View Full Version : Dinan piggyback chip

anyone tried Dinan's piggyback chip (https://www.dinancars.com/product/d440-0046-dinantronics-sport-performance-tuner-for-vag-adx-v2-20l-turbo-engines/?series=&mid=/)?
was wondering if there might be potential issues with the way it 'cheats' the ecu....
i have a 2011 A5 2.0t fsi & do not want a stage 1 tune, just a little bump in performance while maintaining reliability & engine life.
will be used in combo with 034 hfc (https://store.034motorsport.com/high-flow-catalytic-converter-b8-audi-a4-a5-q5-2-0-tfsi.html).

yep I have it. Took all of 2 min to install it. The app isn't great, could use improvement but you can change settings on it which is nice. For $299 I like it. Its nothing crazy, but for a little extra oomph it does whats advertised. Id recommend it if you are looking for just a little extra, add it and forget it.

thank you for the feedback, SubZ05!
how long have you had it installed?
did you consider the Neuspeed (http://www.neuspeed.com/161/11/0/3307/641013-neuspeed-power-module.html)version?
my brother-in-law worked with the the guys at Dinan, 25 or more years ago.....man time flies!
had lots of their stuff on my old 3 series coupe years ago.....
interesting that they may be delving into VW/Audi product line.....

did a search & saw your comments on another thread.....good stuff.
i think as soon as i finish my brake upgrade (A5 > S5) & git the hfc installed i will give the Dinan a try.
if i am not pleased, i could just put it on The Wife's 2014 A4 or sell it.....
thank you, again, subzero05!

Installed this and after one day my check engine light turned on, couldn't find my code scanner so I just unplugged the unit for now. Any one have something similar happen?
I just moved and my scanner is buried somewhere in boxes. [emoji19]

Also interested in the code.
Additionally, the Dinan unit specifically says that it works with the b8/b8.5 allroad but the Neuspeed says their unit is a no for the allroad. Anyone have insight on that?

Well, after unplugging the module and plugging it back in the check engine light went away,
I tried every setting and I think the race setting set it off, so with that I've ran 1 setting each day to see if I throw any codes, stock, sport, sport+, and race. Currently on sport+ (3psi+) no codes yet,
Still haven't found my code scanner [emoji19]

From what I've read on other threads by searching this code, I'm directing my attention to the diverted valve,
Anybody know if my b8 has the old diaphragm design diverted valve?

so other than the race setting , the dinan unit seems to be working good for you as or now?. I haven't had any issues w/ mine to date. I have 91 octane here so I have only had it set at sport + , never put it into race as of yet

Yes that is correct,
I also installed a turbo muffler delete after the code had cleared the first time. Still running good.
My new DV and blow off adapter will be here tomorrow, should I hold off on installing those till I iron out any more issues with the dinan unit?

The first time I got any codes it was completely stock, just the dinan unit alone.
Now I've added the turbo muffler delete and the blow off adapter along with a new DV. Seems to be working fine.

I only did a few pulls at each setting (stock, sport, sport+, race) but with crappy weather approaching here in Dallas, I didn't spend much time messing with it unfortunately. I did find that my OnePlus 5 with Android Oreo did not work with the app - it didn't see the chip in the bluetooth menu. Luckily I have a backup old Moto X that is still on some older version and it seemed to work fine. As others have noted, the boost monitor in the app is super slow to respond so I was using Torque on my other phone via the OBDII port for boost measurements. I am not quite sure how its supposed to be set up so I am not confident saying what the actual boost levels are in each mode but it did seem to increase boost pressure with each increasing setting. No CEL yet. Butt dyno says the car is fast as frig as always. I need to spend more time on more open and forgiving roads to really tell, though that probably wont be this weekend if we're getting ice and well below freezing temps. I will update when I can.

tominabox1
01-03-2018, 07:46 AM
I mounted mine to the wire bundle going to the headlights. On my 3rd pic the bundle I mounted on is at like 7 o-clock on my red circle. The cabling for the module is fairly long. I didn't want to mount on the intake pipe because I'm not sure how hot it gets.

I'll chime in....
Lots of vendors are dropping prices on the # D440-0046. This module basically fools the car into increasing boost via a few different performance modes. There's valet/stock/sport/sport+/race. Boost levels range from -2 psi to +4 psi. It's shipped in sport+ mode and ready to use once installed. Depending on your year, the connection ports are different (one has a keyway the other does not) so you need to check before buying. They make a module for each version.
Install was super easy. I'd say 5 min max, most time spent connecting the zip ties together that attach it to your intake tube. It does not come with any instructions so you'll want to download the .pdf that includes a walkthrough for the app as well. There are two different .pdf's so get the longer one. The app allows you to toggle between the different modes. It also includes a digital boost gauge that operates via bluetooth. The gauge is okay at best really as readings lag behind at times. The bluetooth connection is sketchy while driving and connects/disconnects randomly. I only use the app to select the different modes then put my phone away.
I had an APR tune on my 2006 A4 with first gen 2.0t. It was a lot more aggressive and seemed to confuse the transmission at takeoff or during a hard downshift when passing. I also had fuel delivery issues with it. This Dinan tune is softer and doesn't seem to stress the car nearly as much. I noticed the low RPM/speed turbo lag almost gone, she's a lot more responsive on downshifting and pulls longer when passing traffic. I've only had it in sport+ mode as the roads here have been pretty nasty. I'll try race when things melt. There was mid-grade in the tank at install and the car performed okay. Once I filled up with 93 it really woke up. This module makes the car perform as it should have from the factory. I'll be interested to see how an intake works together with it this spring.
Overall, this is the tune I was looking for. Easy install, worry free fun that's really changed the car. My commute is 76 miles round trip every day so I'm in the car a lot. It's nice having a reliable tune that's made my drive more fun. Is it the most aggressive or highest hp/tq player in the tune game? No. But I'm totally okay with dialing it back a tad from the others for long term reliability and piece of mind. I was fortunate enough to get mine for $170 shipped but there are other vendors out there for around $200 still.
Best bang for the buck module out there!

Just plugged in my Dinan module and went for a short ride. Noticed an improved linear feel during normal acceleration. Was not able to make any wot runs, but lower rpm boost is improved.
I connected via the Dinan app, and agree it is poor. One question I had...unit comes in Sport+ mode and tried to change to sport, back to Sport+, but unable to detect the change via the app. Does the app provide any feedback of switching between modes?
As I pulled into the driveway, I thought about that second limb in that big oak tree.
Edit: Figured it out, was not using App correctly. Had to ensure lower toggle was in correct position and noted incremental psi boost is displayed below boost gauge. Thanks JLAllroad.

Bill,
If Tom’s boost psi numbers are correct, Dinan module adds 3psi boost in stock+ and 4psi in race mode, so backing into stock boost ~16-17 psi?? Not sure if this is correct or not.

yep, so feedback i am getting here & elsewhere is ~ 13 psi in stock config for the 1.8 & 2.0 K03 turbos.....

LOL exactly. After I posted that I went looking for proof but posted numbers on here are all over the place.
edit: looked some more. I'm beginning to think the actual base average is around 10 psi which would lead me to believe Torque Pro is not giving me accurate readings but the Dinan app (slow as it is) is providing realistic max boost numbers (14-16 psi) directly from the MAP sensor in Sport+/Race mode. It may be a calibration issue with Torque. I never could figure out what the setting is supposed to be (-14.7,0, or +14.7). Interesting that Torque shows vacuum all the time in idle and Dinan does not, maybe that's the key I'm looking for.
wkhanna
01-15-2018, 06:13 AM
NA engines should have negative manifold pressure at idle....
....but i have no experience with turbos...
when running Torque Pro, my boost pressure reads negative at idle.....which seems reasonable...to me....
i was just hoping to get a boost pressure accuracy of +/- 0.5 psi if possible.....
i realize i only paid $20 for the module & $5 for the app.....
i will keep reading up the app settings & post some log of results later.....

i think we want to use the MAF config for our cars in the OBD2 adaptor settings / boost calculation method....
i believe the MAF setting use the data as seen by the car's MAF....?
the off-set (-14.7,0, or +14.7) is for compensating on the how the manufacturer defined their scale on their software.
if it is set incorrectly your reading would be off by either +/-29.4 or +/- 14.7...i think....?

Went back to MAP, and put +14.1 in the settings for an adjustment and saw 20.4 psi on the way to work this morning (18F ambient air) in Race. I still think that's way off. My guess is it should be around 15 at most.

I don't know what to believe. I watched the Dynan meter today on the way to work in Stock mode and it peaked at 15.6 psi. I had my other phone watching the ECU in MAP mode with +14.7 or whatever in the settings and it peaked over 20 psi. As slow as it is, I get the impression that the Dynan is more real, although it too seems to be higher than I would expect in stock mode.

i am trying to figure out if the boost reading from Torque Pro is actually from a sensor or is the 'demand' signal from the ECU......

i would be curious to see your Torque Pro readings when scale off-set is set to 0 instead of +14.7.....
we really need to manifold pressure readings directly from the effing manifold via an analog gauge so we have true benchmark....!!!! grrrrr....
i wish i had my podi guage installed......dammut!!!!

I did some more reading and the type of fuel you put in the settings somehow impacts the boost readings. For most US fuels its E10. (unless you run exclusively E85 of course). Also important is engine displacement. I put 5L just to see what happened and it gave drastically different results, so its doing a lot more on the Torque side than just reading a sensor. I have not dialed in the correct value yet but I suspect with E10 set it will be closer to reality.
tominabox1
01-19-2018, 02:47 PM
Ran it with fuel set to E20 based on the reading of ethenol fuel percentage reading of 18.4%. Peak reading of 18psi which is a little more realistic if you think the peak stock is 14. I still think it's not quite right but we may be on the right track.

It's a great addition. As for the underboost CEL... I'm going to keep an eye on it but it may just be something we have to deal with without a proper ECU tune and not necessarily a cause for concern. I'll cruise around on stock for a bit this week and see how things go.

I did drive to work this morning on stock mode and didn't see any CEL and dinan was reporting max boost about 13 psi but mostly below 10. I'm beginning to think the dinan app is pretty close to reality. (as you would expect pulling straight from the MAP) I have seen few places where a dirty air filter can cause the underboost code and I cleaned my filter yesterday and it was pretty filthy so maybe that had something to do with it. Nevertheless I will keep you posted.

only did some in-town errand runs..... ran race mode the whole time (i always run 93 octane)
to be honest.... the claimed 20hp increase is ~10% of stock....
sorta hard to tell via the old butt-dyno....
will make some 0-60 & 0-100 runs with & without asap
maybe bit more responsive in the bottom end (keeping spooled up better?)
but may just be placebo effect for all i know.....
.....one thing for sure... it did no harm... ; )
then again, i am still running with an 'under-boost' P0299 CEL that may or may not be due to a faulty wastegate.......

It definitely works.....went out this morning and found my A4 up in a tree 😋😋
Sadly, have not driven the A4 but only a few times with the Dinan module installed, but can feel improved lower RPM response. With a few sunny days coming, will have to find some open roads (certainly away from trees) and see what it will do.
Edit: Just back from a short trip on Interstate 20 to Wally World in next town about 10 miles away. Could definitely feel the little extra power up to redline in 3rd gear. Wife was with me. Her comments....that was kinda fun!

i am wondering if the ecu needs time to adapt..... car felt moar peppy when i gave it quick jabs on the throttle from the lower rev range.... felt like it was pulling a little harder up through the revs, too.....

Maybe you're doing something wrong. You don't have to "pair" to it, just open the dinan app and it should show up in the lists if it works with your OS.

You may want to check that you get the correct kit. I ordered off of their application for a 2016 allroad and it did not work and had to order a different kit for a 2013 allraod. The allroad was broken down to 2013-2015 and 2016-2017. Many people have ordered the wrong kit following their application guide.

my BIL used to work with them back in the 80's
- a buddy of mine has a BMW with a bunch of Dinan aftermarket parts. I cant imagine that this product doesn't do what it says..
it works on a V simple principal.. it just tells the ecu its seeing less boost that it is....
no other parameters are effected or adjusted....
some think this is just fine..... others think not, as many other parameters are not monitored, adjusted & balanced as would be in a "proper" tune.
my feeling is that the ultimate boost in intake pressure is at a level that a car in good running order thats been well maintained should be able to hold up just fine to this minor modification.
to me, it is all about realistic expectation.....
this thing is good for maybe 10% increase at best.....
if you can get one for < $200, then i fail to see any reason not to if your looking for a small gain in performance....
for me, its a good little toy till i get my apr stage two.... at which time i will just flip it, (pay it forward, as they say) at a reasonable used price to some one here, hopefully, who will enjoy it as much i do....
until then, it works just fine.... [up]

Ok so heres what i got so far..
The scanner is super easy to use, it literally is just plug it in and connect to its Wifi. The Stock app is GARBAGE.. you need to purchase an app..
The ODB Fusion App is pretty cool. The performance calculations seem pretty accurate (did a bunch of 0-60 runs). On the other hand, the boost gauge has to be wrong.. I've peaked boost over 30Psi - I'm pretty sure thats bogus so i'm not hanging any hats there. The best part of the app imo is the logs. You can start a log and run through the gears. You'll get a real time graph showing you HP/TQ/boost and in the background a CSV file is capturing second by second data. Using that i was able to see peak HP/TQ numbers (among other useless information) and compare those numbers pre-post Dinan piggyback install. Heres the data in a nutshell:
Pre Dinan -High water marks:
226.71 HP - - 259.63 TQ - - 0-60 6.01
Post Dinan -High water marks:
252.33 HP - - 287.35 TQ - - 0-60 5.65
Worth noting, i have no other performance mods...not even an intake.
The Butt Dyno feels like theres something there but without the logging tool i'd be on the fence with how much performance was actually gained from the Piggyback. Numbers dont lie though.. right??
So gains were 25.6HP/27.7Tq/0.36s 0-60
Thoughts??
PS- the Dinan App's boost gauge was WAYYYY more realistic.. Showing boost in the 8-14lb range with a spike at 19psi.

Same App, 2 days after installing the Dinan and did a highway merge up to about 80MPH and the below was the capture.. as you can see.. RIDICULOUS numbers.. i mean straight up crazy..
https://mvlpzg.bl3301.livefilestore.com/y4mmAtBDUCpNyYL2HCkx4wMKKhbWp9cPx-qmhS45eQAH-Rc9lDyX8hOcqrN4aKBB3kJtWq2Ukg2XqnPMkbZfjZVPF8Sn5n6 ztRr-1U84NiUQH1GidAXGse8ek3uxqCHLcepfsgxpAJTCWQtuuC7Iob DFBBReoT0uAstWR8FZqsk3gMa0ptwV0f94oHGk6BBv7mLkW9-eGrQcSo69LsO7g5WWQ?width=1221&height=366&cropmode=none
So my stock runs turned out stock numbers (as expected) and then my Dinan runs have turned out some pretty insane numbers - numbers that are far beyond my capacity to believe to be true..
The car does feel a whole lot different, to the tune of 90Ftlb's...Nah..cant see that being the case..
I guess where i'm going with this is...WTF?!?!?!

I guess where i'm going with this is...WTF?!?!?!Well we have already established the boost levels are nowhere near realistic as read by the ecu, which may explain why some of users are getting underboost codes from time to time. (I do hope it's not really a leak or worse)
We need someone to dyno....

Well a piggyback works by tricking the ecu and one of the values is boost, so...

Well a piggyback works by tricking the ecu and one of the values is boost, so... How are you doing the hp calculations? If boost is in the calculation then your calculations mean nothing is what I meant.

Bc a piggyback fucks w the boost numbers in the ecu
....which would explain why the only reasonable #s i get are when using the dinan app....
....with an assumption that the dinan app applies a correction to the data it is accessing from the ecu.... ?

Just putting this out there. I have a D440-0046 for sale for $150 shipped in the USA. Only used about a month and a half, comes with the original box and some cable ties.

I got that with the neuspeed one. I think I got the code once with the Dinan. My turbo got replaced under my cpo.
