I am in the process of rebuilding the motor on my 2001 audi s4 2.7. I have been finding valves rangeing from around 100 all the way to 400. Can somebody please tell me what the major differences are to buying these three options. Im on a fairly toght budget since im a full time student. Here are a few links of the different prices ive found and consider buying.

Ps i know the ecs link is only exaust valves. Im just showing for price difference.

I would love to buy the $80 one but i dont want to run into big problems later on with crappy valves. This is my first rebuild.

You really want to take a chance on cheap valves. Seems like if anything that would be the one thing you wouldn't skimp on. Imagine one of them breaking and dropping into the top of a piston. At that point a budget is the least of your concerns.

Have you had all your clearances measured? Are you sure you need new valves? What about valve sleeves?

The super tech or ferrea valves are generally used in higher HP applications where you want to extend the redline. I would avoid the iconnel variant in any event because they are brittle. I would not get cheap Ebay valves unless you want to risk having to pull your heads again in 20k miles.

Why not just use stock heads/valves again? Are you really going to be making enough power that you need them? Seems from my knowledge you could just do springs and you would be fine to rev higher if that's what you are looking for...

To Tommy's point, why are you doing valves at all? Because you have to (repairing a dead motor?) or because you want to (8k+ noises and power band advantages?) If you're already on a tight budget, I imagine you're not doing such a large turbo that you need the extra rev range. If you truly need to upgrade the valves and have a fixed budget that requires going "cheap" on some components, cheap out on the components that don't fail with such catastrophic results. My $0.02

Stock S4 valves arent good for much higher rpm than stock so only valve springs might not work. If you're on a budget just get a good junkyard or partout motor and refresh the gaskets. That will cost you enough to bring you to your senses. Not to mention revving higher without anything bigger than a k04 turbo setup makes zero sense.

I'd be more worried about valve guides being worn than I would be about replacing the valves. I surely wouldn't replace the oem parts with no name chinese crap.

Shops usually machine valves for $5-10 each and similar to cut the valve seats, and that will give you a perfect valve seal again.

If your a student i wouldnt bother getting into a big rebuild, focus on school and be glad your not driving a honda civic.

If it is your prerogative to get into an engine build and want it to consume your life and wallet you should always buy nice

buy nice or buy twice. and the second time is always more expensive then doing it right the first time

Last thing you want to go with is cheap valves because of the high EGT's. So best to stick with stock like sodium filled valves, SS valves that have nitrate coating or just go with high end inconel valves or super alloy that are designed for very high temps and pressures.

The last thing I would want to do if I were a full-time student on a tight budget is to start a 2.7t engine build.

+2, it's not cheap even if you source lightly used parts.

I am getting ready to get into a build and I am not too excited about the cost to build 2.7

OP: There have been many questions asked of you so that we can help YOU make a good decision. Are you going to respond or just peace out?

You might make out better just buying a set of clean heads. Otherwise if I were on a budget I would do the stainless supertech ones.

Speaking as someone who had to own this car on a budget for a good many years.... DONT GO CHEAP. And NEVER buy something that is mechanically critical, i.e. turbos, valve terrain, clutches, flywheels, etc, off of ebay. You will hate yourself for doing it. I bought a "stage 2" clutch off ebay.... I was in there again replacing it under 30K after I did it, and I got off light... I've had friends destroy their motors and drive-terrain with "performance" parts from some vendor on ebay.
Every time I tried to save a buck on cheap(er) parts I have almost always had to go back in and replace it with some quality parts. Its almost never worth it because the parts almost never last. Your going to end up spending the money on it after the cheapo thing fails, not to mention the additional downtime for the car and yourself as your in there.... Again.. doing the same thing you did. So it is really worth it to have the car down that extra two weeks to get the extra capital to get the quality part.
I'm not saying buy the most expensive part because the price proves its the best part.... But if it's for the s4.. and its cheap.. I wouldn't strap it to anything that I would get pissed if it broke a couple of months down the line.

I have a set of mint 2.7t heads I will sell you for cheap. I even have pistons I can throw in too if need be. PM me

Edit: heads have right around 115k. Oil changed every 3k.. basically pay for shipping and they are yours.
