View Full Version : Traffic Jam Assist

After using vcds to code the lane assist with early vs late intervention i switched my sight on getting traffic jam assist enabled.
From the info I was able to find, a vag can cable is needed and vcds wont work, but I was not able to find what/how to code the module to enable the feature.
Anybody here has done it or has more information on how to do this modification?

Do you have any information regarding enabling TJA? I haven't been able to find any substantial information as to whether someone has been able to code it in etc.

the only other info I found is from a VW forum and another Audi forum. Where, indeed, guys from Australia has found the way to code it into their a3 Q5s. I am just unsure if they can do it on can/us cars and I don't have the name of the person to contact. The only thing you would need to buy is a Vag Can Pro cable and then pay for the service (seems it was 150$ on the forum from the guy in Sydney)

so what does this actually do? makes adaptive cruise resume from stop after 5 seconds and follows lane lines at slower speeds?
SolarRS3
05-15-2019, 09:47 AM
mix adaptive cruise control, lane assist, side assist as well. It uses the car in front, side and movement of those car to follow them and turn in curves. it work at low speed and seems like a more intelligent lane assist (than when used alone at highway speed for exemple.)

Main thing is it turns for you...and allows you to set lane assist to “early” this keeps the car dead center of the lane when cruising....

Ross tech VCDS. The cheap ones use pirated software which is just wrong and on top of that is most likely outdated and might now work on recent cars

A little treat I found in my research – how to activate the ALA guidelines in the HUD:
HUD Module 82
long coding
Lane Departure Warning -> set to available.
HUD Module 82
Adaptations
Personalized settings MMI
Lane assistant -> set to yes
Traffic Jam Assist Coding
I made so many attempts at this so I am not going to guarantee the following is in the right sequence (but I don’t think the sequence matters that much to be honest as if it did mine would not be working). Usual disclaimers need to be noted that this worked for me and not saying it will work for you or if it is legal where you live etc etc – try at your own risk!
My car: MY18, Built 2017, SQ5 Australian delivery. Has all add on’s (DAP etc) but it seems for these cars in Australia they do not include TJA, ALA or the traffic sign recognition (note for the traffic sign one I am waiting on a Kufatec dongle to enable that one as it does need parameterization of the camera). Have previously activated ALA following MitchFin’s instructions (and it works great) from this forum so note that ALA was activated before I did TJA as below.
After each and every change (ie each long coding and adaptation make sure you long press the green tick to accept each change as you go).
Control unit: 13 Adaptive Cruise Control
Long Coding:
Assistent_for_traffic_hold_up -> activated
Traffic_jam_assistant_in_car_menu -> activated
Traffic_jam_dependent_linear_tracking -> activated
Driveaway by triggerleaver -> activated
Auto driveaway after short stop -> activated
Auto driveaway by pretrigger -> activated
Curve_assistent -> activated
Dense_traffic -> activated
Emergency_assist ->installed
Emergency_steer_assist -> activated
Note – some of these were already activated – I assume they are part of the stop & go function of the ACC.
Adaptations:
Nil
Control Unit A5: Front Sensors Driver Assistance System (Enter Security Code: 20103 before coding)
Long Coding
STA -> coded
Adaptations
Nil
Control Unit 44: Steering
Long Coding
Heading control assistant -> active
Traffic jam guidance assist -> active

Control unit 5F: Information control unit (Enter Security Code: 20103 before coding)

Adaptations
Fahrzeug funktionsliste bap2 generation erweiterung:
Front_traffic_assist_0x41 -> activated
Front_traffic_assist_0x41_msg_bus -> terminal 15
Vehicle configuration:
VZA pro: On
Once all the above have been done, and you have accepted each change successfully as you have made them, reset the MMI. Once re-started I then hit the car on/off button to turn off. Get out of the car and lock it. Wait 5 minutes then get back in and start the car and go for a test drive (in multi-lane traffic, moving slow with good line markings)
Hope it works for you all.

He actually said that he would do it for free but donations were appreciated, which I think would be appropriate.
Looking forward to it. I emailed them today and they said that I would have to wait and something about a USPS mail problem...I guess at some point, the packages move to USPS and that's what I'm waiting for.

So if you have acc the car basically drives itself? I drive the e-tron and was really impressed how well it held lanes on the highway.
ACC is stop/go radar assist cruise control and that works from the factory.
ALA is auto lane assist and it also works from the factory but it has 2 things that could be improved on. 1 - it doesn't hold center...allows the car to get pretty close the line before it corrects, resulting in a ping pong effect between the lines 2-3 times before it requires steering input (it tells you and then turns ALA off!) and 2 - it only works above 40mph.
We are talking about TJA - Traffic Jam Assist which apparently 1 - adds the "early" option to your ALA which keeps the car in the middle of the lane and 2 - will hold the car in the center of the lane all the way to 0 MPH. It will also go longer without steering input...but will ask for it eventually. This is not auto-driving but in a well-defined lane (lines on both sides) can stop/go and keep the car in the center of the lane all the way to 0...so it kinda drives itself but it's not going to change lanes and make decisions for you.

Thanks for the clarification. I know "driving irself" may not be the most accurate description, but I meant more like drives itself in a lane.
Do we know how long it let's you not give input. After about 45 seconds the e tron beeps at you and then actually pumps your seatbelt! It has sensors in the wheel. I assume the rs3 requires input in steering since it doesnt have steering wheel sensors.
How does the rs3 notify you? I wouldn't want this mod if it's going to keep at me every 30 seconds.

I’m not sure on the lane assist but I understand that the current 3 second timeout at 0mph (when you would then need to touch the gas to resume ACC is increased - someone said 15 seconds but we will see!

Hi everyone, I was able to use the VCP to flash TJA thanks to peshs4 lending me his cable. Thanks to him, he got me in touch with the guy in AUS who helped him out.
Julian taught me how to flash the new parameter set to the camera to help the community. So happy to help!
Some pointers, you need to have Early configured for lane keep assist for the TJA to work. If you don't have it and set to Early, TJA will not work even if you flash it. It had slipped my mind and I was bummed that it wasn't working on one of the cars we flashed. After an exciting but discouraging ride back with BaltimoreCeasar, just as we were about to park I suddenly remembered! So don't make my mistake!
It allows lane keep assist to work below 38 MPH. So for example, you set it on the highway and if it slows down due to traffic, it'll still stay centered in the lane automatically. When traffic starts up again, you hit the gas or pull back on the stalk to get it moving again. It'll automatically switch from Traffic Jam mode to standard Adaptive Cruise Control.
As for time duration, it appears that it is the same amount of time as using normal ACC.
Hope this helps!

So I made a donation to Julian since I kinda figured it out but appreciated his time answering my questions and using his experience. Also made a donation to Pesh for the cable. So my cost is probably not what everyone's cost will be.
That being said, I'd be willing to help the community by providing the instructions on how to use the application when you have the cable. It's nothing secret but figuring out which parameter file to download and how to navigate the application.
We ended up flashing the new parameter to four RS3s this weekend and they all appear to be working.
Entire process shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. The application install and all the associated downloads is what takes the most time.

You'll need to code that in so that the camera can steer for you and keep you centered in the lane.
You'll need to code it then enable it in the MMI.
Lane Assist Early (set via menu):
A5 - Front Sensors Driver Assistance
-long coding
-Byte 14 bit 5-7 (maybe... confirm since I think this is where it's at but it's not mentioned in the VCDS thread)
-point_of_intervention: early (setting via menu)
You'll need to go into the MMI and manually set it to early.

Alright, folks here's the entire process. Happy to help the community. If you need help, feel free to reach out.
Prep
Download the activator program here:
http://www.vcpsystem.com/vcpsystem/install/vcpsetup_v8.zip
1. Run VCP installer and connect the cable to your computer.
2. Click the connect button and run Download 1 and Download 2. This took like... 30 minutes to an hour. So I just had it download while I was doing something else around the house.
3. Using VCDS or the VCP (if you're done downloading), confirm the hardware model of the camera (all of the ones I flashed were 3Q0980654H) but confirm by going to Module A5 and look at the Part #.
4. Once the downloads are completed, run the Filemanager and find the A3 front assist camera file and download it. The file I used was TrafficJam Assist Activation Data for 3Q0980654H - dated 2017-10-11. This will ensure that you're flashing the right camera parameter for the right camera (I believe that the parameter set includes your car size and etc. So it would be important to match your vehicle.). Once you have the ZDC file and all the downloads completed you're ready to upload the ZDC file (which contains the parameters) to the camera.
Flashing
1. Plug in the VCP dongle to your vehicle and computer.
2. Open VCP System application.
3. Open "Guided Functions"
4. On the right side of the page select "Apps" under "Module"
5. Select "Upload parameter data", hit next
6. Confirm that the ignition is on, engine is off, your battery is not going to die anytime soon, and hit next
7. Hit "Open ZDC file" and select the file you downloaded earlier.
8. Make sure "EraseFullMemory" is checked under ZDC Info. If this is not selected, the application will not be able to flash the camera and you'll get an error.
9. Select module A5 (Front Camera) under ECUs
10. Select appropriate data to upload, in our case, it was "Limo_TRAFFIC_JAM_ASSIST"
11. Check your selection
12. Click "Upload selected data". You may get an error on your dash from lane assist. One of the cars we flashed gave warning, the others did not.
12. Sit there and wait until you get the Successful message in the bottom of the window
13. After you get confirmation that it is done, you can close the window.
14. Guided functions window will instruct you to turn off your ignition, do that.
There may be some instances where the parameter set does not take. You can attempt to reflash using the same process.
Clean up
The flash will generate some errors saying data corruption for the camera module in VCDS. You can clear these errors as they are from the flashing process.
Confirmation
Take the car for a test drive and make sure you have your lane keep assist button turned on. It may have turned it off during the flash.
You will know that the TJA is working if it keeps LKA on below 38 MPH.

You'll need a different cable. A Vag Can Pro (VCP). A few members here have purchased one and have volunteered to rent theirs out which prompted the new activity on this thread. More people are thinking of doing it themselves because I learned how to flash TJA and posted the instructions above. Previously you had to rent a cable and pay someone to do it for you.

You'll need a different cable. A Vag Can Pro (VCP). A few members here have purchased one and have volunteered to rent theirs out which prompted the new activity on this thread. More people are thinking of doing it themselves because I learned how to flash TJA and posted the instructions above. Previously you had to rent a cable and pay someone to do it for you.
ok thankyou. and thanks to everyone offering to rent it out. Bummer that I can't do this with my $250 Ross tech cable

Y'all are welcome!
Now to try to figure out Traffic Sign Recognition. :)
VCP (Vag Can Pro) is a fairly powerful interface which can set parameters like the TJA, flash modules and also do coding, adaptation changes, error codes, etc. Generally always in stock in the US here:
Interface | Vag Can Professional (https://europrice.us/interface-vag-can-professional)
Comes with a 1 year subscription which has support and file access for things like firmware and parameter files.
If anyone has questions about VCP don't hesitate to let me know either here or PM/email:

Darn and I waited forever to get mine from Poland. Looks slightly different than the pic on your site though.
Any good English support forums?
Edit - Looked into this a little more. Not sure if they just changed their site and that's an old photo, or what - but the correct manufacturer URL is www.vcpsystem.com
Here's a picture of mine:
165464
You can setup an account here for English support and they get back in a day or so:
https://vcpsupport.pl/otrs/customer.pl
The logo did change on the interface from VAG CAN PRO to just VCP, but it's the same interface and software.
Generally keep 5-10 in stock in the US, mainly for newer model taillight kits but as people have noticed it can do some other useful things that other interfaces cannot.
Cheers,

Coded early active lane assist using OBDeleven, works great. Once I get my hands on a Windows PC I'll flash for TJA with pesh's cable, hopefully all done this weekend! Btw, my hardware model for the camera is 3Q0980654A, not 3Q0980654H. Hope it still works...

Keep in mind though that the VCP cable has a yearly activation fee and if needed, seems like some community members here are willing to share.
I think VCDS is way more polished and to be honest, I haven't had a need for VCP other than to set the one parameter for TJA.

I just flashed mine, and it’s doing something strange. It enables the lane assist below 38 mph however, it’s still request steering input every 10 seconds or so. I have the revision a camera hardware, with the revision H camera software. Any of the others who have enabled this, do you see any type of annunciation in the dash panel indicating that traffic jam assist is enabled? Or does it simply Hold lady guidance below 38 mph?

Yeah from what I've experienced you can enable the lane assist at any speeds and it'll keep you in the lane granted that the lanes are clearly visible. The steering input request is normal. There's no indication that the lane assist is on besides it showing 2 green lines/lanes on the dash. For the traffic jam assist it works as long as you're above the certain speed and both lines/lanes are showing green on the dash.

Not traffic jam assist but if you just want euro lane keep assist (early setting so it stays centered) you can do with VCDS via code below. Probably the best vcds "mod" I've found.
Lane Assist Early (set via menu)
Module: A5 - Front Sensors Driver Assistance
long coding helper
Byte 14 - bit 5 - 7 Set to: point_of_intervention,early (setting via menu)
**NOTE** i had to go into lane assist via mmi and manually set it to early, even though the value is set to early

Hmm makes sense that it would stop if you're going faster than a traffic jam would allow.
Not sure about the curved section of highway... maybe a safety setting? I would think that on a curved section of highway you might want to be a little bit more cautious about having automatic steering/cruise.
