut out:

I masked the area off and sprayed it with some VHT Epoxy Paint I had on hand, to make sure the metal wouldn't rust where I cut it.
All in all, Camber is still not adjustable, but I now have some added camber for a reasonable price. Adjustable mounts would be nice, but they're all pretty pricy. If I decide to opt for them in the future, I now have the room to adjust them on the car with the holes enlarged.

Hmm. I've got the 034 plates already, and not cutting the towers on a street car though for my race cars in the past I did and machined up my own camber plate designs too. I think I'll just order a TT ball joint and try it out... if it works, then we'll all know - even then it won't make much difference (I gotta do the math to figure out how much). Another trick I could do easily is simply section the lower control arm - cut the end off and extend it 1/2"-3/4" depending on what that math says.
PS - Faceman, what's a "swivel"? that's not an automotive term. Do you mean hub? What's that camber difference between that and the regular part? I've not seen any confirmed data on that.

Superpro has LCA's that add another -.5 of camber. I have their camber plates, after a horrible experience with 034 rubber mounts (nvHHHHH) and I'm loving things so far. Running about -2.6 up front with springs+plates.
You could add the LCA's, and if you wanted add some roll center correction kits to fix roll center

MKTIP, thanks for the references. Those super pros look like they are just TT joints with blue covers, but I hadn't seen the RCA's before.
Phal, did your 034 mounts "clunk"? Mine sounds like the shocks are loose - I hate it but haven't figured it out yet. I hadn't seen those godspeed parts before either. Those look closest to what I want, but adjustment range looks about the same as the tt joints. I didn't lower my car that much so not sure I need the RCA portion and it wouldn't hurt to refresh my balljoints anyway.
Face - thanks for the link. Its officially called a "Steering knuckle" https://www.audiusaparts.com/auto-parts/2015/audi/s3/premium-plus-trim/2-0l-l4-gas-engine/front-suspension-cat/front-suspension-scat rather than a "swivel" which is dumb, but the thread is interesting - thanks.
Hmm. Not sure if I just get the tt joints or get the godspeed part - it doesn't list an 8v fitment though
Thanks for the convo.
** Update **
I ordered a TT balljoint to try out... Who knows, maybe its my balljoints popping and not my 034 camber plates (I hope).

The 034 camber mounts are known to be very noisy. Many uninstall them. They are not a serious solution for a street car.

Correct, they were CLUNKY and rode harsh. So far Superpro mounts are wonderful, a bit of a "squeaky" noise at full lock in reverse, may have to lube or tighten things up a bit, will check it out this weekend. Ball joints may be of help, but really I'd still suggest the superpro LCA's - lots of vendors such as Fas (got my camber mounts) through them have competitive pricing.

The Ground Control camber plates provide the most negative camber from what I've tested and they also limit the stack height to conserve bump travel.
To get the absolute maximum negative camber some fiddling is required but it's not rocket science and its all very easy to do. Punching out the shock tower is very easy and doesn't affect rigidity or strength. The GC plates also include the reinforcement ring so that your towers don't deform from heavy impacts.
Considering it takes less than 30 minutes to compress the springs, remove the top nut and swap plates I would start there.

I installed Whiteline ball joints...gave me 1.5 degrees of camber adjustability...now my steering feels lighter..

I did finally get a TTS ball joint to try out... whiteline looks like the TT part with a yellow boot - can't use them with the 034 plates though as its too much negative camber. With my wheel change to 9" wide wheels ET30 I'm getting negative camber wear just with the 034 mounts, so looks like that's all the camber I'll do. I got bigger benefit by putting the battery in the trunk - its very noticeable. Just using a lighter battery isn't the same, because this is a redistribution of the weight. I think this car is about as good as its going to get. Its no M2 (or even a A4/S4) for handling but not too bad.
