Was going to ask if headlights turning off with turn signal is still a thing on B9. Damn. Looks like I'll get a new cable after all...

Thanks for sharing. Hoping for that turn signal code too.

Thanks for posting this info. I was waiting for someone to come up with an OBDEleven thread. I used mine on my old S3 and made some tweaks. We were never able to get the gear selection as it was stored in a module (TCU?) that was unavailable. Excited to try that one out. Curious to see what else we can come up with.

I did the above mod showing gear in D/S and changed to a double beep when locking the car a few months ago. OBDeleven works well. Tonight I may fiddle some more with it.

I did the gear showing in the D. I also wanted to disable the Auto Start/Stop but when I did it showed a message that said something like "Auto Start/Stop malfunction see dealer for service" I don't know if that message would display each time or just the one time I change it so I changed it back to how it was. It was late so I'll try it again tonight and see how it works out.

Yes I had the same issue with the start/stop that’s why I didn’t originally post it. I haven’t had time to test it and see if it comes on every time.

Yes I had the same issue with the start/stop that’s why I didn’t originally post it. I haven’t had time to test it and see if it comes on every time.

So I tried it again last night and the car would not save the changes. I went for a drive to get gas and the car turned off as usual when stopped. The message did not appear as before when I first started it up so I thought I was in the clear.

When I got home I checked and found that the change I did with the OBDEleven had reverted back to "Active" I tried serval times to change it to "Deactivate" in the Engine Module but it refused to save it. Each time I would turn the ignition accessory off and open the door and close it, then turn on and connect again it would always revert back to "Active"

Frustrated I started poking around online and came across some Q7 forums where a member suggested this:

Module: 08/Air Conditioning
Adaptaion
A/C comfort param for start/stop function
Old Value: 5
New Value: 0

I can confirm that this does in fact work. The only thing about this change is that according to the Q7 member is that if the HVAC is off the car will activate the start/stop as before. I haven't had a chance to try this since its my wife's car, but even so I don't ever plan to turn the HVAC off anyway.

The only other thing that bugs me is that when you use the park assist button, the camera view reverts back to the graphic view. It's odd because it seems like when I change it sometimes it will hold the camera view if the car is only turned off for a short time but seems to revert back to the graphic by the next day. I'm wondering if there is a setting that can be changed by the OBDEleven so this is no longer the case.

Yeah I’ve seen the HVAC method but it’s not reliable especially for people that routinely have the HVAC off like myself. I don’t mind turning it off every time I get in the car. As far as the park assist, I like the way the camera pops up but feel free to see if there’s anything you can do to change it.

If I find another method to the start stop I'll report back. I also saw how some people say depending on the brake pressure you can keep the motor on. So if come to a stop and have light pressure on the brake but enough to hold you, the motor should stay on. When you apply heavy pressure then the motor with turn off. Since its my wife's daily driver I haven't played around with this technique yet.

I should have been more clear with the park assist. I have the Prestige model which gives you the 360 degree camera view option while using the park assist. What the car does is that the park assist works likes its supposed to whether your in D or R, but the 360 camera will revert back to just a graphic image with proximity sensors rather then using the actual real time image with sensors. I have to use the MMI wheel to toggle over to the camera option. Then it wont save the camera and goes back to the graphic image.

Yes I also have the prestige and I get what you’re saying. Idk I guess I prefer the graphic with the proximity sensors rather than the 360 camera. It’s kind of off-putting and throws off my distance judgements but again that’s just me.

Any luck?

Unfortunately I’ve been having some issues with my car and the dealer it’s been at and haven’t had time. It was at the dealer for two weeks for a rattle, then once they fixed it and I brought it home, I notice they reinstalled the trim incorrectly that is causing the speakers to shake with high bass. Taking it back today. Hopefully this headache will be behind me soon and I can discover more codes for you guys I apologize for the delay.

Nice! My buddy with a S7 was able to make his DRL's brighter, OMG! At 100%, it was so bright...he actually had to bring it down to 80%.

Hi everyone. Does anyone know if there is any coding to disable the headlights while having the “Entry/Exit lighting” feature turned on? I noticed turning the feature off also turns off the lighting around the door handles..

Thanks

Well, the entry/exit assist turns on (I think) the DRLs and some other exterior lights around the door handles.. What I’m interested in is either turning off the DRLs or using a lower setting.. Essentially, front of my car where I park in my driveway points directly in neighbor’s bedroom window, and I’d like to avoid that while still getting some exterior lighting
Thanks

I’ll look into it Rick but I make no promises. I have to go into the Coding and try and locate the feature and they’re not always labeled so obviously. I’ll do my best! :)

I was wondering if it's possible to get different color LED's with the coding. I have a premium plus car which doesn't have the lighting plus package. But, I noticed when I open car or lock it there Leds on the doors are red but after that I only have white. If it can be red maybe it's possible to get other colors through coding?

I have a Prestige model that already has the different colors. I can maybe poke around and see if there’s anything I can do. A change that popular I’m sure OBDEleven would’ve released an app for it already charging like 100+ credits.

Is there a way to boost the garage door opener range? I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that can open the garage from the ally but our S4 has to get really up close to the door. There were a few fluke times I had to get out and use the key pad as it refused to open.

I've found that if you clear out and re-do the opener pairing (with it right in front of the mirror glass), that improves it. Another thing I've noticed is that it works best with a quick press and release (not a press and hold) of the button in the car. My BMW requires you to hold it for several seconds, the Audi a quick press/release.

It still isn't awesome for range though. I can only get a couple houses away for range (if that).

I was wondering about that. I have the full colors, but thinking they probably have the same RGB LED strips in all vehicles, and then control it on the car side. It's possible that you don't have a module that allows variable control off all 3 colors though. In your case, you just need to turn on red, or turn on all 3 at once.

Thanks for the insight. I actually cant remember how I paired it initially. I believe I used the learn button on the unit itself and not one of the clicker boxes. I do remember I was sitting in the garage right underneath the opener.

I also read on another forum that most garage doors use a 315 Mhz frequency. It also appears that our keys use a 315 Mhz frequency to link with this car. This can apparently cause interference when trying to get it to open. Some suggesting getting frequency box that changes the garage door frequency. That's where I got lost.....

Ill try the quick one touch on the button. With my Jeep I know holding for a few seconds works better so maybe that's where I was going wrong too

I had an older opener that was brutal for range, my newer Chamberlain is vastly better. I can't take credit for the quick press of the button though. I was holding it with bad results, and another forum member pointed out that quick is better.

What do you mean turn on red or turn on all 3 at once? In my mmi I only have options to change the brightness of the LED. But, like I mentioned the led's on the door panel strip turn red when I unlock or lock car (then they go to white few seconds later)

Sorry, speaking on how they probably connect it behind the scenes. It's probably 3-LED RGB. White is all 3 connected at once, red, just red connected. Purely speaking figuratively from an engineering standpoint, with no insight into how Audi actually does it.

Unlikely. The device needs to be able to access the coding of the car. To my knowledge only OBDEleven, VAG-COM and Carista have the ability to tweak values.

Not to take this topic off track — If you have a purple learn button on your opener, you’ll struggle with range and interference. I put in Liftmaster 850LM receiver on my two openers which upgrades to yellow learn buttons (Security+ 2.0) - runs about $40 at Amazon. I posted a much more detailed write up in both the B9 S4 forum and the S5/RS5 forum over at the other site about my experience. I get at least 750’ range now from my S4

I posted a much more detailed write up in both the B9 S4 forum and the S5/RS5 forum over at the other site about my experience. I get at least 750’ range now from my S4

I saw your writeup on the other forum! Thanks for the detailed instructions and the how too. I may do that or just switch over to one of these new smart home device openers. My opener still works but I know its an older model. I used to be a don't fix it if it aint broke but these smart home devices are starting to get me to break my old motto.

Anyways back on track with the tread. Hope more options come from the OBDEleven. Would be nice to get a sticky on here with how too as more coding options become known.

If your opener works, I wouldn't change it. Where our house is located the older opener was a black hole for signal. I'd have the clicker up to the glass on the door, and then the opener would grab it. Installed a newer 2.0+ one, and it was a million times better, opening the door a block away.

This is absolutely all you need...if you want to write your own software ;) I have this exact same $8 dongle (I have the Bluetooth version though) and my own Android app can do anything OBDeleven can do; the standardized protocol bus (OBDII) that this device can read and write to enables the ability, not the other way around, utilizing it is all OBDeleven is doing. It's worth mentioning the amount of Java required to make this happen is NOT trivial (my app is 20K+ lines alone and that's with a shitty interface that only an engineer like me could love), but technically it is possible!

Technically, I came up with the idea, designed and wrote the app for a very large and well known organization in the automotive space based the ELM327 hardware spec (which is what everything in this space runs off of today, www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM327DS.pdf) back in 2012, and my own app is just the early alpha work I did for them in my own time and kept on my own machines. I'm an Android/Java engineer, so I started with the spec and built out a framework based on the concept of managers of thread safe I/O runnables that could establish a Bluetooth I/O connection on one thread and read/execute commands on a pool of separate threads. It works just fine for this type of interface, but is not an insignificant amount of code. That's the fun part though! :)

I have an iPhone but my mechanic has an Android so we used his phone...

I did the following changes noted above:
Turn Single 5 times
Range limitation change
DRLs on w Turn Signal
Disable seat belt chime and logo
Double beep on locking
Turn off auto locks when you shift out of Park

Auto Off:
Changed the A/C comfort param for start/stop function from Value: 5 to Value: 0

The good news is the auto off is disabled. However I don't like is you get the A w/ the circle slash at stop lights and in Park even in Sport mode, but it goes off as soon as you drive away. I'm sure I'll get used to it and it's less annoying that the auto stop and maybe it will remind me we beat the system :)

I also thought about increasing the heat in my steering wheel, but since spring is around the corner, I may deal with that next winter. In reality, I wasn't sure how much to increase it by

I could not find:
How to leave the fogs on with the high beams
Turn on the beep when you unlock the car (I think I found this one tonight on the forum)
Enter addresses in MMI at speed

I may go back and enable the gear selection in D/S as well.

Any other ideas?

I had most of those in my S4.. But came across this one and applied it:
Turn off range limiter for comfort window system
46 - Central Module Comfort System
Advanced Coding->comfort_operation_range_limitation->not active

That allows fob to open/close windows and sunroof without needing to be within 6’ of the car. Will come in handy in summer to air out the car when I’m walking across parking lot.

I've been searching the internet and not finding anything for the B9 S4 re OBDEleven mods for the exhaust - sounds like there may be something for VWs. I did find a UK forum where they have just unplugged the connections at the back of the exhaust - they stay open all the time and they aren't getting any dash codes, however it does, apparently store a code in the computer.

You cannot. It's different wiring. However, deAutoLed has some good LEDs to swap. I have red interior and changed the footwells to red.

So have used OBDeleven to disable start/stop via adaptation - works great EXCEPT if i use the PARK button with heavy foot on brake, the auto start/stop will kick in (with accompanying green S/S dashboard light) - any thought on why it would work while driving but not if I use the PARK button on the shifter?

I tried a bunch of different ways to reproduce what you're seeing, and I couldn't get it to reproduce.. With Drive Select set to DYNAMIC, the HVAC on, and the transmission in D - the only thing I would see would be the white A with the slash.. Holding the brake down hard and hitting P did the same thing. The only way I was able to get it to turn off was by turning the HVAC system off.. As soon as I pressed the OFF button for the HVAC, the icon changed to the green A and stopped the car. Thats expected because the mod doesn't actually disable auto SS -- it just sets the priority for the climate control system too high for it to engage.

Maybe you should check the value while connected to the car.. (08) Air Conditioning, Adaptation, A/C comfort parameter for start-stop function. It should be set to 0. Factory default is 5.
Did you use the pre-made recipe, or did you change the adaptation manually? I changed manually.

Mirror dip doesn’t require a Coding. That’s actually a function already available. There’s a process to it in the manual. Something to do with putting your car in reverse then adjusting your mirror and then it retains the info for future use. That’s not the whole procedure so don’t quote me on that, but it is available without coding.

I believe the credit on OBD11 allow you to use "apps" that can make the mods that you want. It's easier i guess to use that "apps" if you didn't know how to do it manually. Luckily a search on the forums for obd11 mods yeild good results that you can actually do manually on obd11 without using the credits.

Highly unlikely. Don’t quote me on this but the simple changes don’t make any changes that could result in warranty issues. Now there may be some changes you could make that could screw up a control unit if you don’t know what you’re doing and that could void warranty.

They probably could see it if they really wanted to but highly doubt they would. Even then your just changing variables that are already available and that are already changed for other parts of the world. Your using something they designed that simply not activated.

With that being said my previous S3 had its Haldex replaced. Part of the process was flashing the car. All of my changes were lost and I had to go implement them again, but they never said anything about it.

I actually have a question of my own. Does anyone know how to make the recirculation button memory so I don't have to push it each time?

I tried to check out the exhaust valves open that was referenced for the S3 and the Engine module does not have any labels present for any of the Bytes listed. A few of the bits are checked within some of the Bytes, but no labels to know what they do just yet. Didn't want to tinker without knowing what they do.

The S3 and S4 have different ECU’s and different modules...which will be labeled differently. Usually similar programming will apply to cars on the same platform. So the A4, A5, S4, S5, Q5 and SQ5 should all be labeled the same in theory.

You don't need to "remove" the valves, you just unplug the electrical connector at the valve. And you can always plug them back in. I really can't imagine unplugging them would cause any type of warranty issue... lease or not.

I just remembered I had this bookmarked from a B9 A5 thread. I'm curious if it would work for us, but I haven't tried it:

"Did you try this :

Stop Start button Settings

[Security Access – 16]
Enter code given, 20113, [Do It!]

[Adaption – 10]
Channel 34 [Read]
Read Default value
Add 32 for ‘remember last setting’
Add 64 to Reverse the LED status, so light = Stop Start Active (Default is light = Stop Start Off)
Subtract 4 to ‘default to Off’

So add 60 is the best option for me.

so add 60 to turn it off each engine start and invert LED in the switch (LED off with SS off, LED on with SS on)"

Yes, should similarly apply as well. You may actually have more coding available than the B9's do. At least more labelling for bits within the bytes to know what certain bits are for.

It'll stick to S if engine and transmission are set to dynamic. As soon as you throw it in gear it'll go straight to S. Unless I was drunk and I did some Hocus pocus with OBD11 but that works for me.

You mean so they come on all the time with the DRL? I'm not at home, but its something called "Scandinavian lights". I believe in central electronics, there is a coding section to enable the DRL turning a turn signal (which also links in rear led strips).

I tried searching for this answer, but came up short. Is it possible to program the car to move the driver seat to position 2 when shutting the car off and to position 1 when starting it up? I use the memory 1 and 2 buttons, but it just feels hokey. There has to be a better way. I raise the seat up a bit and tilt it slightly forward for easy entry/exit and also an attempt to save the thigh bolster. But, as you probably know, it's a process. The car has to be off and the door has to be open, for it to move by just one press. Otherwise, you have to hold the button the whole time. Then it''s the same process getting back in. And, if it's raining/snowing outside, you don't want to keep the door open, so you sit there holding the button while the seat moves back into position. I just want to press the stop button when I park and have the seat go to the 2 position and automatically go to the 1 position when I get in and start the car. I know the manual says "For safety reasons, the seat setting can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stationary to reduce the risk of an accident.", but plenty of other vehicles move the seat upon start/stop.

Thanks for linking the article. After reading it, I find it funny that they find the stock exhaust to be too loud "The sound of the exhaust was a little too loud and intrusive in the cabin". What they're describing as a "soundaktor" is the same as what they implement in the Golf R which is very noticeable however according to Audi's literature on the engine, it's not identified as a component (unless I overlooked the material) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GruL4CARAbo_0WL8zUZc5usiiT1IXD7M/view

Even a code that doesn’t necessarily throw a check engine or warning light?

I think that's configurable through the settings in the MMI. Mine does it, and the only changes I've did to that module is:
Module 46: Central Module Comfort System -> Long coding -> central_locking_system_lock_unlock_at_engine_runni ng: Old value: not active New value: active (allows you to lock the door with the engine running)
Central Module Comfort System -> Long coding -> comfort_operation_window_lifter_button: Old value: not active New value: active (allows the windows to full auto-up when the switch is fully pulled up)
Central Module Comfort System -> Long coding -> comfort_operation_roof_button: Old value: not active New value: active (allows the roof to be controlled with the fob (when you hold the lock/unlock button).

One interesting thing I noticed the other day is if you keep pressing the lock button on the fob (and all the windows are closed), the sunshade closes as well.

Is this any different from just running the sound in dynamic mode?

wires
01-14-2019, 05:23 AM
Dynamic will add in the fake engine sounds as well. I ended up coding the soundaktor to a reduced level, but I do think that disables it when it's volume isn't 100% (you can set 0-100% as a level). Only downfall is you can be doing 60MPH on the highway in 4th gear (if you manual shift) at 4000RPM, but the cabin is so quiet you don't hear the engine racing. With the soundaktor on, you'd get that audible feedback.

Also i am mostly interested in the sound reduction in comfort mode with the soundaktor turned off.

It made a difference during acceleration for sure. When I would be talking to my wife over the phone and she would get on it I could really hear it over the phone. Now with it turned off I can still hear it but not nearly as much.

I've had it turned off for awhile now and cant remember how it sounded during just cruising. I'm not sure how much volume is piped in during steady rpm driving which I think is what your problem is based on the other thread I saw you make. I can turn it back on and do some checking for you later this week.

I can say the car to me is super quite with little to no exhaust noise when I drove it the other day but then again I don't have the condition you do. Is your main issue during steady cruising or is it when you take off from a stop and accelerate up to speed?

Pattyballs
01-21-2019, 09:07 AM
Thanks for the reply! Yea, driving around town at low speed is great in the car. My main issue is when i am sitting around 50-60mph and the RPM's sit at like 2k-2250. I am thinking about getting this to turn off the soundaktor in addition to a few other fixes i plan to have done(add more sound deadening in the trunk and minor tweaks to the exhaust system) and i am hoping i can remove that drone that bothers me.

wires
01-21-2019, 09:43 AM
I don't think the Soundaktor is active "comfort" mode or in individual mode when "comfort" for engine sounds is selected.

I tried to reduce the level, but from my limited testing, it appears to be either on (100% level) or off (99% and lower). Right now I set it to 66%, and there is no difference between comfort or dynamic for sound.

The rest of the sound you hear is the growl from the actual exhaust. Comfort will close one exhaust tip so it will be quieter than dynamic.

Pattyballs
01-21-2019, 10:13 AM

I actually disconnected them already, and FYI you don't have to put the car in dynamic mode to do that. It is my understanding that you can shut the car off and unplug them and it just automatically faults all 4 valves open. Its just a soft code it throws. Car sounds much better below 3k RPMS than at stock. Also I plugged them back in not all the way to the original plug and just used electrical tape to seal it. I don't think ive seen many people do that but i think its the best way, i could be wrong. Not sure if it affects gas mileage or not but i might have lost an mpg. With Dynamic sport mode the valves open and close at different RPMs based on the ECU...they aren't always open.

Exactly what Jareds941 said. They only open up at about 3k rpm. When you unplug them, they are always open even at lower RPMs.

The camera issue is fixed with the new MMI software updates. But it also takes away your Google maps so.....
On a thread relevant topic, there's a new obd11 coming out, and I'm actually about an hour away from Voltas IT, so I think I'm gonna walk in there and see if I can get it before the US release.... The only question is, is it any different from the older version?

Can the OBDeleven disable DSR (Driver Steering Recommendation)?

On VAG COM it is under 44-electric steering assist module > coding > long coding > byte 0 > bit 4 (uncheck box for "Driver Steering Recommendation").

Wondering if I can go this route and save a few bucks.

The OBD11 allows you to long code byte by byte, bit by bit, just like VCDS (I have it as well). So, I would think it can do what you want.

I think its only possible when you jailbreak the iPhone. It’s purely apple blocking other apps, nothing to do with Audi itself.

Exactly what Jareds941 said. They only open up at about 3k rpm. When you unplug them, they are always open even at lower RPMs.

Not to jack the OBD11 thread, but do you get more burbles and pops when you unplug them?

I recently got the OBD11 Pro. Changed a few things and not sure if they are taking when I finish saving the settings. For example, the double beep for locking the car is not happening. I locked the car after making the changes, expecting that it would register. Then go to unlock and lock again and no beeps for either.

Not sure if I need to start er up to get the settings actually registered. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Figured out two more useful changes

DRL’s on with Turn Signal

09 - Central Electrics
Long Coding
“sl_at_drl”
Change from “not_active” to “active”
Press and hold green check mark to accept

I tried this today on my 2019 using OBDeleven but when I went to check

“sl_at_drl” was already set to active, the car is new and no one has touched anything on it. I did code the amber side markers off using the OBDeleven app.

Anyone have any input, hoping to keep the DRL’s on with the turn signal and get rid of the wink.

Unfortunately all these codes have been tested and proven on the 2018 model. If there were any changes to the 2019 model, which is really weird that there would be, then you would just have to go through the options and see what other relative figures could be changed to make that modification. It should all be on that same screen so it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. Goodluck!

Not all cars support the beep on unlock, for some reason. (Mine doesn't either.)

“sl_at_drl” means rear lights on with DRL !!!

DRL on with turn signal is:

I went ahead and broke down to get an Android tablet and just made the order for the obdeleven. I’ve read through this thread, but it will be fun to see what I can monkey around with.

I think the big one I wouldn’t mind would be the auto seat back deal after the motor is off as I’m a goon...

Along those lines is there a list of common “changes” somewhere? I’m pretty much ecstatic with the car as it sits and nothing really I feel the need to change up, but kinda fun to see what’s possible...

EDIT: I’m an idiot. There is a nice list in the first post. DUH!

Really dumb question as I’m trying to learn the difference between “apps” and long coding. Is an “app” used every time a change is made that is not done through the “long coding” option in the menu by controller?

I’ve got a pretty extensive telematics and general IT background, but just trying to figure out the rules of engagement for this device. Thanks!

You don't have to go into the coding to change anything. I personally prefer to go through the coding process so I can learn the different modules and possibly find something else fun to try.

So that makes perfect sense. However, the 2 changes I made above didn't cost me any credits yet I did it through the "easy" way.

I figured out how to get free credits through the ads and such, but I'm still confused on the part of what is and isn't an "app". It says I've not spent any credits ever, so I'm not sure what's up. For reference I have the pro version.

I guess my point is, all this stuff is just the manipulation of PIDs. What they are defining as "apps" are really just adjustment of the PID variable and the code in the "app" is merely making that process easier through already identifying which bytes need to be changed. However, I'm not really seeing the delineation of code for the simplification of the change, and the code required to even change the bytes of the PID. There does not appear to be a standardized language or operating system (other than just the CANBUS) by which the PIDs are manipulated, so code was required to even allow that part. Thus my confusion.

It doesn't really matter as I'm not too concerned while the vehicle is in warranty and I don't get annoyed with most functions, but it's just interesting to me.

Made another quick change that really helped. I’ve not liked how bright the cluster is and with a little searching, found what to change from another forum:

Adaptation
Control unit: 17 Dash Board
Name: dimming_characteristic_curve_adjustment_middle_dis play_main_field
Values:
Y2:
Old value: 2
New value: 0
Y1:
Old value: 2
New value: 0

Now the dimmer switch just below the heads up display gets both the main cluster and the center display to be more in line and the main cluster is more dim at the lowest setting. Much better.

I think you're over-complicating it. The "apps" are basically like a LMGTFY code. It just puts all the pieces together in a simple package if you dont want to go into the schematics and change bytes in bits yourself. Theres really not much you can see other than "off/on" coding when you are making the changes.

Gotta try this one.

The apps are basically scripts that automate the coding of the bits and bytes versus coding it step by step manually. This is more like using the VCDS.

What drive mode are you on when you start the car? in dynamic i think one is open but not all, and when you put it into gear on S you can hear it open up with a deeper tone. If you play around with the drive modes between comfort and dynamic in park you should be able to hear the difference.

It’s in the owner’s manual and in the MMI. Takes about 30 seconds to do. I can’t recall the exact steps but you have a few options on what that button can do and drive mode is one.

That’s precisely what mine does and I’m in the same boat as you in that I change drive modes frequently. I use the zip of Dynamic leaving downtown, but prefer Comfort for the straight freeway sections. When folks start driving like idiots around me (frequent here) on the freeway, I use Auto. I also have Individual set up for a mix.

Anyway, look in your owners manual. I will show how to program the button there. Or fiddle around with the MMI and you’ll find it.
