View Full Version : Delayed ignition after turning key

When I go to start the car, I turn the key, and there is a 2-3 second delay before the engine actually begins to crank. The delay gets longer if the car has been sitting for a while. Anyone come across this? Initial talk with my local service dept was that it might be the starter relay, but just thought i'd check on here to see anyone had dealt with this.

Its the starter. It is a common issue on these. In fact, mine is currently in the shop having the starter replaced for this exact reason.

Just replaced my starter relay yesterday.. 56$ from autozone. Haven't had any problems yet but it's not been long enough to say for sure. Make sure you get a wiper puller while you're there and it's a 25 minute job.

Thanks guys - I guess i'll start with the relay for 56 bucks rather than go right for the starter. couple of (probably) dumb questions - wheres the relay located ,and what do I need the wiper puller for?

starter solenoid is stuck/hard to move after sitting for a while, I don't think you can get it separately from the starter.
had the same problem with my S4, I had to hold the key in the "crank" position for around 10 seconds sometimes.

Question did you notice it started happening as the weather got colder?

Cold weather will cause this from my experience.

Yep.

I have been dealing with this exact issue for about 6 months. Now that it has gotten colder it takes significantly longer to start. I got to the point last week where I was cycling the key and holding it for 30+ seconds before it would finally turn over.

Definitely worse as the weather is colder, but it was still an issue during summer months... just not as pronounced.

Where exactly is the starter relay and when you bought a new relay, was it purple? I tried going that route and could not find the location of where the starter relay is, ended up just getting the starter replaced.

it is the relay that connects between your ignition wire to the starter. It is under the ECU. Yes it was purple and the numbers on the outside were different but it works just fine.
I'm glad someone will be benefiting from my experience, here is the video I used, it works perfect. The starter relay is the one all the way closest to the windshield.

Interesting thread. When I had the same issue the starter was a known problem on the inter webs. Changed the started and the issue was gone. Maybe either could be the culprit?

I've dealt with this exact issue. I tried the relay with no luck. It seemed to get better, but it's hard to tell given that the problem gets worse with time. A starter replacement fixed the problem.

To those that have replaced the starter how much, did you pay to have it done? Does it make sense to buy the starter yourself? Is there a preferred starter other than OEM?

I just bought a valeo from rockauto for about 200 shipped with no core charge. To install you have to take out the passenger motor mount I believe. I am getting it installed by someone for 220.

Ive been having this issue for some time...
but for me he key had to be in the ignition for like 5 min before she fired up...
Replaced the battery, which seemed to solve the problem (4 months ago) but it seems to be starting to do it again...
This only happens on the first start of the day!

I had the same issue when I had mine. It was the starter relay. It was a quick swap and I never had the issue again.

I having the same scenario, changed the battery last year, no problems this year until it started to get colder. Also, only the first start of the day. Some mornings it takes 2 minutes to start, this morning no problems, no delay, totally random. So the question now is it the relay or the starter?

Haha, my vote is starter (it probably the reason why I got the car, the PO replaced the battery and I guess he did not want to go further). It is nerve racking when you put your key in and nothing happen. The wait time getting longer & longer.
BTW, my car has 160K when I got it so it's about time.

Is there a preferred starter other than OEM?If you're inclined, you can buy an OEM Valeo for around $200 and put it in yourself in a few hours. It's pretty straight forward, just requires removing the sway bar and motor mount. I had exact symptoms that worsened in cold weather, even being parked in a garage. Replaced my starter one night and haven't looked back since.

I think my 08 Audi RS4 just started having this issue.

I had this issue last year for about 8 months. Was lazy to get the starter and it went away on its own. Hasn't done the delay in a while. It was same symptoms for me, delayed ignition after the car had been sitting for at least 7 hours

sticky starter solenoid unstuck itself in all cases of starting somehow

IIRC sometimes (rarely) in real hot weather, it would even take a few tries and about 45 seconds until it actually started

I did the starter as everybody told me to and it didn't fix my issue - I was very frustrated because that was an expensive fix. It wound up being my battery. Even though autozone AND my independent mechanic tested it and it was fine, getting a new battery fixed my issues completely.

Well that sucks.

That is interesting that it was your battery.

My car was sitting in the body shop for a long time during Covid. So, long that my battery went dead and they bought me a new one.

Then I went to live in Cali, Colombia for four months and before I left I set the alarm. That was a mistake because I came back to a discharged Bosche AGM battery which was still under warranty.

So, I got a new AGM battery at Costco.

One negative about getting a new battery is that the car is "not ready" for an emissions test until it gets through the "drive cycle"

I need to get through inspection soon ... once i get past that I will investigate this issue more.

This just started last week and it has been between 70-90 degrees here. I may need to take a look under the car.
