View Full Version : No more blinking brake lights!

Hi,
I am always annoyed by the blinking brake lights with the dynamic turn signals for the US market, and have finally enabled the coding to disable this "US Only feature".
The brake lights and rear fogs (as they are the very end part of the overall brake light) will only come on when you use the brakes.
The rear fogs will also function as normal with the switch.
The coding below worked on my 2018 TTS, but "your actual mileage may vary" and as always backup your settings before making any changes.
Use at your own risk...

I don't know if this will work on any other platform, as personally I only have a TTS.
My suggestion would be to look and see if any of the same signal names are in your Central Electronics module, and then change the values for just one of the lights.
If that light works OK, then do the others, if not, you only have a couple of values to change back.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Yeah I was able to get into Central Electronics (9) and the Adaptation, but none of the options you mentioned exist in my list. Could be a limitation of the OBDEleven or it isn’t possible to change this on the A4.
Hopefully someone with a VAG-COM and a A4 can check this out to confirm.

No difference in the wiring between the two, and this function is directly form the Central Electronics module.

Actually I just got confirmation from someone with OLED taillights. Yes, it works.
Since you also discover that the wiring for LED and OLED is the same, I was also wondering what would be the involvement to retrofit OLED taillights aside from the hardwares.

Hi,
UPDATE: I have the OLED tail lights working on my 2018 TTS !!
Plug and play, as I was told, with no coding or modifications needed.
YOU MUST HAVE THE LIGHT SWITCH SET TO "0" AND THE IGNITION "OFF" WHILE DOING THIS INSTALL!!!
NOTE: Light Switch MUST BE IN THE "AUTO" position for this to work, after you complete the installation.
https://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/download/file.php?id=399503&mode=view
If you want to enable the DRLs for the rears (so the OLED panels stay on all of the time/even when switch is at "0", like the video) here is the coding:
-rear DRLs
Unit 09

Hi,
Sorry, the front turn signals with the LED head lights are basically just a simple LED setup.
There is no "intelligence" in the system, and so the dynamic turns aren't possible, unfortunately.
In order to get the dynamic turns for the fronts, we need:
1. the matrix LED headlights
2. add the LIN bus wiring to control the dynamic function (like the rears)
3. the correct coding to enable the control function
I don't believe that anyone has figured this out yet.

So basically the OLED in US spec TT is direct swap with standard LED without additional coding but US Spec OLED is lacking of the startup animation that our European siblings get. Hopefully you can figure out the coding for animation and that is likely will be my next project to retrofit OLED. Just getting OLED without animation doesn't tempt me enough to pull trigger.

Hi, and thanks for all of the information on this mod. I have been interested in doing this since I purchased my car. I apologize in advance for the questions as I think you are pretty clear, but some folks that did this swap early on in Europe had indicated that the electrical connector at the taillight was different and had an additional wire, presumably to support the additional animation.
Can you confirm that this is not the case, and these are a "plug n play" swap?
I have not yet learned Vagcom, but need to as I also have all the parts to enable the direct TPMS but have not installed them yet as I'll have to code them. I'm nervous because I tried coding on a BMW 1M Coupe years ago, and just could not figure out that software, it may have as well have been in Swahili. Tell me that Vagcom is more user friendly, please?
In the video of the OLED's, I believe you are saying that all of the coding has been done on them to make them light the way they do? They would also have had the "blinking brake lights had you not already have coded the car to change that?
Thanks again, for trail blazing, and sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I really understand before making the plunge. These are the 2 options I really had hoped would have been available stand alone.

If you already have the dynamic LED turn signals, you have all 7 of the needed wires in your connector (8 pins total with #8 not used).
I have the wiring diagrams for both the US and ROW cars and can confirm they are identical for both LED and OLEDs.
Can you confirm that this is not the case, and these are a "plug n play" swap?
I can confirm this is the case, they are direct plug and play with no wiring needed, when I did the install on my 2018 TTS... :-)

I feel your pain on the BMW coding "tools" as I have a 2008 X5 that has very extensive coding and upgrades.
The VagCom tool is SO MUCH EASIER to use than all of the BMW tools (NCS Expert, INPA, Tool32, etc) and there is no long drawn-out setup or huge datum files to configure and manage.
In the video of the OLED's, I believe you are saying that all of the coding has been done on them to make them light the way they do? They would also have had the "blinking brake lights had you not already have coded the car to change that?
Sorry for running 2 topics together in one post, but they are related, so thought I'd keep them together.
1. The coding at the top of the post will disable the blinking brake lights, so you will only have the dynamic turn signals.
This will work with the OLEDs or the LEDs, as I wanted to eliminate that "US Only" annoying feature, hope that answers your question.
2. The second coding for the rear DRLs is needed if you want the OLED panels and LED strip to stay on like in the second photo above.
This is how the rest of the world's OLEDs look, and will make the OLEDs look like all of the videos you see on the internet.
This is NOT needed if you use the LED tail lights, unless you want the red LED strip on all of the time.
Thanks again, for trail blazing, and sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I really understand before making the plunge. These are the 2 options I really had hoped would have been available stand alone.
No problem... glad I could give back to the community.

How exactly do you remove that piece that covers the installation screws for the lights? It looks as though it may be a one time use piece from the documentation. Talks about an adhesive.

I actually used prying tool to separate the cover pieces and destroyed adhesive in the process. To put it back, I applied 3M automotive adhesive tape in place of the old ones to place the cover back.

Hi Rapture,
You can just pry them loose from the top side (I used a plastic trim tool) and the adhesive will stay in place.
Then when you have the lights replaced just press them back into the fastners.

Well, I installed my tail lamps (thanks fellas for the help). A few observations.
First, they look great!
* As John points out, don't try to remove the adhesive on the plastic pieces that cover the bolts, just disconnect the clips and flip them up
* The lights require a significant pull to remove them once the bolts are out. I thought mine were screwed in somewhere at first, but they just require a really good pull and they are awkward to grab a hold of
* I had to mess around with the adjusters on the lights to get them to line up nicely against the rear hatch when bolting the new ones in, but eventually figured it out.
* Now I understand better why the red blinking brake lights have to go as it's overkill, particularly with these as the real blinkers are amber (need to obtain that Vagcom)
* I noticed the OLED's go though a little dance when you move the light switch from 0 to Auto. I could see in the reflection of my cabinets behind the car
* When the light switch is on Auto the rear DRL are lit on mine, but maybe that is only because the light sensor has turned them on along with the headlights. If that is the case coding to turn off the rear DRL on would be nice.
I'm happy I did this, I think the OLED look very cool the way they "float" inside the lamps.

Hi Rapture,
Congrats, glad you like them.
The DRL coding is needed for 2 reasons:
1. You will see the "little dance" because the lights are going through phase changes in the CEL controller...
2. Without the DRL coding, the brake lights will look funky whenever they OLEDs are off (like in daylight)
The OLED panels will be dark all of the time, and will look like black rectangles in front of brake lights.
Get Vagcom, and we'll get your coding done.

Well, I receive the interface cable and was able to make the changes to the lights. You were correct that this software is much more user friendly to use. I noticed that the numbers were different for the Rear Fog Lights, in the software mine were A, B, C 26 for the left and 27 for the right. When I did the DRL coding there were 2 entries named "Daytime Running Lights" within the software, one worked to enable them and the other did not, weird.
I had a bit of a time at first finding where to input the Security Access number, but found it.
Now on to find some other things to change.

Thanks, I've read through that thread and I am going to try these today:
Coming/Leaving home without the low beams, just DRL's
Third brake light always on but at a lower light output. Interested in seeing how this looks with the new tail lamps.
Service position for the wipers enabled in the MMI. This would be nice for car washing
I had my dealer do the Deactivate fasten seat belt prior to picking the car up, or I would do that one also.
I also need to do the Active TPMS coding which looks quite a bit more involved, but I need to install the wiring for that first. That looks like real work.

It would be interesting to see if the Active TPMS options are available on your TTS. You should take a look based on VBM’s well documented instructions. I would think if you have access to the configuration options in VCDS he describes in the write up it would work if you install the TPMS antenna and the sensors in the wheels. Worth a look.
I enabled the third brake light always on at 5% brightness and think it’s pretty cool. I figured out quickly when they say always on, that’s what it means. It doesn’t turn off unless the doors are locked. I then changed it to the second option which only enables it when “auto lights” turns the lights on, or you switch them on. Then the brake light goes off when the coming home function turns the lights off. Much better, no drained battery.

OLED tails are a standalone option in Canada. The option packaging here is quite different than in USA for whatever reason.
The 2018 I was lucky enough to find (still on a dealer lot) was optioned with these individual options:
102800
Note these are CDN $ prices - US $ equiv would be about 75% of what's shown.

Good point,
The OLED’s were a stand alone option for a period of time in Canada, and then at a point in time they were no longer available. I remember some folks thought they had them included on their order but did not get them.
I could not understand at the time why they would be a stand alone option in Canada but not the U.S. I’m thinking now it was due to manufacturing capability.
Now it seems we have also learned that the NA market received a different version with red led turn signals instead of amber, and no start up animation.

Sorry if I am just repeating the question that has been asked, but I am about to pull the trigger on ordering a new TTRS and dont want to mess this up. If when ordering the US TTRS I do not spec it with the US oleds i can purchase a set of the oleds in the link and they will have the animation? Then from there I can pick up Vagcom and make required coding changes. Thanks again, I just want to make sure I am getting this right before I make a mistake.

Damn, wish I came across this a while ago. Ordered my TT RS with the US spec OLEDs because my sales rep specifically referenced a video with the animations. Either way, thanks for all the info and hard work, John.

I have received this fault but was not exactly sure what it is related to. Is this what you have? I inquired on the Ross Tech forum and it appears someone else also had this happen, but no information yet on a resolution.

I'm the "someone else [that] also had this happen". [:)]
What is causing the fault code "526359 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded" for Control Unit 09 are the changed values for the left and right brake lights 20 B and 21 B (leuchte 20 B and 21 B), no idea why this is happening. I've tried all the logical options, but they all cause this module incorrectly coded error.
There doesn't seem to be any side effects to this "526359 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded", but because I'm very anal about these things, I decided to do the following:
VCDS - Rear brake & fog lights not blinking with the turn indicator by itself, but still blink when the brake light is on
Control Unit 09 (Central Electronics)
Security Access: 31347

Leuchte20BR LA71-Lichtfunktion C 20 change to Blinken Links Hellphase (was Blinken Links Dunkelphase)

Yea this is exactly what I had for fault. And you are right with the brake lights. My educated guess to why it throws that fault is based on the coding for the module for the safety protocal on the brake lights. I too am anal so I was trying various different ways to keep the turn signals (when modded) the same. Seems not to be the case. I have a 2019 Face lift TTRS. My girlfriend has a 2018 TT sline competition and did the same. Atleast I know Im not the only one whose had this happen, and thanks for the response!

Interesting, I'm OCD also, but if this is really not causing a problem other than the fault code I'll probably leave it as is. My question would be, what's different about the ROW cars that they don't have a fault code, are we suggesting that maybe there is a hardware difference?
I had also changed my center brake lights to be on at 5% all of the time and was wondering if that could be part of this. Have either of you coded that option?
Maybe we can get someone to chime in at the Ross Tech forum now that we think we have identified what change caused the fault to appear.

The dealership service departments may not like that fault code, and may possibly re-code the module, we could try to tell them what is going on and request them not to touch it...
No, I've not re-coded the center brake light, as I stated before:

If you feel we may get an answer from Ross-Tech, go ahead and try to say something at the Ross-Tech forums, feel free to quote me and I'll supplement your post if appropriate. That thread that you created and I replied, is in the wrong group there, i.e retrofits, and, as I stated before, should be moved back to where you posted originally.
Have you tried my modded mod? It's not a bad solution/compromise and the rear turn signals look pretty good this way in my opinion, and if you don't touch the brakes at all, they look "exactly" like the ROW vehicles (not exactly as we have red LEDs for the rear turn lights). In your case you may have amber/yellow rear turn signals with your retrofitted OLEDs.

Yes, It could be a hardware change. I’m a highly certified technician at a VW dealer and have been for years. Sometimes when comparing Eurospec vehicles, minor hardware changes are made (different letter suffix in the part number) which usually indicates a change of somesort. It would be cool to have a European spec vin number to run in Etka to see if this is the case. Typically these minor differences are from legal demands from a certain market. A perfect example is most of the VW models on the euro side already have functions enabled like comfort windows (open and closing via remote) where our market doesnt due to pinch protection laws and such. I know for a fact based on MTO standards, that things like signals have to be within a time span of activation, and the amount of illumination required is a DOT/MTO standardization required in the north american market, where as Europe may not have those specifics. Example, NA market newer 8v a3/s3/rs3 have tailights and wiring that have the whole tail light signal. Where euro versions have a different tailight assembly with just the sweep only, in this case its both hardware change of the tailights and slight wiring difference with coding, even though the tail light appears to look identical. I would also be curious on the RossTech side to see if maybe there is in fact to have hardcoding reconfigured by something that maybe we cant see on adaptation channels to rid of the code. Like stated, if you take your car to the dealer lets say for an issue revolving with 09 central electrics, they may SVM reflash your module in the event they see that fault and have no information as to why its there to diag/fix the car.

Thanks flg, it looks like you were able to convince the Ross-Tech group to move the thread on their forum, maybe we'll get some additional input.
I have not tried your enhanced mod, and my turn signals are amber so for me it would not look quite as nice. I agree though, it is a nice compromise. As long as I know that this is not really a problem I should be able to work through this with the dealer service if needed, or change the coding back if they re-flash it. It surely does punctuate though how complex the software is for new vehicles and how much they can be different for various markets.
Lets hope someone on the other forum can validate if this can be addressed via coding or not. Again, I'm just happy to understand what was causing the error.

I think he’s asking why the euro OLEDs operate differently than the US lights do. The answer is there’s actually a hardware difference that was identified through a part number difference. That being said, nobody, outside of Audi, knows exactly what’s different at this time I believe.

Not so Stupid.
If you install the Euro OLED’s in a NA car they will have the start up animation that the U.S. version does not have. That functionality appears to be built into the tail lamp.
The Euro tail lamps have amber colored blinkers while the NA model is red.
Regardless of which OLED is installed,or if you do this mod on non OLED tail lights, if you do the coding to remove the additional brake and fog light blinking when the turn signals are used, this causes a control module (09) to present a fault code. This brake and fog light blinking with the turn signals is a U.S. requirement, something to do with total light output (We have some old and strange DOT lighting rules). Everything works properly if you do the coding and you now see the sequential turn signals operating as designed, but the revised coding creates a fault code which may be read by an Audi service department when the car is in for normal service. A dealer may then override (re-flash) the coding and bring the car back to the flashing brake and fog lights again.
We are hoping that someone may be able to determine if another coding change may remove the fault code from appearing. That however may not be possible to do.

It should be noted that the discussion of this fault code, when the brake lights in module 09 are re-coded, and this thread "No more blinking brake lights!", is not specific to the retrofit or use of OLEDs. It applies to all US spec TT MK3 with LED or OLED tail lights, that are factory installed or otherwise.

I have a reading comprehension problem. Really. So, the coding of euro/row OLED's on US/nar cars (specific TT's) will not code? Just coding the us/nar LED or OLED on US cars wil pose an issue, the infamous fault code?

This fault code will apply to any NA model car that you remove the blinking brake and fog lights with the coding. It is not dependent on installing the OLED tail lamps. The thread has multiple topics which is causing a bit of confusion.

Hi,
Been watching this thread for the past few days and I also have the fault code "526359" when I scan my 2018 TTS.
So, I guess my modifications weren't 100% without consequences... No good deed goes unpunished I guess---- [facepalm]
I'm just going to live with it, the added functionality is worth the error in my scan tool.
I only have about another 12 months left on my warranty and after that my TTS will never see the stealership again, as I have an awesome Indy that does the work on all of my cars.
Sorry for the hassle folks, guess I should have checked more carefully.
Lesson learned.

Hi,
Glad you posted back, no sir, don't be sorry, thank you very much for this great mod, really appreciate that you published this.
I also only realized this fault after a while, and immediately realized that it was inconsequential, so I agree, it's probably best to live with it, and stay away from the stealerships… I'm still trying to find a good local one, don't really think such thing exists. I purchased an extended warranty, never did it before, but I may cancel it within the first year for a full refund. I also have a great local mechanic down the street, he is not Indy, but still great.
Because of this mod, I've also learned a lot about the programing of the lights in this vehicle, it's my wife that gets really scared with how much I've played with this, as several times I needed her help to press the brake pedal! She thinks that my TT RS is the best car in the world, and therefore I shouldn't be playing around with these mods.
Thank you again.

Hi,
UPDATE: I have the OLED tail lights working on my 2018 TTS !!

If you want to enable the DRLs for the rears (so the OLED panels stay on all of the time/even when switch is at "0", like the video) here is the coding:

The US OLEDs have the simple "on illuminate" unlock as you state...
You need to retrofit the European OLEDs (per this thread) if you want the cool unlock animation, and you also get the Amber turns signals as well.

-rear brake & fog lights stop blinking with the turn indicator
** You can try the changes on only 1 light and see if they work correctly, you don't have to do all of them at once**

Hmmmm... I too find this annoying on my B9 SQ5. Going to dig around in VCDS to see if this is do-able.

Just wanted to give a thread bump and feed back.
Purchased the Eurospec Oem OLEDs as per 95wildtt’s recommendation.
Super happy with them, and dealing with Norbert the seller was fantastic. We ran into an issue where there was damage from shipping. Going back and forth with Norbert, he stepped up and got everything sorted in a timely matter and went above and beyond to make things right without hesitation. Communication was constent and spot on, really solid and trusting person. Will be buying from him again for sure and I truly recommend anyone interested in unique oem parts to get in contact as he sells everything like leather airbags, steering wheels, ect.
Just some feed back with my experience

And, anyone know where to score a set at the best price?
Back when I was looking, I ran into someone selling them much cheaper than what is on bring sold on ebay.
Hundreds less.

I have a new, unused, OEM Europe Spec set, that I bought when I put in my order for a 22’ RS. What I was seeing at the time was the prices going way up on them so I pulled the trigger because I think it’s easily one of the best upgrades for the car. Sadly my allocation never came and my dealer only got a heritage to sell and they didn’t offer it to me.
Been holding out to see if I could find a 22’ in the wild mostly specd like I wanted but not going to happen.
I’ll create a post in the classifieds for them by this weekend. I’ll I’ve done is plugged them into my 18’ to make sure they worked when they arrived. Otherwise they’ve been sitting on my dining room table since I bought them. Still got the lens wrap on them.
I paid $1800ish for the ones on my 18’, 4 years later paid $2200ish for this other pair. I’m going to put them up for $2k, shipped anywhere in the 48.
There are websites you can order them today, not sure if they are the Euro ones, but they are listed for just under $4k for a pair.

I just did the coding for the turn signals and DRL on our 22 TTRS Heritage. As I have the US spec, I do not get the awesome animation. The turn signals do appear slightly amber though. Maybe not as amber as Euro spec.

I couldn't get the furthest out er most brake light to stop coming on with the sweep liek you did on my USDM OLED, which codes did you end up switching?
EDIT nevermind, I didnt code the foglight portion which is what they are.
