View Full Version : New Liqui-Moly Oil: Molygen 5w-40?
Does anyone have an opinion regarding Liqui-Moly MOLYGEN engine oil? Thoughts?
FROM ECS:
This new generation of oil is made with a quality synthetic base and includes a molecular friction modifier for reduced friction and wear. It also glows under UV light so leaks can be easily traced!
This unique oil contains a fluorescent green chemical friction modifier to smooth out hard metal surfaces, reducing overall engine wear and heat due to friction. Tests have shown a reduction in friction coefficient of as much as 15%! MolyGen oil is also a great choice for modern turbocharged engines which produce much more heat.
Technical Specifications:
Density at 15°C - .855kg/cm3
Viscosity at 40°C - 80.7mm²/s
Viscosity at 100°C - 14.0mm²/s
Viscosity Index - 180
Flash Point - 230°C
Recommended for the following oil and manufacturer specifications:
ACEA A3
ACEA B4
API SN
API CF
BMW Longlife-01
MB 229.5
Porsche A40
Renault RN 0700
VW 502.00
VW 505.00

Liqui-moly always makes great lubricants. Will be interesting to hear about this one.

Moly makes good stuff but why go out of your way and spend extra dollhairs when you can get a fantastic oil for fewer dollhairs from the shelf at walmart or amazon?

The only important number (which I don't see in the specs) is HTHS. This indicates the friction resistance of the motor oil @150°C.

Interesting fact, so I looked up two of my favorite 0w40s:
Mobil 1 (HTHS)- 3.6 / Liqui Moly and Motul also share this HTHS
AMSOIL (HTHS)- 3.9
I know there are many other factors that play into this and is an age old discussion (carbon buildup is just a way of life with these beasts). There was an oil analysis/comparison (https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=893022&fpart=1) that was done around when these cars were new and the tester had concluded that Renewable Lubricants 5w40 was the best (link included). However, I haven't heard much else since or anyone after coming to understand these cars at high milage running this Bio-Syn oil.

Speaking of, Amazon has it for $22.88 for a 5 quart jug. Wallmart for $22 in-store as well. I've always gotten it there and I just picked up 2 jugs.

But then you don't get the entertainment associated with going to Walmart.

In the EU the recommended OE oil is Castrol Edge 5w30 and the HTHS on that is miserable. Last I checked it was barely 3.0. I used Motul 8100+ 5w30 for some time in between and now went to US spec 5w40.
I had a look at Millers oil and what they started bringing to the market recently and I opted for Millers Oils CFS 5w-40 NT+. They have a decent HTHS, a bit better than Motul 300V race oil, but the fact which got me hooked is the TBN (Total Base Number), which exceeds any other manufacturer i checked by A LOT and is very good for our carbon rich high-revving engines. A higher base value of the oil will help it stay non-acidic for a longer time even tough it gets constantly mixed/contaminated by exhaust blow-by (which happens in any crank case, even if the blow-by is minimal).
They use it in a lot of race engines and I figured it would be an ideal oil for our carbon filled motors. Here's also a nice longevity study they did with a racing Beetle http://performanceracingoils.com/content/PDF/longevity_case_study.pdf

I use Renewable Lubricants (RLI) 5W40. So far it has been great. Analysis has been historically good, although I don't do it anymore. What I noticed most is less soot on the tailpipes, and it I don't have to add much at all for a 5000 mile OCI which sure was not the case with Motul which I have tried twice. It was recommended I could go much longer on the OCI with the analysis findings I was getting for the RLI. The link posted from BITOG is a long but informative read.

What does this data mean to the average consumer?

For the higher TBN this means that the oil will take far longer exposure to blow-by exhaust gases before it starts becoming acidic and looses it's lubrication capabilities.
Regarding the race-study with the Porsche, in practice you can equate:
1 race km = 25 road km
So they did a total of 2500km (1600miles) on track. Which would be the equivelant of 62500km (40000miles) on the road, on one oil change. And the oil was still good on the last analysis.

I just picked up the oil change kit of the molygen from ECS: so far, so good.... best I can say. I've used Castrol, Lubri-Moly, even Car Quest in a pinch.

The Shaeffers 5W-40 that I've been using for 5+ years has a High Temperature High Shear (HTHS) Viscosity (302°F/150°C) of 4.5........

I use Millers Nano drive 5w-40 aswell and it works very well for my RS4, better then Castrol Edge 5w-30 LL... The car doesen’t burn as much oil on cold startups and have never filled up the oil level between serivces!
Can really recommend that oil! Look at Opie oils on ebay for good prices!
