i put new main and rod bearings in (used block/crank).
The rod bearings seem too have a lot of side to side play, I was expecting a bit firmer seating.

Normal? Or do I need to measure the crank to see if the crank bearing is worn/undersized?

Bearings used are (see photos for part numbers) Glyco standard.

That's way to loose, there should be a few thousands play. But that's so bad I question if that's the correct rods for the crank. That loose you'll roll bearings, and excessive wear to the big end of the rod.
What kind of rod is that? I see it's upgraded. Can't cross out wrong size bearing all together. I'd definitely take journal measurements and compare to new OE and wear limit before getting different bearings. Also that makes for a lot of piston movement, I'd be concerned you'll be scraping the cylinder walls. Good way to destroy a piston or more. I used kings racing bearings and they spec out great. We also use them a lot at my work.
